Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great weekend everyone!! I've been waiting for the official results to post. I did an Oly yesterday and finished in 2:33:41, that's a PR by 16+ minutes*. My highest priority for the day was to try to run 9 minute miles on the 10k, I averaged 8:43s. I wish my bike split was faster but I did take 2:30 off my best bike split for this course. * The swim ended up being a bit short by about 3.5 minutes. Either way, that's still the equivalent of a 12 or 13 minute PR. |

I had my first race(s) and they all went pretty good. Saturday kicked off a duathlon (5k run 20mile bike 5k'ish run), I wasn't sure how to race it since I've never done a du before so I just went a normal pace on the first 5k and then just focused on the bike (This is the first day that I have actually ridden on the new tri bike outside so wasn't sure how I would handle being in aero) Then I just kinda pushed it on the second 5K (Which I found out was a little short). I have to say I felt like I was flying on the Tri bike compared to my roadie. I was just focusing on keeping my cadence around 90. I definitely could have pushed harder on the bike but it was all a learning this weekend so I didn't mind. (I was just shy of avg 20mph on the bike so I'm happy with that, considering that my trainer rides I look at the computer and I'm dying at 17mph.) I came in 54th overall and 13th in my age group so I was pretty happy with that. Today was a half marathon. I figured since I'm doing the Fink plan that Sunday is my long run normally anyways so I figured I would treat it like a training run. I did the Syracuse HM last October (Which was my first standalone HM) and just made it under 2 hours. Todays run I made it in at 1:48 (8:17 min/mile pace) so I was really happy with that since that is the best pace I've had at doing that type of distance. So all in all it was a great weekend. I know some things I need to work on for the next race and I feel good about where I'm at for LP. The one thing I didn't expect to learn is that just for the 20 miles of riding (Mostly in aero) that my neck and shoulder blades are pretty sore from keeping my head up. I guess I need to position the iPad up higher so I'm not looking so much down when I'm on the trainer. Hopefully I can get enough rides in where I can work on those muscles.
Nice races there JMoney!!! What you failed to mention is the bone chillingly cold temps we experienced during the duathlon Saturday morning! Now, granted, I am an absolute pansy with the cold, but even by my standards, 29 degrees is just plain punishment! On the bike, first my fingers went numb (mittens be damned) followed shortly by my toes. 2 pairs of wool socks plus neoprene toe covers weren't enough! I was very, very concerned about figuring out how in the world I'd get my running shoes back on. My fingers were semi frozen in a C shape around the aerobars making pulling on running shoes over frozen toes quite the trick. Anyways, my race went about as well as I could have hoped. Being my first duathlon, I kinda dogged the first 5k not knowing what to expect, had a solid bike, then finally emptied the tank for the last 5k. 19th overall, but "only" 7th in my AG. Apparently Jason and I have ALOT of fast guys in our group. On Sunday, I did Finks "optional" 2hr easy bike ride. All in all it was a very nice weekend. JMoney- To answer your question about gearing for LP, I am going with a compact crankset (50/34) paired with a 12-28 cassette. This has worked real well for me on my hill training, in past races, and didnt get anywhere near running out of gears in Rochester. It might be worth your consideration. Anybody racing this weekend?? not racing this weekend, but next weekend is my first multi sport of the year... then Triple T Ohio weekend after that. I would tell you what Duathlon I am doing but you both are in my AG and I don't need any more comp than what is already there |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Didn't race this past weekend but looks like I'll actually be able to do the half marathon I had planned this upcoming weekend! It seems like my foot was just some tendonitis, and with some icing, ibuprofen and compression is feeling much better. Wore some old stability shoes with the laces tied loose and compression socks and got my long run in no problem yesterday. Although at this point I'm more excited about my first tri of the season that's in 3 weeks... And don't scare me like that dtoce, 12 weeks seems wayyy too soon! |

so I have not tried this yet, but am considering it. I got this ice wrap thingy at an expo called Arctic Ease cryotherapy wrap. It's really for wrapping knees, ect... I was thinking about wrapping a drink bottle in the special needs bag to keep it cold. NOt sure how long it will last, but I may experiment with it during training and I will keep ya posted. I've seen them sold at Dick's sporting goods as well. It seems to be very thin. I've never tried it on a bottle, just on my knee and it was cold enough. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() speaking of ice and cooling-does anyone have any tricks/insights as to cooling stuff for special needs? those quick packs will be useless after 1/2 day in the sun... I plan on freezing a CamelBak bottle. I usually fill it up 3/4 of the way and freeze it solid, then the morning of the race, I'll put my Perpetuem on top of the ice. Obviously, I'll practice this method before LP. Typically, my CamelBak bottle stays cold with ice cubes for about 3 hours. Just a thought... |

I haven't tried them but it looks like something I may want to try. I like the ouside flask holder. I figured I would try to use a flask for LP, but I haven't figured out how I would carry it yet. This looks pretty cool. |

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() I may have missed this earlier in the thread (almost 100 to go through!) but has anyone thought about gearing for their bike set up? I normally ride with a 53/39 rings and 12-23 cassett on either a HED disc or Jet 9. I've been thinking about shifting to a 12-25 to give a little back up since my training outside of Memphis is going to lack any significant climbing time. Also, disc or jet 9? I'm leaning toward jet 9's both front and rear unless it is forecasted to be windy and I'll shift to jet 6 front. |

![]() JMoney - 2012-04-29 6:52 PM After being able to reflect on the bike portion of my duathlon on Saturday, I'm nervous that I may need to change up my cassette. On my new tri bike I believe I have a 53/39 on the front and a 11/28 on the back. I have to go back to last years discussion in the LP tread about this topic but I have no clue what I get with the current setup compared to something that gets me some more lower gears for the hills. In the tiny inclines that I did on Saturday I ran out of gears (I was trying to get to a gear where my quads were not burning at any point) Is that even possible to go up a hill without the quads burning. I've always been a masher so it doesn't really bother me if I was just riding but knowing that I'm going to have to run a marathon afterwards makes me want to try to conserve as much as possible. I know there is going to compact or the tripple up front but I'm not sure what my options are for the back. If the 11/28 on the back isn't working for tiny inclines than I highly suggest you talk to your tri shop about a compact crank. Perhaps they can cut you a deal. |

I would second this suggestion. other options include: -training harder by spinning the biggest gear you can (one smaller than you would normally on any hill) and add hills to your training schedule as a weekly ride (like you didn't expect that answer...) -changing to an 11/32 cassette (which would not be my suggestion) which will give you more gears for uphills and let you keep the 11 for the downs -------------------------------------------- For me, it seems that 11/28 will be plenty and that is what I am going with--now I just have to keep pounding the hills myself in training (*I do have a compact crank, however) Dale Edited by dtoce 2012-05-02 8:07 AM |

I am going to a 12/32 on the back. Why? some may ask... Well I plan on not pedaling going down descents. Saving my legs. There is no benefit for me to go from 25-27 mph and using that energy and if I am going above 30 I probably have already spun out of my 11 so, again, there's no need for it. Also, I don't see myself hammering at any section of the course so my 11 is going to be useless. I am setting my ego aside on this one. If I wanted to spend more money I would have bought a triple crank |

If I wanted to spend more money I would have bought a triple crank And just as another data point, I'm going with my 34/50 crankset and 12-27 cassette. I looked into changing out my cassette after seeing Boo mention a 32 - but the only option that would have given me a bigger gear back there with my current derailleur looks like an 11-28. Didn't really seem worth it for a single tooth. And although I'm just starting to figure my way around all this stuff, I get the idea that the 34/27 combo is on the easier side anyhow. Then again, I'm on a road bike, so that might explain some of it. |

Couldn't determine grade when checked out strava / garmin routes. The real course video that I have for my computrainer has the grade between 3% and 8.9% for the climb out of transition and prior to the Keene decent. After the decent it is fairly flat with some 1%-3% grades, the turn towards Wilminton at Jay is around 4.5% then back to flat with small inclines of 1%-3% until mile 44.5 where there is a series of stair step climbs that range from 2%-7% through mile 54.5. So according to the Computrainer the steepest are out of transition. Never having ridden the actual course except on the trainer, I agree the placement is what makes them difficult and really pulls your average speed down. I'll be interested to see how the actual course compares to riding it on the computrainer, but that won't happen until race day. Edited by mikfinne 2012-05-02 1:22 PM |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think it is just helpful to note that a steep hill or long slow hill is coming. You have to practice hills to improve your shifting and spinning on them. Here is the 'map my ride' link http://www.mapmyride.com/s/routes/view/bike-ride-map/new-york/lake-placid/403905 You can see that there are 2 smaller hills before the big DOWNHILL. Then there is a long slower uphill lasting about 10 miles from mile 44-54 which includes 'da bears'.
