I have never been either so ashamed or so proud of myself as tonight--I skipped the post-race party/celebration because I *knew* I would be up all night carousing with piglets. I even had a, ermmm, "post race treat" lined up. However, the recovery is so good I absolutely don't want to muck it up. Also, very little sleep for two nights sandwiching an IM effort. Of course, it's 2am. Why am I not in bed? Wanna come over and celebrate? You just saw "sandwiching" and "bed" and got excited. Yes. Plus, you deserve some post race treats. Heh. Oh I will have them. Just not tonight :D Had a long chat with Amanda Balding and Luke McKenzie today and they said, pretty much in unison, EXACTLY what you wrote on my FB--it's a long training day for NZ then! Did you PM my sis? She likes you. No, I just commented on the post she made. She likes me, eh?!?!?! Anyway, I really do feel like this was just a training session for NZ. If you can pull the long training sessions that you have on the bike you can clearly recover well and I think that is going to set you up nicely. By the way, I had the craziest spiritual moment, probably right during "my" segment of your bike ride. It was unreal and I can't even describe it. |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty Beyond Ridiculous Manatees PART 6--CLOSED Oh yeah, my bike is in the shop and the guy told me that it's not so bad and that he'll essentially charge me for a tune up with a few extra part charges. The components that are broken aren't a big deal (they were more or less the parts that are made to break rather than the important parts IE: the part that holds the rear derailer to the frame) So, pretty awesome news! I was worried I might have to be faced with the get it fixed or buy a new bike decision. Hellz yes for my little trusty dime store diamond! |

Do take good care of the knee ... a little caution now better than regret later. I spent yesterday eating flies, and today wiping infected slime and picking neck crust out of my hair. Attached is a photo of the NOT BAD chafe (chafe upon chafe, actually) on my left jawline. The massage therapist said I should get the one on the BACK of my neck looked at because it's a lot worse and has a large hard lump that is spewing crap. Tempted to shave the bottom half of my hair and keep the top long (but tied up for now), skater-chick style. If it's not any better tomorrow I'll see some kind of medical person. The chemist gave me some wash and creams for it which have been quite nice. Dude! What did you *really* do? |

Also, Spring HIM people -- how is it going? Have you given much thought to on course nutrition? Are you packing your own or living off the course? Jo, how are you feeling about things? Your swim and run training looks great. That will definitely pay off! TJ, you are very much on track as well, for 100+ days out. |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty Beyond Ridiculous Manatees PART 6--CLOSED When your Mentor-nesses are done with your respective post-race highs, I have a run training question and a swim training question. Run - the plan I am using is the Fink IM plan. I am wondering about the absence of "short" days. Each week seems to be full of long runs. I did last weeks long run of 1 hour yesterday, Sunday. Today I have a 1 hour run, tomorrow is a 15 min run after a quick change, then Thursday and Sunday are 75 minutes. I don't mind putting in the time/miles if it's right, but I know most plans have long and short days. Thoughts? Swim - today at masters I was to do 6 X 250 on the 6:30. I had no problem making the interval but noticed my time got slower each set. Obviously this is because I started to tire but I read something/somewhere about indications of doing repeats in which the time slows. I know there is a question in there somewhere. I guess i'm just wondering if that is n ormal fatigue, need to work on endurance stuff. It would probably be beneficial to know what my stroke count did but it was all I could do to count laps/sets, let alone strokes! My time went from 5:45.9 on the first 250 to 6:12.6 on the last, with one fluke one at 6:23.9 when I decided to see if bi-lateral breathing helped.
Thoughts? BTW, I'm not unhappy with the times. I think I'm improving. |

I am feeling good about the training with some questions (see previous post). I'm contemplating the nutrition issue. I'm going to buy and try the items that will be on the course. It would be convenient to rely on the course. Interestingly, I can eat waffles on the bike, gels give me heartburn and chews and gummy type things make me feel like I can't breathe while I'm chewing. How's your training moving along? |

In that timeframe I was typically running 60-75 minutes for mu long run, short run as part of a brick, 45-50 minutes with speed work mid week. In other words, it sounds kind of like what you are doing. I'll let someone who knows about swimming answer the rest. |

Thoughts? BTW, I'm not unhappy with the times. I think I'm improving. Hmmmmmm. Well, let me address the run question. I don't really feel comfortable addressing the swim, but you say that you are improving so, focus on that for now until maybe you get a solid answer to your actual question. I think you just have to trust your plan. What was it that made you choose the Fink plan to begin with? As a runner, I have "short" runs to maintain frequency (and volume to some degree) and increase recovery. I know by now that my body often doesn't need a complete off day to "rest" and that a short run helps aid my recovery and keeps my volume up. Now, as a triathlete your focus is a little different and you are getting some of that "recovery" from the other sports and you are also doing the time management balancing act. I do think that there is always a time and a place to make adjustments to "out of the box" training plans. If you want to add some more short runs (and have the time for it) I think that is fine but be sure you are doing it with purpose not randomly. I think the Fink plan is aiming to get the most "bang for your buck" and having you do those runs to work on your endurance, which for an IM/HIM, is your main focus. |

Regarding nutrition -- For me, I carry what I want on the bike so that I can control timing, I want nothing to do with carrying stuff on the run so I live off the course if possible. It's just good to kind of figure things out ahead of time and see what works for you. Race day is not a good time for experimentation. |

Yeah, just make sure that Gu and Roctane agree with you and maybe try the Bonk Breaker flavors. I probably could not run and eat the bars but that's why they offer different things. I'd also want to know if it is FLAT cola or not. At B2B they did flat cola and that worked for me. At Vineman it was fizzy and that worked less well. |

Yeah I am pleased with my swim, it's been month since I did an OWS last one was HIM Cairns and that was warm water with a 2000 of my closest friends including Macca! You know what it is, the thought of IM is so DAUNTING, OVERWHELMING. If it wasn't called Ironman it wouldn't feel so bad. How about a really long triathlon. The bike - it is what it is. I'm really concentrating this week on building speed during the two/three weekly rides and then just hammering through 2.30 on the weekend - probably saturday on my birthday! Happy bloomin' birthday haha! I just want to get through a swim and a ride in the cut off time - that gives me plenty of time for the marathon and I think I got that. Thanks for your motivation, it really does help. x |
