I just realized I totally shunned my responsbilities.  If you want to ignore all of my posts for the next week I would totally understand!

Who is racing this weekend? lay down your goals AND they better be aggresive!

I have a fairly simple goal this weekend, I need to finish out my weekly weight training. I am hoping to get a good run in, may or may not be too easy based on the accumulating inches of snow. If not I will be on the treadmill and I am shooting for 20 minutes straight at a decent pace. Dont shun me but I am just back in to it. The pool will be closed by the time I get out so no swimming for me this weekend.

No race, but I am starting a Tri class which begins this Saturday at my gym. My gym has an indoor triathlon in late February and this class is to introduce and train anyone interested in participating. I did the same indoor tri last year and was how I got hooked on this stuff. I am hoping to get some pointers on swim training as well as just time in the pool, on the bike and the treadmill. I am not sure what to expect to be honest, but it is free to members so nothing to lose but some sleep early Saturday morning.

Got the results of my bilateral femur x-ray yesterday and as my PT always theorized, my right leg is 1.2cm shorter than my left.....explains a lot of the issues I have had the last couple of years on that right side--PF and now the stress fracture.  Also explains some of the IT band issues on my left side when biking.  It is longer so doing more work every pedal stroke.

Sometimes we think rest will heal everything and then the annoying injury returns when we start up again.  In this instance all the muscle balancing and resting doesn't do a lot to solve the long term problem.....key is attacking the short leg.  I asked if I could have two new ones, preferably 6-10" longer than the current set, but my doctor turned me down. Tongue out.Damn doctors.

Going to hit the pool and work on that "over the barrel" arm form and hip rotation,  then Sunday is going to see the prettiest, best running form ever performed for 2.6 miles!!!!!!  I am so excited!!!!

Good new that you have a place to move forward from Suzy.  See if you can get some lifts built into both of those orthodics, just make one slightly higher than the other.

CyborgQueen - 2010-01-08 1:14 PM Hey folks!

I would like to get an overall answer.  I never had a coach in my life or even looked for one (why do I need a coach for being a couch potato? Laughing).

I was recommended a swim session that is 4 weeks with coaching, and emailing back and forth for swim workouts and times, etc. It's $75 for the 4 weeks.

Lmk what you think.  I don't want to do it and find that it's considered expensive, and I could have looked elsewhere. As far as I know, I've read that many many people get swim coach over anything else, and it's considered valuable...but I'm just concerned about the price, is it fair?

The gym I go to has Swim 101 classes (and even Triathlon class!! fun!), and since it's included in my monthly price (very cheap by the way), I don't need to pay extra...but it may be different from a coach that DOES triathlons/OWS.

75 bucks is super cheap, I pay almost that per lesson.

But I would still talk to the coach first and see how they work.  I think there are many swim coaches out there that don't know how to coach slow adults.

And Andy just like running, gotta do Tempo/Speed/LSD's all year .

LOL - Jorge's plan has had me doing 5min, 20min and 60min FTP work as well...

Mett - 2010-01-07 4:03 PM I would love to find a swim coach, I just cant afford a whole lot at the moment. I will make a post in the Ohio forums and see what I can find.

You might be able to just get a few lessons from the local swimming pool etc. the expense is significantly less and it might make a world of diference to your stuyle. I know it helped me a coupl of years ago. I did 2 lessons per week for 6 weeks, I think< and it cost me only about 100.00

No hits yet on the ohio forums. Its not that I can t swim, I am a great swimmer, I just need to learn how to swim endurance. I burn myself out too quit and just need someone to watch my form and correct it so I can swim a longer distance/

No race this weekend..I am going to run 2.6 on Sat. to help Tracy honor the 26.2 she was planning to run.  Then I have 7 miles on Sunday.

If you are already a great swimmer, you probably just need to swim more.  Your form may only fall apart as you start getting tired, so having a coach right away may not be neccessary.

Just my 2 cents from someone who is NOT even a good swimmer, let alone great.    Endurance will come with time, it doesn't happen overnight.  Maybe just start out with a 200 yd warm up and then do 10 x 50's and rest for 30 seconds after each lap initially.  Then shorten the rest periods or increase the number of intervals at your next workout.

I'm sure Robert or Linda can chime in on this.

Have you tried counting your strokes and or timing your laps?  Maybe decreasing your stroke count or purposely taking longer to swim a lap could help?  Also form drills are great at building endurance.

No racing here.  Skiing tomorrow.  Chasing my older boys down the hill and helping the 3 year learn to ski.  If we get home early enough tomorrow evening, a spin on the trainer is in order.  Sunday is an all day youth wrestling tournament and hopefully a treadmill run in the evening.

I had a good training week though to start the year.  3 solid runs, 2 solid swims and my first spin on a training.  I like how increasing the volume just a bit gives me a big jump in excitement to do more!

Have a great weekend everyone.

I am racing my trainer and two other clients of his on Sat.  He is training me and several other triathletes.  He is organizing a simulated triathlon on Sat afternoon: 20 min in the pool (as many laps as you can in that time); 45 on the bike and 30 on the treadmill (as far as you can go in those 30 min).  Everyoine goes at his/her own pace, but I SO want to smoke him.  He is at least 15 years younger than I am and he beat me by 20 minutes in the last Oly that he and I both did  (Nation's in Sept.).

So, to keep everyone updated, no AZ marathon for me this year for two reasons.  First, I got enough information about DVT to suggest that it would be unwise to try to fly within several hours of completing the race.  Just not worth the risk.  Second, the meeting got moved up, so I actually have to fly to the meeting on Saturday night.  So until I learn to manipulate the time-space continuum, I cannot be in two places at once.  (And there is no way I could get my identical twin to run the marathon or go to the meeting.

So, instead, next week I am moving directly into the base phase of the training for the Florida HIM in May.
