Trained on the IMLP course this past weekend.  Pretty much rained the entire time.  Got a good long swim in on Friday, did two loops of the bike (in the pouring rain) followed by a 6 mile T run on Saturday, then a short bike - long run - short swim on Sunday.

Bike course was much easier than I thought it would be (definately a lot easier than Rev 3 Quassy) and run course was harder than I though it would be.  Mostly just good for the head to feel like I can have a little confidence going out there.

Happy Peak training week to everyone (well most everyone depending on your plan!) Watched some of the finish line live from CdA last night. Very cool stuff!

In February Bobby got us talking about meeting up on Friday morning for a swim and picture since most people are getting in on Thursday... Was wondering if that still works for everyone?

Two more weeks of hard training and then taper! Was able to get all of my key workouts in this week so happy with that.

Agreed on the Placid course - bike course is hard but manageable, run course is tougher than I thought it would be.

I have a mantra when i get nervous on screaming down hills "I am in control!"

Haha! I first read this that you will be screaming "I am in control!" going down hills and was like well we'll all know who that is on the bike now... but I get what you mean. Good idea for the mantra!

Knocked out a 4:26 time at the tupper lake tinman this weekend. Placed 18th OA and 2nd 25-29 AG. Swim was 29.03, bike was 2:22 (lots and lots of rollers and hills), and run was 1:32( a couple nice hills). Contrary to my overall time this race did not go well for me. I overcame some mechanical issues and lots of nutrition problems (I was throwing up most of the run). So I had a decent time but a brutal race day. It feels good that I was able to push through but it was not an optimal race. Good practice for most of the things that could go wrong for me in placid. 5 more days until my next race and less than a month until placid!

I'm glad Lake Placid is getting all the rain out of it's system now.   Also glad to hear, once again, that the LP course is easier than Rev3 course.  I rode up in Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain this weekend and another cyclist told us what we were riding up at Harriman was much more challenging than Lake Placid.  But he warned us of the 'cumulative effect'.  Meaning: what feels easy the 1st loop will not feel as easy the second loop.

Riding in the Rain, way to HTFU

I'm game for early Friday morning.  And that works cause I will be swimming my last loop of Mirror Lake that morning.

The best part was the hail when going up Whiteface on the first loop.  Hail in June, fantastic!

Maybe if we pick an exact spot on the beach or by the beach would work best.

Right now there's a tent for the kayakers and canoers where your X is.  May be a good idea to meet at the tent.

I'm good for any time on Friday but won't swim much. My plan calls for a swim on Thursday so I will be hitting the lake sometime in the late afternoon. After falling and missing so much training I am going to stick to the plan as much as possible, especially 3 days out

26 day, 14 hours!!!!!

Congratulations Piratenick, that is really moving. Some of the pro's in my last half were finishing around the time you did. I guess all you need to do now is sit back and let the sponsors come to you.

Hey guys. I'm up to meet on Friday morning for a swim! Don't really have a time in mind at the moment. I'll probably force myself to be up early though so that I can get to sleep on Fri/Sat night with the 3hr time change I'm going to go through with the travel. I get into Montreal on Thurs morning and then will be driving down with my Mom and staying in Saranac Lake.

Peak week: grrrrroooooaaaaaaaaannnnnn. Haha. I have long days Tues-Fri. If only the Tour started before Sat...then I could transfer some excitement! Haha. Just have to bury my head and get 'er done. GET 'ER DONE everybody!

Race yesterday was kinda blah. Tired legs basically lead to a less than stellar tri. I really set it there to get a good brick style workout in rather than a race-race but it was a bit disheartening to not be able to really push it. I guess that is what happens though. Also think I strained an intercostal a bit--feels a bit like rib 9-10ish. Was bugging me on the run yesterday and I had to walk it out a bit and then a bit again today on my run, still hurts me a bit if I fully inhale. It was okay after about 3-4km today but a bit miserable for the first part. Hope that goes away!

So from the sounds of most folks training lots of people have two week tapers. Anyone going longer for the 3 weeks? I've got a progressive 3 weeks myself. Taper starts Monday for two weeks then a specific race-week taper week I guess right before placid. I can't believe we're this close. I really want to enjoy this race no matter what happens out there.

i have a peak week this week , then a slow taper, really wont feel light until the week before the race.

i too want to enjoy the race no matter what, i always think to myself "my attitude is the only thing i can change" when the going gets tough. this will be my first IM and im wondering how ill feel in the end.

Great ? about the taper Nick,  what are most folks doing.  I have followed Fitzgerald's Level 6 plan for most of my training but I tweaked it some.  I write out my plan each week to adjust my schedule and to add a bit more running in.  I tried to run (even if it was a short lunch time run) 5-6 days a week.  I had another plan that a friend gave me from his old IM that I guided off of too.  That plan came from a coach.  Surprisingly the plans were similar alot of the time.  Last night I sat down trying to fiqure out my final stretch in this journey.  This week according to Fitzgerald I will do a 6 hr ride followed by a run (This will be a race rehearsal for me) and it starts tapering after  that.  The other plan does its rehearsal next weekend and has alot shorter taper (2 weeks, instead of three).  What are most of yall doing.

The Be-Ironfit Intermediate plan has a 15 hour week this week, followed by 12:45, 10, then 7:45 for Race week.  Which I interpret as pretty much a 2-week taper, cause 12:45 is a full week.  And I like this.

JorgeM had a great post in last year's LP thread about how the original "3-week Taper" was developed by the Russians back in the 1970's for marathoners.  And the reason the "3-week Taper" became a standard was because all the Olympians by  the end point of their training programs were throroughly over-trained.  To properly overcome the symptoms  of over-training takes 3-weeks on average.  This is where the "3-week Taper model" was born of.

All the recent articles I've read, citing recent studies, show that for marathons a 2-week taper with a sharp decrease the final week is actually optimal for allowing an athlete to "pop" or "peak" on race day.  Something like 3 weeks out regular volume to 20% maximum decrease, then 2 weeks out no more than 40% decrease, then final week a sharp 60% decrease.

There are lots of studies like this one, but I think the bottom-line is you should follow your plan you've been on this whole time; Better off over-tapered than under-tapered.

Also, everyone's body is different.  I know I do better with a shorter taper.  Pin-pointing the line where you can keep and maintain fitness while allowing your body to recover for optimal fitness seems to be the holy grail.
