Hello all! My past week in training was a real tough one; felt like crap for all of my runs. We had to modify our training schedule because we had a wedding to attend to in Florida and we didn't get a rest day until this past Friday. It made me realize I really need that rest day on Monday (following the Fink plan).

The weather where I'm at has been very unlucky for long rides--finally, yesterday seemed like we would be able to take the 4 hour ride outside! Left the house, 70 degrees, nothing on the radar. 2 hours in and BOOM, major thunderstorms (this was NOT predicted by the weather channel...they said only 10% chance of rain until 4 pm!). We tried to push through as much as we could; got drenched; then the wind started gusting really bad and debris was flying; I got hit smack in the face by a pine cone. So, in the middle of no where farm country Illinois, we found a barn that was open to take shelter. Got into the barn and saw that the walls were plastered with pictures of naked women...no joke! Got us a little worried...but luckily no one was home (we don't think...they had the barn door open though...) After about 30 minutes, things finally cleared up and we were able to finish our ride. Didn't get the brick in though...the thunderstorm really took it out of us!

Now for my question:

We have our first Olympic tri this weekend (it was the absolute earliest I could find around us, and it's still 5 hours away!). My question for you folks is how should we go about racing? LP will be our first IM. Do we race and try to maintain IM pace (Z2 efforts) or push the pace since it is Olympic distance? Same question for the half IM we have planned on June 3rd.

Thanks!

I can tell you what *I* would do.  I would RACE the Olympic.  Recovery from an Olympic for me is usually around 3 to 4 days.  For my half on June 3rd I plan to hammer the Swim, go Zone 3 on the bike, and keep it at Zone 2 for the Run and allow a full week for Recovery -- which gives me 4 full weeks of PEAK IRONMAN TRAINING till a 2-week taper.

I mean, if you're gonna drive 5 hours to a Race - you may as well RACE it!!  Otherwise you can just save the money stay home, and do a tempo SBR workout... Right?

First, if there was a pen nearby, I would have autographed one of the naked lady pictures... but that's just my sense of humor.

Then...  I give Dream a x2 on what he said...

DC -

What race are you doing June 3rd?

I'm trying to find a suitable race in that time frame as well and I know you live in NY also.

Thanks!

I BROKE THE COURSE RECORD!!!

...but still came in 4th.

Had a sprint duathlon yesterday and I beat the course record by 14 seconds but I managed to have 3 other people break it...just faster lol.

I'm pleased after being sick for over a week and only having one day of training in between.  Maybe I just felt fresh...

ah its been awhile since I posted.
I took last week as recovery week and only did half of everything that I was supposed to!  My long ride was 2hrs and I was surprised to be hammering a 20mph on the road.  Im pretty happy with the improvement!

This past weekend, the goodlife marathon was in town.  My scheduled long run(2hrs) just worked well with the half marathon distance so I did the half.  I biked to the starting line, about 20k, and cheered my friends thats doing the marathon 1hr earlier.  Anyhow I had a blast!!!! I dressed up as Thor and really got the crowd going!  The weather was perfect!  I can now really see how people blow up during the race.  With my Ironman pace of avg of 10:30ish min/mile, people were passing me left and right in the first 3-5k.  It was hard to hold back!  But I knew if I make a move, my watch would beep and annoy the heck out of me.  So I stuck to my plan and stay in zone 2.  At the same time people were yelling at me " GOOOO BATMAN!!!" at first I thought, somebody was dressed as batman but really they were cheering for me.  So I just raised my hammer (it makes a thunder sounds) and kept on running. At 10k, I was slowly passing the people that passed me earlier and I still maintained my ironman pace.  I walked and drank a lot of liquid in the aid station and peed a lot as well.  At mile 10, I wanted to tested out if I still have enough in the tank to "hammer" the last 3miles, so I did.  From my 10;30ish min/mile I just let it go and for the next 3miles I was averaging 8:40ish min/mile.  I was happy!  If I stayed in zone 2 I felt like I could have run longer to 30k. I passed at least 200 people and some yelled out "Thor is back and he's hammering it!"  I had an absolute blast!!!!  20mins before I finished my friend crossed the line, and she said the finishing chute was quiet, but when I was running down the chute, EVERYBODY was cheering!!!!  I had my hammer up!  It was the best feeling lol.  Mr announcer said "and here comes THOR!!! from the avengers!"

pic of me going down the chute

pic of me working the crowd

Way to go and make it fun.... I believe that is what this is all about. I will be doing Ironman as Chris Farley.

What would you recommend, Placid training weekend or HITS HIM race?  In your opinion, what would be better for the "big picture" in mind?

I have the same exact bike with the same exact set up... It carried me to my first IM at Lake Placid last summer.  Good luck with your training and good luck on race day.  I have the stock front wheel though, but usually have the wheel cover in the back.

Team4Cooper- I'm going to up at LP that weekend as well.

There's also the Harryman half at Harriman park (just a little north of the city), apparently the hills are somewhat close to what to expect at lake placid.  It's coming up in less than two weeks at this point though so not sure if its full or not.  Before that I was contemplating doing the Tupper Lake Tinman. Its really nice course, very close to LP but very poorly organized (put my mom in the male category last year and still haven't gotten her medal/trophy yet!) and it's only 3 weeks out from LP itself.  Oh, and if you're not against a little travel, Syracuse 70.3 is the 24th of June so you'd have 4 weeks between.  Nicely organized race, hilly bike (at least the first 10 miles are uphill), and apparently tons of spots for Vegas this year.

There are actually 6 of us on the team that are doing IMLP 2012. But in reference to Jamie we do train together at times, we are good friends.  He works in the ER every other weekend and has 2 kids so our timing is off a lot.
