Asalzwed - 2013-01-24 10:20 AM My first thought after She's so freaky fast! was Where was egomaniac guy and did she get a flyby pic of his face? This is a really big training week (miles) so I was a little curious about how last night's track workout was going to go, especially within the full week. (that of course is still TBD) Also, just to keep things interesting I forgot my sports bra AND socks AND all of my stuff was wet from my jog earlier in the day. SO ... there you have it, the start of my track workout in soggy clothes, a regular bra and dress socks (again.) Anyway, the workout was 4 x 1600 with 2.5 minutes rest in between. I decided to buck up and go with the faster group. We were supposed to go @ 6:27 pace per mile. We hit 6:22 on the first mile and it felt sooo smooth and easy. Of course we were doing 4 so I didn't want to get ahead of myself. Rep number 2 we got in 6:18. My coach gave us the go ahead to conservatively keep it up so the next two were 6:16 and 6:12! For the first time I dropped everyone in that last mile and felt great! This is coming into week 7 of marathon training so it seems to be falling in that 4-6 weeks where you start to see training adaptions taking place. Anyway, it's really exciting to see changes happening! |

Personally, I think everyone has their own ideal way to run. If you are conservative and sloooowly and cautiously increase volume and frequency your body will naturally adjust to run as efficiently as it can and is supposed to. Edited by Asalzwed 2013-01-24 6:32 PM |

Anyway, it's really exciting to see changes happening! Soggy clothes, regular bra and dress socks and you STILL rocked the group, awesome!!! It's very neat to see you seeing the fruits of your efforts. Keep up the good work, and maybe start keeping a bag with an extra sports bra and socks in your car, just in case! YANTI STORY TIME! I wear big sparkly dangly earrings on every single one of my long runs (I had Christmas earrings in my IMWA trans bag but forgot to put them on!) and marathons. Ah! You can see them here in my Calif In'tl Marathon finisher photo.
But why, you ask? Well, see ... I went to this Hallowe'en party (dressed as Princess Jasmine, but like evil and on crack, from Aladdin) and kinda sorta went home with this lumberjack who turned out to be a triathlete. ANYWAY ... OF COURSE the next day is our marathon long run training day ... I totally oversleep and do not remotely have time to go home to get my things. Triathlete boy (no, I have no idea what his name was ... I think it was Chris something or other; he was an undergrad at USC while I was teaching there. But he was a music student and they're weird so it doesn't count ) had a pair of running shorts and tech socks he loaned me, I had my runnies in my car so that was all good ... ARGH! Sports bra! We made one out of a pair of his tighty whities (see below for example). And he actually gave me a triathlon finisher shirt to run in--very cool. I was not a triathlete yet, but I thought that was very cool. So I show up at the long run--I really have to because, gulp, I'm the pacer/guardian/cheerleader for my group--in this getup, a crapton of (smeared) makeup on my face, and it turns out to be a good thing because my group burned a good 10 miles just making fun of me. I had forgotten to take my big dangly sparkly Princess Jasmine earrings off. I ran the whole damn run with them on! Ever since then, it was just a thing. I had to wear my hooker earrings on long runs/races. |

Basically it means you're like me but actually humble and don't have to announce to the world everything you do (nor expect that everyone else do it, too). Yeah, so speaking of announcing stuff and race stories ... I try to post this each Manatee season and haven't yet, so here's the race report and picture proof of my first triathlon--it was a reverse tri, so I managed to look like the Swamp Thing in a Cotton Bra at the finish. The other pic is of the same bike I used (sans horn) but at a later race.
I AM TRI-ATHENA!!! posted 04/10/05 Many thanks to my well-wishers (and by the way, I've enabled non-member comments again). I am tremendously pleased to report that I am indeed alive, moreover, having as much skin as I entered the triathlon with, and if any other racers don't, at least it wasn't on account of me.

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Muskrat37 - 2013-01-24 1:47 AM Kristen, I totally forgot to answer your question - Sorry about that. My .02 cents. The 2 shorter 1500 meter swims would be better for your overall conditioning and training, but only if you break them up into sets. I would do 1 long swim every other week, not every week. Break 1 1500 meter day into sets (6 x 250, or my favorite, a combination of 10 x 100 intervals and 2 x 250). If you can't hold a challenging interval for the 10 x 100, start with 5 x 100, then a 250, then 5 x 100, then a 250. I would probably add this 1500 meter broken set in weekly - giving you a 3rd day per week, then would do 1 long swim on a 4th day every other week. Does that makes sense? So your week might look like this: 1st week: Mon & Tues Masters... Thursday (1,500 meter broken set). 2nd week: Mon & Tues Masters....Thursday (1,500 meter broken set) - Saturday (2,500 meter long swim) Repeat and build each week until you reach your goal. Really curious to hear Yanti's advice on this one though...even if it totally disagrees with mine. I am great at analyzing a swim stroke, but still building my knowledge of the body and the best way to build for the individual events of a tri. Kirsten and Skrat -- overall, yes, I agree with this. Some finer points: I assume you'd be adding TWO ~1500m swims for a total of 4 workouts per week? Yes, I'd definitely add the two workouts, and do them in intervals ... HARD intervals. If you really need to, take the first 1-2 intervals as warm-up, but frankly, you're not gonna die if you don't. You might feel like it, but that's kind of the point. There are two general ways to do HARD intervals: either on a send-off time that's just barely within your grasp (and perhaps not at all for the last 2 repeats or so) OR to extend them 50-100m beyond what you feel like you can swim hard. In that sense, an A x 100m type set with some B x 250m could be ideal, provided that around 200 is where your hard swimming starts to trail off / break down in form / slow down / etc. I'm not sold on the value of a long continuous swim unless someone's swimming 5-6x/week and really focusing on swimming ... honestly, possibly not even then. There is no doubt that if you can suffer through a tough 1500m main set or workout, you can swim a solid continuous 1500m in race conditions. In terms of ROI for swim time, unless someone's actually swimming TO BE A SWIMMER with that kind of training time available and actually done, I think the long continuous swim is weak. The exception is that a 1000/1500 yd/m time trial can be very helpful for setting productive interval training paces and gauging progress. With a proper warmup and cool-down, seems like a good idea (if you're swimming a lot and want to focus that much on it) every couple of months. |
