![]() mikfinne - 2012-05-09 3:46 PM Well friends of the Ironman Lake Placid Thread today is a sad day for me. For the last month I have been having some pain in my ankle/shin. In the past I have had some tendonitis pain and have always figured out a way to run through it. Last Wednesday I went for a 14 mile run and at six miles started feeling a dull pain in my lower leg, by eight and a half miles I had to start walking because it hurt to bad to run. I ended up walking the last five and a half miles home. I kept biking and swimming but the pain was pretty consistent so at the advice of a couple folks here on BT I went to the Dr and got an MRI. The verdict is in and I have a stress fracture of my lower left leg. The Dr said the fractures extend from my ankle bone half way to my knee and "was lucky that the bone did not completely break". I'm in an air cast with crutches. Supposed to stay off the leg for one month, possible swimming in six weeks, cycling in eight weeks and no running for four months. To say the least I am extremely disappointed. I just keep telling myself that this is a lifestyle for me and it is not about one race. I am signed up to volunteer at Wisconsin in September and will be signing up for 2013. My plan has always been one IM a year until I can't do them anymore...except this year. I'll still watch (and comment) on this thread and will track many of you online during the race. Good luck in your training. There will be another day and another race for me. Stay Healthy Mike Mike, I am so sorry to hear Good for you volunterring at Wisconsin. I had something similar happen to me. In 2010 I was signed up for LP (my 1st Ironman at the time) and the last weekend in June I ended up with debiltating tendonitis in my left knee when I rode the bike for more than 20 mins. IT SUCKED. But I kept a positive attitude, I still took the family up to Lake Placid that weekend, cheered on my friends, and we had a great family vacation. It was a huge character builder for me to say the least. And in retrospect, many good things did come out of this. Please stay on this board and train and race vicariously through us. I will make it a point to keep you in my thoughts when I'm racing and hurting and want to mail it in, I will remember you on crutches and I'll just suck it up. Rest and get healthy. You have many, many more years of Ironman racing ahead of you. |

![]() TankBoy - 2012-05-09 6:49 PM dtoce - 2012-05-09 5:35 PM ...And don't forget to track the big showdown between TB and DC... (I'm not saying who my money is on) LMAO - Now that is some funny stuff right there! And I know who I would put my money on.... I'm 183 lbs right now.... so, yeah, I'd put my money on the 153 pound guy!! With pristine weather conditions, and if I dial in my nutrition correctly, and have no bike mechanicals, I'm probably looking at an 11:15 to an 11:20. I think if Rusty has his ideal day out there he's beating me by 20 to 25 mins - just being honest. But I mean shiiiit, if I catch sight of him on the run course ... well then... it's ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry to read that post Mike. Keep your spirits up. The cast will try to make you depressed but only let it motivate you for another race after you have recovered properly. As the knowledgable triathletes have said above - you are lucky you caught it when you did. Best recovery wishes to you. |

Many of my blood components are low, but my calcium is very good. Good for you volunterring. yes, please get a bone density scan, and check calcium levels I did and found out that I was just 'hard on my body', as my PCP says, and didn't have weak bones...but it is the appropriate test-my bone density was greater than 100%-likely due to running over the last decade troublemaker mode on: (and DC, didn't I read that your weight was 178#'s just a few days ago...let's not stretch the truth too much-ha) Edited by dtoce 2012-05-09 8:14 PM |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, HOw devestating! So sorry to hear this! You will come back stronger, I know it! A couple years ago I watched IM HI and they had a woman that was able to swim and bike and then she walked the marathon with an air boot. Wander if this is possible for you??? If not we know you will be back to kill it. Heal up fast. |

Stay Healthy Mike Mike... sorry to hear... I tore my distel bicep tendon clean off the bone last year, playing softball stupid me, and was out for the summer but was able to do a HIM 3.5 months later but my fitness wasn't what it could have been. I feel your pain. Pat Riley said,"Adversity introduces a man to himself." Well, this is your adversity. Stick to a plan and get healthy an you will rebound and quite possible be stronger. |

Good luck this weekend. godspeed with that century... I have yet to hit that number but I am sure it is close in the training plans. Maybe one Saturday we can meet up with a few others and do 2 loops of the Musselman course... halfway between us. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JMoney - Your 70 miler went well last week, this week will too. Great opportunity to practice the nutrition plan. Enjoy.
I missed my long ride last week so that I could go cub scout camping with my son. This week I'll be doing a long ride in the North Georgia Mountains. In only 70 miles I'll get just over 7,500 feet of climbing, almost 50% more climbing than LP. It'll be a good ride, looking forward to it. Next weekend is a HIM for me, that'll be a good test to see where I stand with training. I've been less than consistent with training, next week's HIM might be just the wake-up call that I need. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a short du on Sunday that I'm doing just for fun. Want to get a race in since I missed my last one because my foot. Heading to Harriman on Saturday (and anyone's welcome to join me if they want!) to see these hills that everyone is talking about. Now I'm petrified of this HIM next weekend! |

I did do 17 though, I was happy with that! No change of plans yet. Did you see the thread on FB about construction up there (possibly) that weekend? I'll send an email out with more information in the next couple days. |

Jeff, great job on knocking out 17 miles, that is a huge run. I did see the thread no FB about the construction up at LP. I was contemplating going up this Saturday to do the course but once I saw that I decided it wouldn't be beneficial. I have a 25 mile loop that has some real good climbs that will simulated LP. Plan on getting a few laps in to tax the leggs and lungs. Edited by dxc0162 2012-05-10 8:03 PM |

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm taking a long ride Saturday if anyone is interested. Might do Big George as part of it. 75 miles and 5 mile brick on top. Should be fun! Anyone else riding that day maybe I could hook up with so I don't bore my self with thought and fear what will happen in 9 weeks? Somewhere to start in Toga. |
