So, I think maybe my IM hiatus might be over for 2013....  watching some friends at IMAZ.   Always thought I'd do another, then sh&& hit the fan and wasn't sure I ever could, then didn't really want to, but now starting to feel the pull again.  Not sure why, but I am listening.

Seriously considering joining in the Monday morning feeding frenzy for IMAZ....  Not necessarily a race I'd put in the top 10, but easy to drive to, can make a long weekend out of it, it's good spectator race, and the loops on the bike/run help my OCD     And I think one loop swims favor me.

But it's likely going to sell out in less than a minute, leaving community fund.  ANd if I am going to do that, more tempted to do Whistler.   Could make that a better vacation with the wife.

Also looks like Galway 70.3 is no longer.  We were going to do that as a vacation as well, so now  can make Whistler that destination race.  But I need to be careful that I am not dictating to my wife where we go every year.  It's important to me that t's a joint thing,   I could do IMAZ solo easily and on my own

Decisions...

And yes, these are WTC races.  There is not really a non WTC race that I'd be interested in that I know of.

Last, my wife asks why I don't do a destination 70.3 instead of 140.6.  I just want to do a full.  I am such a different person - emotionally, mentally, physically -- than I was in 2008.  Think I can do it differently and better.

Chris, I'll be right there with you trying to get in before it sells out today. This race works the best with our schedule for next year.

Talked to my wife about it at dinner.  When offered the choice, she said she would much rather go to Whistler than Tempe - again.   I forgot, but we've been there twice, once for my DNF, once for the finish.  She said she'd gladly not go there again (not a slag on the town, but the stress of spectating, I think Whislter would give her a better experience).  I also think that's enough, so I am not going to clog up active this morning.   Will likely go CF for Canada....

Had a busy weekend working on a Red Cross clean up crew so I didn't get much s/b/r on the books. I've got some catching up to do on thread reading, but thought I'd let those of you who are using the Sufferfest videos know that Downward Spiral is worth putting in the shopping cart. Two blocks of descending intervals, and a little bonus at the end.  I have used A Very Dark Place and some of the older sessions when they were free on iTunes. Always liked them. I think DS may be the toughest one I've tried. I haven't set myself up on TR for virtual power yet, but on the Puke-O-Meter scale I scored a Near Barf this morning.

Fred D - 2012-11-19 7:26 PM Am struggling with flaring piriformis syndrome issues. Will have to stop running for awhile as my strategy of ignoring it and running anyway does not seem to be working for some reason. Definitely a bit down that I can't train more, but hoping I can swim (without much kick) and ride the road bike at least....

That stinks Fred, I hope you can get it sorted out ASAP!

Question for everyone.  At what point do you start thinking about taking water, gels etc with you for a long run (or making a bottle drop somewhere)?  The last two weeks I have run an hour and 20 mins or so and I feel no need to take anything with me but my wife gives me a bit of the stink-eye when I say I don't need anything.  If it were the middle of summer and hot I might think about it for that time frame but when it's only a few degrees above freezing...

Also, I hit 165.5 on the scale this morning so I'm at my Turkey Day weight goal a few days early!  Mind you I was in a meeting this morning and there were cookies.....

I usually bring a water bottle in a waist pack if it's over an hour.  Not necessary this time of year, but makes the run a bit more comfortable for me.

I hit 197 this morning.  Last time I was this weight was when I was going up.....   Only 3# to a "normal" BMI!

Bummer ! I know the feeling. I have not run in a week.

How long do you plan to stay off ? What is the criteria by which you start up again ?

Nice job on hitting the goal early.  for me with water it really depends on the temps.  Back in Tucson in the summer I wouldn't leave the front door without water, but come winter the rules completely change.

I  never leave home with water or anything to drink but I never run more that 1h45. Once I had to stop and ask for water, but it was really hot and I was doing a 21km. This time of year I do not need anything.

I always leave with a bit of money just in case. I have on the odd occasion stopped for a beer and I attribute it to severe dehydration. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Trainer ride done.  Who knew 30 mins could suck so bad.  Run later on this afternoon.  What's everyone else got on tap?

Bummer about the injury Fred.  Hope it heals up quickly but you are smart to be taking the break now

Fred, Have you tried ART ? I would also highly recommend the Trigger Point Therapy lower leg kit.

Well after missing out on AZ yesterday we had to make some adjustments in the focus for next year. Looks like it will be a HIM year instead of IM. I really love training for long course so this will be a bit of an adjustment. Actually I just like having the ability to eat and drink as much as possible while training for long course!

We've added Eagleman to the list of races. Any feedback on the race? I know its hot, flat and humid. Which are exactly the conditions that I train in year round. Hotels?

Easy 60 on the bike today with a few intervals. Just starting back up again...Amazing how quickly everything goes away..

Fred - have you given any consideration to strength training to help the situation?  I've been struggling with hip, glute, IT tightness, etc. for the past few months, and while massage has helped with the effects (same as would ART, or Trigger Point), it obviously doesn't help with the underlying issue.

If you're 100% sure that the cause is your bike fit, then it may not be worth thinking about.  But I am beginning to believe in the benefit of strengthening the muscles that we don't engage as much as part of the core SBR training regime.  It makes sense to me that some of muscle imbalances we create can and do have negative impacts during the SBR activities.

I'm very much just trying to ease into these - but a few sets of lunges and squats with minimal weight kicked my butt last week.  For someone running and riding thousands of km you would think it should be a nothing exercise, but it kind of highlighted how little we actually engage some of the muscles in our legs.

Anyway, just food for thought.

60 mins of threshold intervals on the trainer this morning and a 45 min run at lunch is my plan for the day.

I agree with the strength training stuff, anytime I've had issues like that my physio harps on me about doing strengthening exercises of those core supporting muscles.  It's usually squat type of exercises focusing on using glutes rather than quads (ie, stick your bum out rather than bend the knees forward

one only needs to look at my logs to know how I feel about strength training.  lol  Not to mention I am a personal trainer (who only trains Tina pretty much but that's cause I am a lazy trainer).  But, even with regular strength training I still find myself at PT periodically and it is always a muscle imbalance.  Its so sad it is funny.  Part of my problem is I actually gain muscle pretty quickly, especially considering that I am female.  Its just my body type.  So if my form is off just slightly or I over train one part and not the opposing muscle correctly I put myself out of whack.  And come to learn I shouldn't stretch my hamstrings.  I have been having hamstring issues forever and always felt I should stretch them cause tight muscles were the issue.  I was soooo backwards on that thought process.  I have long flexible hams and needed to really strengthen and shorten them a bit.

I think I have a point, but I am not sure what it is.  I'll go back to my day job I guess...
