A bento box actually increases how aerodynamic your bike is, so I have no problems leaving it on for shorter races. I'll see if I can find the podcast featuring the study on it.

Not saying that it's always positioned properly and that given my set up it makes much a difference, if any, but it's enough that I don't get concerned about having it on there. I figure it's more aero and just seems "lighter" than saddle bag, even when it contains the same things.

It would be great if you could find that podcast, Lauren!  Very interesting!  I love having my bento box during training rides for holding my cell phone!  It's the perfect size and I can peek at who is calling me and choose to ignore them if want.  Much easier than fumbling in my jersey pocket!

....but what happens if you're out on the bike course and for some reason can't continue biking?

Do you just walk (or run) back to transition with your bike if you'd like to try and continue on the run or are you done for the day?

At my first (and only) duathlon, I got a flat a few minutes into the bike. I wasn't that far from transition, maybe a half mile, so I started huffing it back. After about 30 seconds, a nice older couple in a pickup stopped and asked if I wanted a ride, which I gladly excepted. The race director came over to me when I got back to transition and told me that even though I was DQ'd for not finishing the bike, he would let me finish out the last 5k run if I wanted too. I was too bummed, so I passed on it.

Just stopped by this Sat. morn. to see what's "crack'n".  Slow news day it looks!  Hope you  are having a good weekend so far!  Mine is just getting going.  I took a 3 hour nap after my workout yesterday (I was beat from the week) and then went to bed around 10.  Yes pretty boring for a Fri. night....  So I'm feeling pretty good today!

Got my timex watch back yesterday!  woohoo!  It was in for repairs for the last 2-3 weeks.  They just ended up giving me a new transmitter strap - good as new!

Haha - you think you're boring?? Dude, I have had to do the majority of my long run in the pool for the past 3 months. I move pretty quickly in there and thus need a lot of room, so I have been waking up at 5:30 every Saturday for the past 3+ months (except last weekend) so I can get to the pool and beat the crowds. So, trust me, my Friday nights have been pretty boring. I had trouble waking up today and slept until 6:15 ish or so.

My Saturday has been good - did my 2-hr run (55' on dry land, 1:05 in the water) and am finished for the day. Nothing much going on the rest of the day. Just some R & R and dinner tonight with my parents and some cousins and aunts and uncles and stuff .

If I can stay up till 10pm on any night (weekend or weekday) it is a big accomplishment for me. Usually I try to read a book at 9pm and fall asleep after 1 page

well I have you all beat.  I went to bed around 1 am, then got up at 6:30 and decided to run.  Then I decided to take a long bike in so I am officially shot right now.  I think I'll do some strength training later to round the day off.  I'm just getting back into the groove of training   Ya'll have a great weekend!!

i was tired last night starting at 10:30, but like always, i did some self-sabotage and stayed up until 12:15.  had weird dreams that all my teeth fell out at a party and i was running to the bathroom to figure out the problem and realized i was also naked.  awesome.  i NEVER have dreams like that.  all my dreams have something to do with what's going on in my life, like, i dreamed about stealing stuff once, but probalby because i watched ocean's twelve 2x that day!  so i wonder what those dreams were about.

anyway, did a long ride today, ~56 miles.  a bit gassed, but i'm good.  i think i'm going to rest tomorrow, instead of making up my run from yesterday.  i'm actually ravenously hungry at the moment.

i think i'm going to make homemade pizza for dinner, on homemade dough.  that oughta be fun .

hope you all are having a good weekend!!!!

Hey guys, glad you're all doing well. I did my long run this AM (broken up into dry-land running and aquajogging, of course), and that's been it. I've been trying to make my rounds of inspires to everyone, but today has been a good day to catch up with friends on the phone, etc., so I've been doing a lot of that.

Now, I'm off to dinner at my parents' house. Some cousins and aunts and uncles and stuff will be there. I plan on pigging out. There won't be mashed potatoes, but apparently homemade mac & cheese and stewed tomatoes are part of the menu, so I guess I can live with that .

Have a great evening all. Tomorrow is a 4-hr ride for me. I am just hoping the rain we're supposed to get at any minute stops before I want to head out.

Oh, my laptop got all weird on me earlier today. The screen turned really really dark (could kind of make out what was on there, but couldn't read anything). It took a few hours before I had a successful restart that had the screen working properly. If I fall off the face of the earth tomorrow, it probably just means my laptop isn't working properly.

Have a great evening and an awesome Sunday, everyone. I'm off to dinner !

Happy Sunday everyone, I hope you all have a great day.

I'm heading out for my ride shortly. It rained pretty hard overnight, so the roads are very wet right now. I might just wait a little longer for them to be less wet. It's also a lot chillier than it's been the past few weeks, so I'm back to pants and arm warmers, and layers and booties (maybe) for my ride. Take care!!

yeah, where the heck did spring go? i needed long sleeves yesterday and today is even worse.  good thing it's a rest day and i'm staying inside.  i'm just hanging out BT eating a yummy canteloupe.  mmmmm, canteloupe.

so, question.  yesterday on my ride i took a couple of gels, which i just started using because hubby has a huge supply back from his ironman training days.  how do you take a gel on the bike?  i had to get off.  i don't want to litter, and i need two hands.  hubby says he'd just drink heed instead of taking gels.  looking for some other input to consider for nutrition on a long bike ride.  thanks, and have a great sunday!

Yeah, it has been raining here for the last 24 hours. Luckily, it let up for the 5k this morning. Race went well, got my PR (by about 30 secs), and it was a fun race. I'll do a mini race report later. My pace was good, but somehow I tacked an extra 30 secs on to mile-3. Not sure how, but I'll discuss more in my RR.

Have a good rest of the weekend everyone!

I either store my gels in my jersey pockets or in my bento box. I only need one hand. I just pick it up, hold it by the portion that contains all the gel, tear the top off with my teeth (I do leave it a little connected so I don't have two pieces to deal with), suck out the gel, and then return the empty wrapper to my bento box or jersey pocket. Just practice it, but if you can ride one-handed, you should be able to manage the gel one handed. It takes a little time to get down the mechanics of biting off the top (but not completely), but you'll soon get the hang of it. I now have it down to near perfection and it's almost second nature. I usually sit up when I take in a gel. I can do it in aero, but I lose a little control, so I prefer just to sit up.

You could also get a gel flask if you don't want to deal with the little wrappers. Just empty them into the gel flask and suck the gel out of it.

WOOT WOOT!!! Congrats!!!! I feel so awful, Jeremy. I was about to inspire you yesterday and my computer got all funky (I mentioned that in a post yesterday), and then I never inspired you because I forgot that I hadn't actually inspired you. I had winted to wish you good luck.

I am glad the race went so well. Congrats!!!!
