Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BigBeltz - 2012-01-19 8:01 AM Hey Everyone... as it seems to be the quasi-standard format, here I go.... Excited to be part of the group! I began training for my first triathlon in 2004, but a month before the race my nice road bike got stolen out of my car and I haven’t ridden a road bike much since. When I moved back to the Boston area after living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for 6 years I knew I would need to find some adventure in my life to keep me going. It’s taken me a year or so to realize I needed something more active and intense... so here I am.
Family Status: Engaged, no kids. Fiancee is super supportive.
Current Training: I am currently trying to put in 30-60 minutes a day, with the preference for doing two 30 minute sessions of different types. These may be back to back or morning/evening. I have been mostly swimming and running, but have logged 15 miles on a converted crappy mountain bike in the past 2 weeks or so. I have been doing this for the past month or so. Yesterday, I finally had my first great swim – I really slowed down my stroke rate and it allowed me to breath much better. Today, I swam my first 1000m piece. I was dreading the swimming, but I am finding that it may be my favorite type of training (at least at 15 degrees).
Planned 2012 Races: Wildman Sprint Triathlon (Orlando, FL); New England Season Opener Sprint Triathlon (Hopkinton, MA); and hopefully, Vikingman Triathlon Half-IM (Heyburn, ID)
Weightloss: Currently 225 (or was about a month ago). Ultimate goal is about 175lbs, though I was down to 162 when I rowed lightweight in college. Ideally, I’d like to hit 200 or break into the 190s by June.
GO PATRIOTS! You're actually the third person from Massachusetts in here... Welcome... You have some nice races ahead of you, have you ever done the season opener before? It's COLD.... Last year I volunteered it with my Triathlon team... Have you looked into joining Wheelworks tri team? I bike out of quad cycles every now and then and do the minuteman path and all around the surrounding areas, It's a great time... I believe they have group rides leaving there Saturday and Sunday morning. I actually live down in Plymouth and belong to the Baystate Triathlon team. Weight loss, is a common goal with many of us so keep it up... Great job on the slowing down the stroke rate. You should look into joining a masters swim class... Are you going to concentrate on the sprint distance this year? |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Scott... I was just reading through the posts and noticed that there were 2 or 3 from Mass... Kind of cool. Yes... GO PATS!!! (though I am a much more avid (or rabid) Red Sox fan. I haven't looked into the Wheelworks team, but that is where I am planning to purchase a new road bike in a couple of weeks. Hoping to pick up the last 2011 Trek 2.3 and outfit with aero bars, etc. My hope is to do a half ironman at the end of the summer and to make that my focus. As I have never actually raced in a triathlon, I was hoping to do at least two sprint triathlons prior to that (maybe a third). I have never done the season opener and I can believe that it is cold... After all its May in Hopkinton! I am not stuck on that race, as I am not signed up yet... but the timing was right. I am trying to do a race about every 2 months. Plymouth (and the Cape) are a great place to be. For some reason I have always wanted to ride from Bourne to Provincetown and back. No idea how I got that idea in my head, but maybe I'll have to put that on the list for this spring... or a warm winter day with the weather we've had. |

Nice bio man... 8lbs that's nothing... just remember that 3500 calories is one pound. So cut 500 calories off your food intake and that's one pound per week |

My first year of triathlons, I basically did a triathlong every week for 2 months. My first year I did 14 of them Well, bourne to Provincetown is 78 miles, I know that because I do the MS 2 day ride and have done that two years in a row. So 156 miles in one day... Trust me when you get to the hills in truro, at miles 60 you don't want to turn around and come back.
As for your 1/2, you should do the Pumpkinman 1/2 in Berwick ME. There will be three of us in this group that will be doing that one. I did it last year, and I loved the course. |

Weird how different our workout is... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well the first 300 is me before class and the last 150 after class to get my desired yardage in. I would think the middle would be similar minus distances and times. I steal the sheet and log all my workouts. Do you remember what yours was? |

Member ![]() | ![]() I'm currently tracking my nutrition on MyFitnessPal.com. They have a fairly extensive database. I do wear a heart rate monitor. Find it really helps with my running! Although I am having a tough time figuring out my distance for my training log, in my spin class as our bikes are fairly basic with no bells and whistles. Today I rode for an hour class. I could also use some help with swim drills. Typically I just swim laps. Any suggestions? Oh, and I know I have a guy's name but I'm a woman. Better add an avatar! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() everlong - 2012-01-10 10:24 AM This was this morning's masters swim class, 70 minutes. 100 free The above is a warm up. I hit class early as often as I can for extra warm up. So the first 500 yards is just me and the next 450 part of the routine. This is the inveral part of the workout will drills mixed in.
Switching back and forth between swim, kick or using a pull buoy will make you more aware of how you're using those different body parts. Cool down. 100 free If you're starting out swimming it may be hard to know what to do without a class. Most people, myself included, just go and swim until they're tired. You're much better off doing intervals and drills. So how do you know what interval you should use? Warm up swimming 300 yards at a slow pace. You can do this as 6-50's, 3-100's or just a straight through. I prefer going on the 100's and using a 10 second rest interval. After your warm up swim 100 as fast as you can where you are finishing at the same speed you start out at. You do not want a positive split where you swim the first 50 in a minute but the second 50 takes a minute-twenty. Whatever your number is multiply that by 1.25 using seconds. So let's say you do it in 120 seconds (2 minutes). 120 X 1.25 is 150 seconds (2 and a half minutes). This should be your base interval that you do comfortably. When swimming at your base interval you want to have good form and bring the intervals in at 135-140 seconds so that you're getting 10-15 seconds of rest between the intervals. You can also do faster intervals mixed in. So a good 1000 yard base workout to start out at. 200 Free 4X50 on :10 RI (warm up) 4X50 @ 75 seconds (half your base based on distance) 4X100 @ 150 seconds 100 pick a drill 100 easy cooldown I posted this at the start of the thread on making your own swimming workouts. For drills you need a set of paddles, fins and a pull buoy. You can search youtube for swimming kick drills, vertical kick drills, pull with paddles, one are drills, closed fist drills, finger tip drag drills, high swinger drills. If you can't find them I'll do my best to describe them but obviously a visual is so much easier. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() My swim training plan is basically to try and get up to 1000yard piece and then begin to add drills around that. At the moment I switch from freestyle to breast stroke almost every length. I am still working on my breathing and lowering my stroke rate, which as it gets better I try to complete more lengths in a crawl. Does this make sense to those of you with an understanding of the swim?
On a separate subject, do people use BT to analyze nutrition or are other sites easier/better? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you're better of doing intervals. If you can only do 25 yards free at a time then do 25 yard intervals on ten seconds rest. A thousand yards is a good base starting distance. Watch some of the videos that were posted earlier in the thread and work those drills into your 25's. You'll have 40-25's to do some map out what you're doing in advance. I write it down when I workout alone and it keeps me from forgetting how many I've done. Nothing wrong with mixing breast in. After a workout or two start mixing in some 50's. Couple of workout later some 100's. Read the how to determine your intervals post I made at that point to start to work on speed. Build your base first. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Snowed over night and my long run was scheduled for today. 15 miles and 2:14:13 @8:56/mile and 140 average heart rate was a good effort but way too long on the dreadmill for my liking. I had never done longer than 9 miles on it previously. Sneakers and socks were drenched by the end. |

![]() | ![]() Yesterday Squat ( to grass baby!), bench, and pull ups/pull downs. Went out for a few drinks last night so today will be a bit rough. Drinking is something i should probably cut back on but it probably wont happen. Today I have an hour long massage to help with my hip bursaitis. I'll have her work my hip, leg and glute for pretty much the full hour. Its been helping I think. Then swim! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Snow and ICE has pretty much shut everything down around here, we are totally not equiped to deal with it. I am planning on starting my official training on Monday so hope it is all gone by then. I am down with running in the cold but I worry about hurting myself in the ice and ruining the season. Darin |

![]() | ![]() Snow actually gives you a good amount of traction as long as its just snow. But like you mentioned, if there is ice involved best to stay away. |
![]() ![]() |
Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I really enjoy running on the trails around my house and with this ice storm the branches are breaking off and causing a ton of damage. Not real safe to run in the forest right now. ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() everlong - 2012-01-20 3:39 PM Great job Craig. I log my workouts here and it's not locked down if anybody has interest. Thanks. My #s pale in comparison. Maybe after a few more years I'll step it up to a HIM. I want to build a nice base though and I want to get more comfortable in the saddle (25 miles was about all the time I wanted to spend in the saddle last year due to comfort). After experimenting with various seats (SMP Pro, ISM Adamo) I am now using a saddle from John Cobb that seems to be working for me (at least on the trainer - we'll have to wait and see how it feels when I get it on the road in the Spring). |

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, I would love to join your group. I need a lot of help!
Current Training: I just decided to do this this week - training is zero at the moment. Spent the week looking into gyms and training schedules - found this site! I have a ton of questions but don't really know what to ask... I have never ran in my life, nor even jogged. I can swim good and did lap swimming before I got pregnant, never worked up to this much though. I have a mountain bike and use to do downhill mt biking on a beginner level - just for one year - a year and a half ago.
Planned 2012 Races: ChelanMan July 22nd - Swim 800 meters, Bike 13.1 miles, Run 3.1 miles. Weightloss: My weightloss goal is 130 - I am currently 168.
Decide - Commit - Succeed! |
