Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread Hope everyone is doing well in their training. I had to drop out awhile back. Was feeling burnt up at my main race in Sept. The prospect of an IM distance was too much and dropped everything longer. Even redid plans for next year because of it. Everything short course for awhile. Oh well, maybe some time in the future. Still the only flat course I'll consider traveling to. Saw some wondering about this event being an inaugural. I really had no concerns with that. It's the same guys who do Beach to Battleship and loads of other East Coast events. I've never done one of their events, but also can't remember seeing another group get such positive reviews in their races. Sure not everything may go *perfect*, but they'll generally get it right. Somewhere it was mentioned that this was their only event going on near that time, so they'll have a lot of people available to work it if they need as they can do more than on event at a time. Also quite certain they'll have the full event. Doubt they were really expecting it to fill the first year. They're not MDot size and they know it. Beach to Battleship isn't huge and that's been going on for a few years. Edited by brigby1 2012-12-01 6:38 PM |

Veteran 126 Lakeland | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread You should look into renting one. I did it two years ago for IMFL and it was way cheaper than buying and you get top quality $800 wetsuit to race in for like $75. |

People will say "oh you must not eat any of that stuff then" couldn't be further from the truth I've been using the Cream Pies as fuel on the bike. Got the idea from a local Cat 1 cyclist. Sounds weird until you try it. Package is easy to use. They don't crumble or fall apart, not without some serious squishing or mashing that could mess with anything. So far they don't freeze solid (like Powerbars do). They won't melt in the heat either. They don't leave a sticky residue like gels do. They may have a little more air than some would prefer, but so far it hasn't been bad. Body is adjusting to it. They're also a lot cheaper than many energy food solutions. Member 100 | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread How have I never known about The Walking Dead? Totally made a 5 hour trainer ride not so bad! Today was my first longer brick and I felt pretty good. Pretty tired tonight, but at the time all was well. Looks like next week I need to learn how to run when the ground has snow on it.... Almost there. |

Master 2490 Atlanta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread Well, I'm glad this weekend is over! I can't even blame it on big volume, but I'm knackered. Last long session is 12/30 and I'm counting the days until then already... OTOH, weather has literally been so nice it's like I ordered it from a catalogue. This racing-in-January business is starting to look a little less crazy. I hadn't really thought past this year's race but maybe I'll do B2B and Bone Island every year and blow off the rest of the season? |

Almost there. 5 hours? My god that sounds pretty bloody rough. Training in DC has gone better than expected. We've caught a few lucky breaks with the weather and we've gotten several plus 50 days. Managed to get in some solid long rides and good long runs. Really enjoying the late season training so far. All that said, I'm looking forward to the Key West weather. |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread Its all inside from hear on out for me. The weather hasn't gotten bad yet, should snow later this week but just to simulate closer to race day weather would rather sweat like a beast on the trainer and treadmill than be all bundled up in 30 degree weather for a run or ride. 4 long runs, 4 long bikes then its taper time! |

Member 91 | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread Someone mentioned vinegar to treat jellyfish/MOW stings...may I suggest something that is far far more effective. Adolf's Meat Tenderizer. It is a miracle cure for JF and MOW. I grew up on Hilton Head and worked for years on the water. We always had Adolf's on board the boats or at the beach.
You'll thank me later |

The weather hasn't gotten bad yet, should snow later this week but just to simulate closer to race day weather would rather sweat like a beast on the trainer and treadmill than be all bundled up in 30 degree weather for a run or ride I've been curious on this. I'm fine with the boredom aspect with indoor training. However, I get mild plantar fasciitis EVERY time I run on a treadmill. Therefore, I've been bundling and doing all runs outdoors. I'm starting to wonder if 75 degrees in Florida is going to feel like 100 to me since I've been doing some runs in the 20s. I guess it doesn't matter if it does, I'm not going to risk injury this late, just curious if anybody has done this. Winter training is weird... |

Granted it hasn't been anywhere close to cold where I'm at in Georgia but the treadmill tears me up for some reason. I don't care how cold it gets I'm running ouside. Like you injury is not worth the risk. When it has been "cold" I've worn more clothes than I normally would so I'm a tad bit warmer than usual. I'm not sure if that logic makes sense but it beats being inside. |

I did IMTX this spring and after a crazy sort of mild winter we had a cool spring. My last 20 miler was 2.5 weeks out and it was 30 degrees. Most of my long runs I would come home with ice crystals hanging off me. My outdoor rides were a joke cause I was so bundled up I felt like I had no feel for the bike. I got off the plane in TX and instantly started to sweat like a pig trying to acclimate to the temp. So I figured this time I would try and go the other way. I bought a indoor clock/weather temp reader for my workout room to see what temp my room gets on my long runs and rides. It usually is low 70's after an hour or two which would be comparable to race day...maybe Heck this is IM #8 and I have yet to get it right so its worth trying anything right? |

It works just the other way for me...I don't care how cold it is, I'm good with running outside. The only reason I use a treadmill is because it feels easier on my knees. That, or it's too hot outside. I've had a few runs on our rails2trails path right after it snowed when I would be the only person coming or going. Absolutely lovely stuff... On a less lovely note, I looked at Key West's weather today: blowing 20kts continuous and forecast the same off into the future. Groaannn. |

Master 1402 Cumming, Georgia | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread Sat - 5:45 bike / 1:00 run (I may ride for 6:00 depending on how I feel) Sun - 2:45 run I'm trying to decide on when I want to taper. My current Be Iron Fit plan calls for taper to start 3 weeks out but I'm on the fence about pushing that to 2 weeks out instead. 3 weeks out still has pretty descent volume so I may just see how I feel when it comes around. I'm starting to get really excited now. |

10 | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread Our 50 ride/6 run plan today was altered when we rode into a state forest and saw more (no offense intended) rednecks, pickups and guns than we've ever seen on one road in our lives. Seems this is the one day they can hunt deer out there. Not wanting to be mistaken for a deer we packed up our antlers and turned around. We decided that even with the 18 miles lost it was close enough and called it a day. Running 12-14 tomorrow. Also I found this site for average January weather in Key West because I'm a weather geek. http://weatherspark.com/averages/30220/1/Key-West-Florida-United-States |

Member 100 | Subject: RE: Bone Island Tri - Full Iron Course : Official Thread 85/1 brick today turned to 60/3 brick. I couldn't get comfortable on my trainer today... 2 mile swim 16 mile run tomorrow. I'm getting to the point where I just want to get it over with already! Long runs aren't s enjoyable when it's 20 and snowing as sunny and 70. This may be the last winter iron distance I do for awhile. We'll see how badass it is I guess. |

I am still 4-5 hours north of Key West, but water temp was 78 and OWS was nice without wet suit. That can change though in 30 days so not getting too excited. Did long ride and it was 83 degrees today! |

SnowEither snow is exceptionally unlikely to fall at this location in January or this station does not reliably report precipitation types.

If the collective braintrust on Slowtwitch is to be believed, a disc is always faster no matter what the wind does. Folks have said you don't notice crosswinds as much as you'd think, esp. if you're not a small person. YMMV. |

I'll be rolling on Sram S80s. It's that or a cheap set of Alex's that came on my entry level roadie, so I guess it's not a hard decision. I'll take my chances with crosswinds. |
