Figure I need to burn off some of those Christmas calories! Workout felt really sluggish today - good thing Christmas only comes once a year! jon |

Member 13 Chehalis, Washington | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN I did not run Christmas weekend, but had run a 5K with my friends Cheryl and Candice (also in this mentor group) on the 22nd. We had a great time and stayed pretty steady on our times - except for Candice, who blew our doors off!! Great job Candice! We are planning on running a 5 mile White Elephant run on January 5th. Goals for the New Year include increasing my training to include more swim and bike, and to shave more time off of my running. This will be my year to clean up my diet, also. Thanks for all of the positive comments! Happy New Year to everyone! |

It's huge at any distance. CongratsJayne go get em.OK I lied, last post for a while. No races for me this weekend, working on running and weight lifting for now. Back in the pool next week, and maybe some spin classes. Need to work on a plan for 2013. As far as accomplishments, I hit none of my workout distances, and was actually less time training from the year before. Did a lot of weight training so I definitely feel stronger. My greatest accomplishment was taking 30 minutes off my Olympic time biking was a lot stronger. Good luck this weekend Jayne, you will be awesome, make sure you bring your wetsuit |

Veteran 256 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed I'm going to kick the training up after the New Year's. I eased off on the training a lot after my first Int'l Tri in November. Somehow I need to get my swimming up to par with the other two events. Seriously BOP in the swim. I may need to just jump in with both feet (pun absolutely intended) and join a Masters swim program. It doesn't seem I can make myself swim enough, all by myself. But the thought of getting up and getting in the water at 5:30 or 6 am is less than appealing (though I am a morning person and run/bike early all the time). Bill Hi Bill, I find that swimming in the morning opens a training slot in the afternoon or evening for a Run or Hard Ride. If you're bothered by chlorine scented cologne, I recommend a) take a quick shower before getting in the pool. this fills your pores with fresh water and your skin will not absorb as much pool water. b) Try one of the gel soaps specifically designed for swimmers. I've had good results with triswim body wash. Sylvia's swimwear in Bellevue keeps some in stock and they give a nice 10% discount if you swim with a masters group.. You may be able to get it from Sports Authority. Of course the stuff is on line. http://goswim.com/detail.aspx?ID=885. The only caution is the cap is not exactly bomb proof. I finally learned to keep the stuff in a zip lock freezer bag. Run Happy.

Master 1497 Maryland | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed No racing here this weekend. I considered running the first in the area indoor marathon. But the 211 laps in one direction would probably set me up for injury on one side. The RD did not think he could coordinate a change of direction but maybe after this initial race they can figure it out. My biggest accomplishments for 2012 were to heal and educate myslef about autoimmune disease, hit the gym to get strong, and race for the LOVE of racing

At least I will be with Michelle and Cheryl, don't think I would make it there by myself. Hope I don't run over too many people. lol Anyone have any suggestions on how far and what stroke to use for my first swim? Should I push and see what I can do so I know what to work on? or take it slow and easy? |

Hope I don't run over too many people. lol Anyone have any suggestions on how far and what stroke to use for my first swim? Should I push and see what I can do so I know what to work on? or take it slow and easy? Yay for you!! (And fwiw, to reference an earlier post, I LOVE eau de chlorine!! Love it even more when I sweat chlorine smell on the trainer... but that involved bike riding and swimming, so for now I'm not experiencing either of those pleasures.) Anyway, I would not try to push it -- you will just die after a few laps. (Not meaning that as any offense to you... if I hadn't swum in 13 years I would die at 200 yards if I got in and tried to push it.) I would take it easy, and think about form. Google some drills to do, and just enjoy the feel of the water. Maybe alternate 25 yards drill with 25 yards working on a nice stroke. My favorite drills are catch-up, sculling, dps (distance per stroke -- hold a nice streamline with one arm out and one arm by your side for several kicks, like 8-12). Smile, enjoy yourself, and if it gets hard, tell yourself how awesome you are for being in there and doing something nice for your body!!!! |

Expert 847 Brevard, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Did a little 2 mi run yesterday afternoon, and got on the pool for some swim-therapy today. Swimming is like a good massage for my body and just what I needed after tapering this week. Now, I'm off to pack up my gear for tomorrow morning and then take a little nap. I have a pre-race pasta party at a friends tonight. It will be nice to hang out with some other crazy runners and see what their plans and goals are for tomorrow. We have fresh snow on the ground and it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day to be in the woods. Low 24 / High 30 with light snow tomorrow. Race starts at 8:10 and I'm hoping to be finished before 3pm. Send some helpful energy my way. Love me long time? |

Usually I am very busy so I don't have time to eat except when I should. The kids are on break now and there are way too many goodies in the house. With the kids on break, I am not so busy and have more time to eat. Lol We will be packing up the 8 tins of cookies to go in the freezer today. They are too accesible sitting on the counter! This is me!! Usually I'm squeezing in a meal that is not quite enough, but gets me to the next snack. But with everyone home and lots of baking going on, there is lots of grazing. I know my body, though -- I'll hop on the scale once the kids are back in school, focus for a week, and I'll be where I was before this holiday indulging. I made my husband take some of the caramel corn I made into work today, so that's gone, phew. And when other kids are over I'm VERY generous with the Christmas cookies right now!!! Eat up, kids! Biggest accomplishment for 2012 was running more miles this year then I ever have in my life, and I think I passed up my old record sometime in November. I'm in a good place with life balance and I'd like to keep it there for awhile. Kyla, so cool to have another stay at home mom here! My kiddos are older (8 and almost 11) so they are in school full time. Some how I am still very busy. People always ask when I will go back to work. Don't think it's happening any time soon. We are blessed that I can stay home. How old are your kiddos? |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Ok, last post, I promise. Just got back from a crappy bike ride. Was slow as my legs were tired and got a massive charlie horse in my left calf. Bleh! Got home and used the foam roller on it and stretched. Dang muscle is still sore. I hope it is better tomorrow so I can run. Kinda limping around right now. Jayne, sending helpful energy your way! I will be thinking about you tomorrow. Can't wait to hear how it goes! |

Master 2501 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed JAYNE!!! Have an awesome race! Tear up those trails, but don't tear up your body! Enjoy it all and smile when it hurts! Can't wait to read the RR! Margo -- sorry about the calf. Others here have battled calf issues, so maybe they will jump in! And on the SAHM front, my kids are 10 and 12 (5th and 7th grade). Whenever I think I'm ready to go back to work or school (as I would likely career-change at this point), I feel like there is something that happens or comes up and I am VERY glad to have the flexibility to be here for them. Plus, my husband works a crazy stressful job and is on the go quite a bit, so it keeps the family running smoothly not to work. Not that I need to justify that, of course!! But yeah, I have a busy schedule and am rarely home. This year I've been better about building in runs with girlfriends (and Steve!!), and even coffee or lunch here and there. It's been very good for me and my friendships! |

Member 51 Dupont, Washington | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Went for my first bike ride this season, last one was beginning of July. It felt horrible. The excuses were running through my mind, "haven't rode in so long", "need a road bike instead of this steel mt bike with fat nobby tiress", "need bike shoes", "need a bike computer" etc. etc. Then the thought occured.... "I have everything I need right now. Intense burn in my thighs, pounding heart in my chest, air rushing in my lungs." As long as I have that instead of a full belly on the couch I am getting STRONGER, that is all that matters. Feel the burn, hear the pound |
