Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Changed it up and went to stroke night for Masters instead of on my own. Glad to be working out again after a few days of being sick. 2650 yds. The stroke work was 3 ( 3 x 2 x 50) with some free between every pair of 50's. Of course I chose fly for everything instead of rotating IM strokes like most everyone else. But did it as fly down, 1-arm drill back. Fun way to get back into things. |

Wasn't sure how I'd do being sick the few days before, but felt past the worst of it. 200 free started ok, matching speed with another 2:15 seed in the next lane for about the first 75, but then lost it. Energy just gone and faded big time. Ended up with a 2:26. Chalking it up to still recovering, especially as that did not feel like a normal fade or later race burn. Dropped out of the 500 free because of that. Wasn't much point in swimming what would be a practice rep time. Had signed up for a 50 fly in between and went through with that. Felt fine technically, but not as fast as I'd like. Still ended up with a :33. I haven't been to a meet in years. I suppose that getting involved would amp up my swimming training, but I'm not sure I want to do that. Sounds like a rough day...I think you did the right thing in just kind of accepting that you weren't all there and bagging the 500. Mentally tough to take that kind of thing. |

Felt fine technically, but not as fast as I'd like. Still ended up with a :33. Thanks. It was tough, but it did feel like the right choice. Lots of things going on, so something else will come up in not too long. That meet was scy. I think basically all of them should be up to Nationals at the start of May. Then it might mix up some more, or be more meters. Well, open water will pick more so, but meters tend to continue on late into the fall. Some will still have yards as it's all they can do. Definitely confuses things though there are general seasons for each. Being at and in the meets really does tend to put everything out there. And amping up the training is one reason I'll do it. Not as much about doing more for me, but keeping on top of things. All the things that swimmers do that triathletes tend to write off as being inconsequential towards their goals are suddenly highlighted much more so. Certainly nerve-wracking at times, but think it's good to go through every now and then to help keep the focus. Not so much in going hard (though you will), but in paying attention to all these different parts in training. Lots more than we really give credit to has to become second nature. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Okay--1500 TT done. Not ideal conditions but whatever. 25:30. It's about 30 seconds faster than my last one in the fall. Very not rested--I had a hard run this AM (90 minutes with about 30 minutes of tempo, a bit hot), actually took a nap after, and still felt pretty tired. Managed to swim the first 200m way too hard, my hamstrings started cramping, and had to pull way back for the rest of the first 500m or so; got into a better rhythm after that. I don't think I was pushing as hard as in a real 1500m race, more like a competitive tri swim, as swimming solo and feeling tired from run. (No one else in pool, my normal situation on Saturday!) I did get into a rhythm and felt pretty strong throughout. Arms tired after but could have run to my bike and kept going with a race if needed! I would really like to see the underside of 25--think that is doable if more rested and better pacing, but maybe need someone to pace with/swim against--not sure how that would happen in the pool here! Wish there was ANY kind of master's scene here--there's a small club at the other end of the city (hour+ taxi ride away) but just fitness swimmers and a few triathletes--no meets. It's ridiculous--our school program isn't very high-powered, and most of the HS swimmers don't train as much as I do--if teachers could hold school records, I'd hold the 400m free!--but they get to complete every two weeks or so; I never do. 3000m total in the workout, 60,300m total since January. Extreme Veteran 2263 Ridgeland, Mississippi | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Switched gyms officially today, and it has a 25M pool. I did a light 1000 swim to test it out. 31,600 yds + 1000m. Should I just convert my total yards to meters for simplicity? |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 If you log on BT you can change your training log settings and it will do that automatically. I sometimes swim in a yard pool at home in Oregon but meters here; I keep it all in meters so once I go home in summer there will start to be all these crazy random decimals in my swim totals! Will have to look into a tempo trainer. It's next to impossible to have stuff sent here (even if the company will do it, at least half of it "disappears" somewhere en route); maybe in US this summer, unless they sell them in Singapore. My life is crazy--if I run out of electrolyte tabs, I have to go to Singapore, if I can't find someone to carry them in for me. (For some reason they're classified as a pharmaceutical, so sports stores, such as we have, can't sell them. Pharmacies don't sell the sports kind, only Pedialyte, because sick people don't need Nuun.) Ditto for running shoes, and pretty much anything tri-related--it has to wait until my next Singapore jaunt. |

Plus, even with your relatively low volume running, I know you can still crush the run. 3350 IM workout tonight to finish out the month. Just over 60,000 for that and just over 120,000 for the year. Need to stop getting sick! Everyone else coming along? You're a machine Ben! ------- 30,065 for me since Jan 31. Ever since my neck injury last year, I have been only breathing to the left. It now feels totally awkward and slow when I breathe right. I've added working on that to my to-do list. Did repeat 100s today and was 5sec/100 slower breathing right than on my left. Damn :/ |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 'Nother 3000, for 63,300m. (Yes, I'm boring. My pool time is really fixed, and a 3000m workout usually fits in perfectly. Anything beyond 3400m is a push time-wise.) Mixed up the paces today with main set of 400m @ threshold (1:40), 4 X100m below (1:31-1:33); and so on for 300 (5:50), 3 X 100m, 200m (3:10), 2 X100m (all 100's in 1:31-1:33). It was no problem to hit the faster 100 splits as I had a longer rest interval--doing them on 2 minutes. I was struggling with asthma tonight--breathing never felt right on the longer repeats, esp. into/out of the turns. I did a long outdoor ride yesterday and air quality was not great, which probably triggered it. I kept debating whether to get out and use my inhaler but it never got to that level. Found it was hard to get breathing right on the longer stuff but easier for the faster 100's--this is pretty consistent for me. No idea why. |

"Just count" does not work I count by 50, and repeat "1 of 5", "2 of 5", "3 of 5". sometimes I screw that up too. So, much to the consternation of my coach, I use my watch. I know I swim approx 2:00 per 100, so when approximately 6min is up, I have swum 300m. |
