Hey Gang, great first week of running the gauntlet!  Looks like there are a few straglers to get thier #'s posted but we're looking great anyways!  Had a good week overall myself but had to take it kinda easy due to some pain in the knees.  Planning an all out asault on the body over the next few weeks, this was the result of a night of no adult supervision no women), heavy drinking (Yagerbombs, numerous!) and a collection of Girls Gon Wild and Robot Chicken!!  Hope everyone is healthy and I think I am over my hangover today.!!!!!

Pain inthe knees, Yagerbombs, and Girls GOne Wild... Nice training routine. I think you should stick with it at least for the month of January... Good for the Zen!

not to mention it's building a base in multiple disciplines!

Who else thinks the scrambled legs team should save smack talk for when they set a real goal or two?? Someone should tell them the time dreaming about running doesn't count!

Brian I forgot to reply to you, I am about 300 to 350 miles from Sacramento, depending if the event is north or south (or west ) of down town. It is odd but most of Oregon and most of Nevada are closer to me than Sacramento. Reno is 200 miles and Eugene/Bend are 250 ish miles I think.

Keep in mind that the closest McDonnalds is 100 miles away as is the nearest stoplight with all 3 colors.

I have a 44 mile route where I do not have to drop out of my clips on the bike. However, the road is rough and well they do not belive in paving anything wider than the width of the car either. They actually cut gaps in the paving that are up to 2 inches wide every 20 feet and then you have the cattle guards....

My running buddy was going running today, so I felt guilty letting her brave the weather by herself. I feel like such a wimp when I think that it's cold when it's only 53 degrees and a small 20 mph wind.... but... I've been living in these temperate climes for the past 16 years.

It was fun running along the Embarcadarro watching the waves crash over the sidewalk. That just doesn't happen too often. The rain really kicked in just as I got back to the office.

5.2 more miles down. Only 39 more miles to go for the week and 84 more miles to go this month. Does anyone else think that running around and around for 130 miles a month is only somewhat pointless ?

Yeah - I am wondering which running team has the highest overall mileage goal?

As far as "Running Distance" alone goes.... L.E.M. does.

That said, it's difficult to compare stuff like this. There are a lot of people who struggle to run even a mile or two. For them, achieving their goal will be a challenge - even though their goal number may be lower than some of the L.E.M. goals.

Also, there are also 2 swim teams and 2 biking teams - which makes it difficult to really compare "mileage" across the teams.

But yes, I did assign a lot of people with high mileage run goals to team L.E.M. (Not ALL of the high goals, but many.) I thought that those in this group might be on the same "wavelength" in terms of training, and would be able to motivate one another. Also, some of you were on the same teams in previous challenges, and I figured that having a "buddy" would be a positive thing.

Regardless of the "team assignments" though.... Hopefully, people (on all the teams) have set goals that challenge them and push them. And if they reach that goal this month, they should be proud of their accomplishments. Or if they don't reach their goal, but they trained harder than they have before.... well, that's something they should be proud of, too!

As for the smack talk - yep, it's all part of the fun. And yes, L.E.M. is the running-by-distance team with the highest combined mileage goal.

So to clarify what Dee is saying; LEM is the greatest Challenge Team of all time. I love how she puts us up on a pedastal but subtle enough that the lesser teams will not pick up on it! It is okay Dee, these people will have to learn what losing is like sooner or later. You can not coddle them forever. hehehehe.

Still sucking thin air here, got 7.5 miles in but it hurt, puts me at 40/90 miles for the month. I was fine at a nice slow steady pace of about 9:45 min per mile for the first 5 miles or so and then wam out of nowhere massive cramp on the right side of my gut. I worked it out with a half mile of walking then picked up a slower jog, but it came back. This will be a nice little science experiment.. how long does it take to adjust to a 4500 foot altitude change. I am already stuck at a 40 percent reduction in distance and oh well.

I was reading about an Olympic tri in Boulder Colorado. The first problem is that it woudl be my first Olympic tri, 2nd it would be an increase in altitude of 5000 feet from where I will be for the month prior, 3rd, the bike has a wicked 15 percent grade (up) for part of the course. I guess I will have to find a 15 % grade and play on it for a while. That sounds kind of steap to me.

Ok - coming from California it has taken me a good deal of years to get used to this temperature- the last couple of days we have had a "heat wave".  50 is just plain balmy this time of year

20 F here this week in the am though it has been getting up to a balmy 33 around noon. I hope that the ice melts off the roads by this weekend so I can get off the dreadmill and get some fresh air. 53 F would be really really warm.

AND I did 5km last night including the 3km time trial with my running group.  WOW!  That was awesome

Did you all get my "encouragement" inspires yesterday?  (or today your time... I can't keep up with these silly time zones...

Yes my Aussie team-mate I did get and appreciate the inspire

Baowolf- racing at altitude if you don't live at altitude is hard- very, very hard. I did Xterra West in 2003 the first it was held at Big Bear. I flew out there from sea level, camped at around 6000 ft, and the course topped out at 8200 ft. By race morning I was sucking wind just walking to the freaking bathroom. The swim was about 5800 ft then we rode to 8200 ft dropped to around 6000 ft for T2 and then ran 2 5 km laps that climbed to around 8000 ft and then back down. There were pictures of the PROs 'walking/hiking' portions of the run. It was harder than any half ironman race I've ever done and yet the distance were only 1.5 K, 32 K, 10 K. What I learned was that you either need to be at elevation for at least 2 and closer to 4 weeks before racing or you need to arrive at elevation less than 24 hours before the race. I was fine Fri and Sat but totally sucking wind on Sun. I will say it was one of the coolest rides I've ever done on my mtn bike.

Keep on running fellow LEMmings!

I live at 4500. I was vacationing at sea level for 2 weeks, so atm I am just readjusting to my home. This summer I will again be vacationing at low altitude and then to do a tri back at high altitude will probably be hurting. I am taking careful note of how long it is taking me to adjust back to regular workouts. I dropped the pace over the past 3 days and have settled at a sad but sustainable pace. I will test it this weekend to see if I am back to snuff or not.

That 15 percent grade is scaring me a bit though at the Boulder tri. The overall course is nothing like what you went through, the rise is only 1200 feet 5400 to 6600 or some such, but it takes place in a very short distance.

Anyway, I can't really up my Tri distance until I get some swim time (and lessons).

But, chock up another 8.2 miles for me tonight 49 (ish)/90. Probably not much running before Sunday though. My bike is calling me and I need to toss a rest day in the week somewhere.

I was only able to get 4.7 in last night after work because something is going on with my stomach/intestines.  Had to run right into the house, do not pass go do not collect $200, right to the bathroom.

My stomach hasn't been right since.  So I didn't run this morning either.  Hope it clears up soon!  But that is why I built a little bit of a cushion into my goal for the month.  You never know what's going to happen.
