Hey guys. I'm back in irrational freak out mode. Now I'm worried my long bikes wern't long enough and my long runs not long enough! Sigh. My longest ride was 6:00 and my longest run 2:30. My plan didn't have anything longer though...so I should just be content going with my plan. I guess I was always going to suffer a bit on race day though...It ironman....haha.

Just looked over my taper schedule. Taper looks so measly...Haha.

I know there was a discussion on the IM Distance forum about the run last month.  There are alot of plans and coaches that call for no more than 2:30 or 16 mile runs.

My coach doesn't really have anything crazy long going on either.  I never have a ride over 5hrs on the schedule and my runs don't get too long either (I actually over ran a little last weekend, shame on me).  I also go fairly easy on the weekends because I have quality sessions during the week and wouldn't be able to execute properly if I was too beat up from the weekend trying to hit race pace for everything.

I've got about another week of quality work before I start backing off about 10 days out.... a little jealous of you all in taper mode already!

I'm going with a once piece all day, but haven't decided which one. I have (2) 2010 Orca and (1) 2011 Orca. I've used both the 2010 suits in races up to HIM, and long rides up to 5.5 hours. I used the 2011 on my last HIM with no issues but got some slight chafing on my century ride Sunday. The suit is just a bit more loose than the 2010, but it's got a better (and a bit thicker) chamois. I was all set to use the 2011 for LP until I had the chafing on Sunday. It's just another thing to fret about for 3 weeks

I'm looking at doing a full change in T2. BT top and LG tri shorts for the bike, and then my Rochester Area Triathletes (R.A.T.s) top and tri shorts for the run. The bike gear seems to work well on the bike for the distance, and what I have for the run tends to give me a little more compression for the legs on the run. That and they seem to work well in that order based off the training weekend up in Placid.

Same tri top/bottom all day. Only thing I might change is my socks if it is raining a lot.

Probably 2 piece all day. I've got a pair of Zoot shorts, nike sports bra and a CWX tri top with a big pocket in the back. I might have an extra dry fit shirt in my T2 bag for the run just in case I feel like switching. My CWX top is all mesh in the back so it vents really well and no chafing anywhere so I will probably end up running in that but you never know. I think changing would just stress me out to be honest...more to think about! Haha. I'm going to have to remember to sunscreen though...my super pastiness will not appreciate the sun...I did all my outdoor long rides with a jersey to avoid the sunburn!

Same for me.  Going to put on my sunblock, chamois buttr, body glide, vaseline, then my tri-suit first thing in the morning (and aside from a possible sock change) wear the same tri-suit all day.  Man it's going to stink when I get done.

I have two different Zoot Ultra tri suits.  I plan to wear the newer one but am brining both.  One is solid black the newer one is white/blue trim and greyish.

Team kit two piece all day.  No socks on the bike, then socks on the run, that is all.

I too must confess to being another who questions whether I am prepared enough, as life just keeps throwing interferences with training.  The past weekend I had the privilege of hosting a family reunion at my house – yes, scheduled for the end of peak training week.  Although I protested that this was not a good week, I was over ruled by a large clan of people who thought otherwise.  So, while I should have been training, I found myself (a little resentfully) cleaning and preparing for guests instead.  As I remember someone writing not to miss key sessions, I did manage to squeeze in a 97 mile bike ride and a 3 hour run (in very hot and humid weather).  If I wouldn’t have gotten those in, I really would have freaking out.  Now I feel like I have to do the training I should have last week as well as what is on my schedule for this week just to make up for what I didn’t do.  Yet – I know I don’t recover as fast, esp. in this hot humid weather.  I have to agree with you, mndymond and  mrbbrad, that I now feel like I should have before my HIM, but full Ironman may be too much of a reach yet.

Tri-Wog StL – may I ask what you do for nutrition on your long bike rides?  I am still experimenting, but have to confess I never feel so strong at the end of a long ride that I feel like putting in intervals.

Tripadigin – I know someone who completed the Florida Ironman last November, shortly after surgery for a broken wrist.  He said it was tougher on the bike, but he was still able to do it.  I am thinking you are going to have a great triumph as well, and you will have accomplished an even tougher feat than the rest of us.

To all of us – if this was easy, everyone would do it – and we wouldn’t be as interested.  Our determination will be the added factor to our training that will get us to the finish line J

To offset all the normal "did I train enough?" thoughts...

Remember the old adage: it is far better to be 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained.

There is a cumulative effect of all the training you've done, plus you'll be racing on fresh legs from the taper, not the tired beat up ones you've had for your long rides/runs. So, it's ok if they seem a little short to you.

I couldn't agree with you more Runnerx! For IMCdA, I was always fighting injuries, or struggling because I was overtraining, this year I have a much diferent approach. Not to say that for about 2 weeks I was training and racing hard! I did Eagleman and then left on the following Thursday and went to Placid for 4 days of intense training. But I took it easy for a week following those two weeks and now am feeling good. I will dial it way down beginning Sunday, Let the Taper Begin...

blackchr05 - 2011-07-01 9:08 AM Tarhelathlete -

I never thought I'd be saying this, but my biggest question mark for the race right now is going to be my swim: I have not enjoyed swimming nearly as much as biking and running during all this training so went w/the ''If I'm not enjoying it, don't do it as much approach"  Now that race day is close enough, I can suck it up and just swim.

I think you and i have two of the same issues my friend.  I wake up thinking of IM.  My fiance is talking to me about important stuff and i`m thinking - how will that fit into my training schedule?  Someone books a meeting at work for 1pm - i`m like - as5hole - i planned to swim at lunch (i always end up running even though i planned to swim).

Have you done any long swims?  I am at 25 swims in 30 weeks so less than one a week (one week i did 4 cause i felt bad) but most of them have been 40-45mins at my own pace (no drills etc - yes, i know that you are meant to do them).  The swim is 10% of the race so the way i see it - its a necessary evil to complete to do an IM.  Spoke to a few mates about swimming and we come to the same conclusion.  You can work hard and reduce you time from 1.15-1.10 or 1.10-1.05.  Do the same work on the bike or run and its more like 10 or 15mins.  Swimming, however, does not tend to bugger up your joints.  I got round the Placid 2.4m twice over the w/e, just by going at a chilled pace.

Figured its a good time to get a couple 45-60min swims in over taper period.  Endurance is built up from B+R.  A little swim muscle can develop in the next couple weeks....

Come race day - its nice to "come from behind" - TWSS!!!!

I've gotten a FEW longer swims in.  I did one 4,000 a while back to cram for a 1.2 mile swim in a half iron aquabike.  I think I swam 8x in 8 days getting ready for that because my swim training was horribbble leading up to it.  Then I took a bunch of time off (maybe one day a week) now I'm back into cram mode.  Last couple weeks I've been pretty consistent with ~3X a week and yesterday I got in my longest swim ever: 4800 yards!  Not sure if this is smart but I'm going to try to swim close to every day between now and race week.  Even if a few of them are short 1,000 - 1,500 yarders just working on form.  Biggest difference I notice when I swim consistently is my stroke becomes a lot better and I get down the pool in less strokes.  A girl I swam with last week said I looked much faster yesterday than last week and that was encouraging because I was actually trying to swim SLOWER.  Probably why I went faster haha.

Regarding improving swim versus improving bike/run and the time benefits:  I could be wrong, but I think it might be a little misleading to say that working harder on your swim only saves you time (5 maybe 10 minutes) in the race.  What about the benefits to having more energy left for the rest of the race?  I do agree with you though that endurance built up from the Run/Bike helps you build up quicker in the pool.

ckunst,

I use a personally developed mixture of Cytomax and Sustained Energy......all told, I aim for about 300 calories per hour on a  long ride but am very cautious to use electrolyte supplements and plenty of water.........

Come race day I will carry two bottles of "energy mix/IM cocktail" in my rear bottles and dilute that into my aero bottle with the water I pick up on course......I use my frame bottle holder for "excess" water that I save for various purposes between aid stations (drinking, drenching my head at hot races or "rinsing" after nature calls)....I also pick up a half banana now and again and carry just a few gels for variety....

Hope this helps,

Paul

I'd like to keep the same all day, but my sweaty wet tri shorts were getting pretty mean after about mile 75 yesterday...

2XU Endurance Top for Bike/Run (nice and cool, good compression, dries fast).  De Soto 400M bike shorts, then some basic Nike Running shorts with compression lining.

Either that or a superman outfit with cape.
