Mett - 2010-01-11 2:23 PM What is the brand name of some of the trainers? I can tell ya right now that my wife would murder me if I spent 1500 dollars on one. It would be awesome to have but even 300 is a lot for me.

I have a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and love it.  I've had it for a year and have had no issues at all.  It fluid so it's quiet.  Can't remember how much I paid.  I am thinking around $300.

Sorry, I can't touch the running question.  I leave those questions (and most other questions) to those who know better than I do.

Great pics Tracy.  We know she has great genes.

For you bike guru's out there, I just posted a video in my albums.  I was hoping to get a little feedback.  It's not great quality (it's from my phone, I forgot the vid. camera at work), but should do.  The only thing, is when I uploaded it to BT, it put everything in fast forward and added some loud noises in there.  Not too sure about those.  It's pretty funny actually.  It looks like my avg cadence is around 200!  Thanks for the help.

Awesome pics of the girls Tracy.  Really looks like she love what she is doing.

I am going to be looking for a trainer in a month or so...hopefully they will be more available and lower $$$ at seasons end.  I also gives me time to save up some  money from the job I am supposed to start in a week or so.  Will be looking for a KK or similar QUALITY fluid trainer.  If anyone here is going to be getting rid of one please keep me in mind.

Looks like everyone had a great weekend training and healing up.

Speaking of healing....had a conversation with a Used-to-be-an-Athlete this weekend and he stated that he quit playing/competing/training because nagging injuries were, to him, not worth the benefit he received from the sport.  When I asked what type of injuries he was talking about they were very minor compared to what most Triathletes have.....pulled muscles, sore back, twisted ankle etc.  So he up and decides to be a couch potato instead. (I don't think this was the real reason but he was adamant.

Even though I am not as injury prone as even the average triathlete, I will say that the injuries would have to be chronic and really bad to get me to walk away from this lifestyle.  The benefits to me, especially at my age, FAR outweigh the potential for injury.

For those of you that have been bitten by the injury bug...What say you?  Have there been times you thought of walking away or changing sports because of chronic pain or injuries?

I am back in to it to be fit and to be competitive again. I have always played sports and I have had some pretty serious injuries across my career thus far. I am 29 so keep that in mind. I chose the triathlon because I feel that doing a full IM would be an accomplishment and it is something that I can strive for and feel truly successful when I finish it. I would say Kona but w/ my size and previous injuries it may be a far stretch. So far I have broken my collar bone and had it plastered together w/ titanium across my shoulder (fully recovered), I have stretched and torn several ligaments in my knees, broke fingers and recently I was hit by a car while training for my first tri. As soon as I got the go ahead I am back here. To me it sounds like an excuse not to train and if that is what it takes to justify being a couch potato then there is nothing we can do. I love the rush personally.

Steve, this is my second full season of doing tri's and I have had a few small issues and one larger one.  The small ones have been recurring ITBS, shoulder pain, and some foot pain.  The larger issue was achilles tendinitis that I dealt with late last winter - early spring.  It took me away from running for a couple months.

Overall, I have been active my entire life - from my first baseball days, to high school and college football, to men's league ice hockey.  It just seems the older I got, the less was offered and the less time I had.  With tri's, I can train whenever I want, at my own pace, as much as I want.  Besides, my ultimate, but one time unthinkable goal, when I first got into tri's was an Ironman.  I will accomplish that goal this August.  Injury risk is just a part I have accepted.  Besides, with my other option being ice hockey, I think my odds of an injury have dropped considerably since making the switch.

There is no way I will give up this sport.  Besides, I don't know if I could if I tried.  It is way too addictive!

I am buying my first road bike, I cant afford a tri bike. How important are the tri specific aero bars in the beginning?

At the beginning, aerobars are not important at all especilly for the shorter distance races.  Some people begin on mountain bikes.  You can add them later if you want to.  I sold some clip on Profile Design Aerobars for $40.00 on Craigslist.  I bought them new and only used them for three months.

Looking at performance the one I am talking about is 229 but I don't think we paid that much for it.  To get a better deal you might want to watch the classifieds here or check out craigs list.

Ok, Dinner is cooking.

Basing things off of the FIST fitting from Slowtwitch, that 78.98 angle needs to be much closer to 90 degrees.  It's tough to tell from the video how many spacers you have but you have 2 options, drop the front or raise the back.

I think the 138 angle is off a bit it's probably closer to 140 if I could get the video to stop in the right spot.  From what I gather that is fairly close to good with respect to seat height.  140-150 is supposed to be good.

I forgot to measure the hip angle, will do that after dinner, that will tell you how high or low the aero bars are relative to the saddle.

Also, by no means am I an expert at this.  I read up on it and it's fun to figure out.

Yeah it's kind of tough, not quite a straight on shot and the darker baggy shirt make it tough to make sure I hit it right.

BTW, boring background, not much to make fun of.

Yeah, sorry about the boring background.  My wife has OCD, so that room is a little limited.  There is never a single thing out of place in that room.  My bonus room over the garage is full of my stuff (fridge, hockey stick chair, mountain bike, my now inside out tom brady game jersey, hockey equipment).  Unfortunately it's real dark and doesn't have a dvr or 60" tv.  I'll try to take another video this week with a contrasting top and more of a 90 degree angle.

WOW! Lots of Great pictures!  Sorry I wasn't able to get my video or pictures made yet, but I did make a couple adjustments.  I am still way extended with my seat moved all the way forward.  I am probably going to need BOTH a shorter stem and the Fast Forward Seat Post...wife isn't gonna be happy....more money to spend.

On another note, I started my Base training yesterday with a 2 hr trainer ride, and today my legs are fried.  I swam for an hour this morning using my new book....Swim Workouts in a Binder....then I ran this afternoon for an hour.  My legs didnt want to run after yesterdays trainer ride.

Question about rest days.  Do I need a FULL rest day?  I have been on every day for the last 15, but occassionally, lighten the load for active recovery.  How important is a full blown rest day? My plan for my base phase is to have active recovery days on fridays, then during my REST week, actually take a day or two completely off.  Tell me what you think...I really dont want to take a full day off....it makes me feel lazy.

Thanks for your help...AGAIN

Very important.  You need give your body and mind a chance to rest and recharge.  Looking at the comments in your log today, I'd say you could use a day off.  I take one day off a week, usually Mondays.    I understand how you might feel lazy but rest is an esssential part of any training program.  No need to feel lazy at all.

one more thing.   night before rest day is drink night.. also an essential part of the training week!

Well, I grabbed the video and downloaded it so I could slow it down and enlarge it to try to get some better angles. It's a bit tough to tell exactly because of the dark background, but I come up with angles very similar to Tony.

My first impression is that your torso is very open, so you may not be getting all of the aero benefits that you can.

When I take a look at your setup prior to you getting on, it doesn't appear like you have much drop between the saddle and the aero bars. As a result, I measure approximately 76 degrees between your elbows, shoulder, and greater trochanter. As mentioned previously, I like to see close to a 90 degree angle here.

Typically, you could either raise your saddle or drop your bar height. However, the angle between your ankle, knee, and trochanter looks to be about 140, maybe a bit more (I had a hard time getting a good frame with your crank arm in line with the seat tube), so I wouldn't change that very much. Your hips don't appear to rock at all, which is good, meaning your seat height is probably very close to what you want.

Shifting your seat forward could also help. Right now, I measure 75 degrees from the middle of the saddle through the bottom bracket. This is perhaps a little on the low end of the "typical" range. If you push your seat forward a bit, that does a couple of things. First, to keep the same distance from the saddle to the crank, you'll need to raise your seat slightly. Second, you'll be able to open up your hip angle a bit more which is better to generate power.

I also notice that you've got the setback Transition post. If you're unable to slide the seat forward any more (and it won't take much, try moving the seat forward a cm or so and raising it the same amount), you might have to get the vertical seatpost... just a thought.

The last option is to lower your front end, typically by removing some of those spacers. This is really more a matter of flexibility than anything. If you slide your seat forward and up, you're rotating yourself about the bottom bracket, and you might find that you can remove a spacer without too much discomfort.

With all of this being said, I'm assuming that you've been professionally fit on this bike, yes? And that whoever fit you took into account your flexibility and race preference (the aero/comfort ratio is a wee bit different for sprints vs. long course)? If that's the case, then I would make very MINOR tweaks to this position as I listed above, and try to increase your flexibility and core strength to allow you to get into an event more aero position.

EDIT: Forgot to add: cool program, Tony... much better than my old method of drawing lines and doing math...

Question about rest days.  Do I need a FULL rest day?  I have been on every day for the last 15, but occassionally, lighten the load for active recovery.  How important is a full blown rest day? I'd agree with Birdy: rest days are rest days. Rest. Active recovery days are good: light runs, easy spins, maybe some swim drills or a few mindless laps. This keeps you active, restores glycogen, repairs muscle tissue, and allows you to flush out metabolic waste. It's an important part of the training process.

Every once in a while, though, a complete rest day is a good way to recharge mentally and physically. Yes, it's tough to imagine that you're increasing your fitness by not doing anything, but what you're really doing is allowing yourself to push harder on those days when you are training. No one can train at 100% or even 90% day after day. Eventually you get injured, and if you think not doing something for one day doesn't feel helpful, just ask Suzy about jonesing for a run... Or you plateau because your body just can't go any more. Developing the aerobic engine is about stimulating and adapting, and recovery is a big part of that adaptation.

If it were me and I'd been getting good workouts in for two weeks in a row, I think I'd take a full recovery day.
