How many here are doing their very first ironman at LP this year?? I've always thought the most exciting ironman is your very first and was just curious about this group as I suspect a lot are doing their first here.
52 year old first timer here. Freaking right out. Here's how bad it is. A friend of mine's Mother passed away. I'm doing the right thing and going to the funeral home tonight... but... I can't help thinking about the missed workout. Sick. At least I know I'm sick, that might be a good sign.

mrbbrad - 2011-07-06 8:46 PM Dream Chaser - 2011-07-06 6:25 PM Who else is really tired right now? . No matter when I read this the answer will be the same; me!
ETA = @Fred - This is my first 140.6. Maybe my last. The training takes a lot of time!
I am so fatigued it aint funny. I am taking the day off today, not in the plan but my legs need some rest. Since Tuesday I have felt my right hamstring just above my knee. That scared me and made my decision to rest it today. It took about 3-4 miles in yesterdays run before it stretched out and I couldn't feel it. I feel like if I get a good days rest I can have a solid weekend (Fri-Sunday) of quality training and then taper. I am also fighting a sinus infection for which I am fixing to see a doc to get something to knock this thing out NOW.
Fred this will be my first IM but it is actually my second to train for. I trained for IMLou last year and had a bike wreck 6 weeks out that required shoulder surgery. So I never got to feel this peak phase. That was another thing that made me train wiser this year, I realized alot of the battle is making to the starting line.

Regular 118 Grand Rapids | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I wore a DeSoto Forza one-piece tri suit for my HIM and loved it. But for IMLP I will be wearing a two-piece, which will allow me to make restroom stops if needed and give me a bigger pad for the bike. DeSoto Forza Riveria tri shorts all day and a 2xu top all day. I am thinking of finding a different tri top, the 2xu only has one back pocket and it is shallow. I did a 2.28 mile OWS last night in 1 hr and 10 minutes. A little slower than I hope to be on race day. Most of my swimming has been done in the pool and I definitely felt arm fatigue from my wetsuit. I bought a new wetsuit this year, DeSoto First Wave, and the shoulders are definitely thicker than my old Quintana Roo Superfull. Anyone else swimming in a DeSoto wetsuit and feel this sensation? |

I'm also in a DeSoto First Wave. First wetsuit so I wasn't sure what to expect. Swam with a buddy this weekend who was in an Xterra that was MUCH thinner in the arms/shoulders. I definitely had arm/shoulder fatigue when I purchased it, but DeSoto told me to go a size larger since it was most likely too small based on the fit description. That helped a LOT. Try pulling the sleeves up a bit so that you have extra material in the shoulder area and make sure that the seams line up along your palm and forearm. That is the sweet spot. No fatigue since. Best thing about it is the pullover top - NO chafing at the neck line. My buddy's Xterra left a mean welt along where the zipper starts and he is going to regret that for the next week while it heals. |

So, is Speed Skating an outdoor event? Yep. Like football, speed skating is a sport best played outdoors, preferably in the cold and snow. This link shows some good views of the oval. Of course it doesn't hurt that it includes footage Eric Heiden's "Quintuple Crown" win in the 1980 Olympics. Edited by TankBoy 2011-07-07 10:27 AM |

It's comforting to know that other's are feeling the pre-race butterflies already. I thought I was being obsessive feeling them this early! My first as well and yes, the butterflies are fluttering all over the place! My legs are super fatigued this week. I cut a 2 hour ride 20 minutes short Tuesday and I'm skipping an "optional" bike workout tonight. I want to save my legs for thsi weekend's workouts. On the plus side, I nailed a 4800 yard swim last night in 1:25. I did get my run in this morning but I'm not sure if it was leg fatigue or the darn humidity that made me go slow! At least I wasn't as slow as my long run on Sunday... cause that sucker was messy! I'm going to the athlete dinner and bought tickets for my parents and brother to come. My Dad's a motivational speaker so he loves this stuff!! |

My buddy's Xterra left a mean welt along where the zipper starts and he is going to regret that for the next week while it heals. Another First Wave user as well - I have no issues with it - do you have the regular pullover or the new "concept 5" version? If I am not mistaken the concept 5 has 5mm thick arms, which may not sound like much, but would add about 20sq cm (3") of pulling surface over the length of each arm, plus the added buoyancy. Might make a difference over the IM swim distance re: shoulder fatigue? I know I wouldn't want to swim with paddles that far, but then again a mid-size paddle offers about 100 sq. cm. (15") of pulling surface each located at the end of the lever (arm) so now that I think through it there actually probably no comparison at all between the two. Ah-hem. sorry for the digression - most likely mogulbumm is correct re: just a fit issue. Hey, cornerofdivision, if you are going to purchase something new why not try the carerra tri top? 3 good pockets on the back, and you can get one that matches the forza shorts? |

Try letting some water into the top of the suit for lubrication, and then hike the arms up starting at the wrist, up to the elbow and then you should have some extra play in the shoulders. I have a Quintana Hydrofull which is my back-up wetsuit that I use for training (my TYR Cat-5 is for race day) and yeah, even my Hyrdofull is as flexible as my TYR suit. The QR suit is like super-elastic. I did have a DeSoto and returned it for the same reason you are stating. But many people I know, even my friend who I swam with today, swears by DeSoto First Wave. I have the first wave also, I bought it b/c of the shoulder fatigue I got from my zoot zenith. I have only swam with the top on for about 5 min. due to the water temps. around here are just to warm to swim with a top on. I swam in the bibjohn alone at Kansas 70.3 and it worked great. |
