Congrats Alan! Great result. I'm still dreaming of a podium finish, but I'm trying.

I finally decided my base miles were sufficient and it was time to start really getting on it bike-wise. Went out for an interval ride on Thursday, and remembered that the weather in Colorado in April can be a wee bit unpredictable. Right at the furthermost point of my out and back, the weather decided to make me it's plaything. It went from sunny and about 55 degrees to rain, snow and wind and about 35 degrees in 5 minutes. Somehow it was raining and snowing, and yet still blowing a ton of dust with the 40+ mph winds. I looked like I had just done a mud run by the time I got home. On the plus side, I know I was working hard on the intervals.

Happy Easter To those that celebrate.

Happy Sunday To those that don't.

Check-in: Ended up doing two runs today - one to calculate LTHR and one to try to keep up with my daughter while she rides her bike on our local rail trail. I love these opportunities to hang out with the kids AND get a workout in. I needed both workouts, I plan on eating a lot at Easter dinner.

Weather Not bragging, but this is the day I've been waiting for all Winter. > 60F and Sunny. It was a bit breezy but I'll take it. Tomorrow is going to be 70F.

Hi All - Sorry to have been such a sack for the last week. I found out that my school is not hiring me back due to numbers (I work at a private school) and it's sent me into a bit of a tail spin.

I'm gonna try getting back on the horse this week.

Happy Easter!

Dave Q I am sorry to hear that - I can't imagine. Our college is financially hurting as well and a number of courses have been "consolidated" and folks have been let go. The hiring of adjuncts (like myself) is how many colleges are trying to "save money" now. - a bitter thing with me. I have decided the pittance I get paid is no longer worth it so this is my last semester. My department chair is after me to obtain my powerpoints that I created to hand over to whomever will take my place. Not happening...something called my "intellectual property."

Anyway, swam yesterday but have had a week off - sick kids, working etc. Now the oldest kid has the stomach thing. Spring will hopefully see this stuff gone! I can't wait to ride outside! The roads are drying up!!

Cheers!

So I've been toying with the idea today of maybe changing my running shoes.. Been running in a pair of Newtons, and while they are alright on my knees, I'm still having a lot of trouble with my calfs and shins. I'm considering maybe picking up a pair of Hoka's. I'm wondering if since the minimalist approach hasn't seemed to work, Maybe the opposite end of the spectrum with the Hoka's will help. My run is getting better, but if I could isolate my suffering to my cardio system, it would help a lot.

Hi Devon, I'm running in a pair of Hoka One One Stinson Lite shoes. I went to a podiatrist last year for what I thought was PF but it turned out to be something different. He is a runner and his recommendation for me was to ditch my heel-toe shoes and go for a neutral shoe. I have been playing with my stride ever since I dabbled into barefoot running and I determined that a midfoot strike was right for me, but he pointed out that I was using the wrong shoes. I also talked with him about occasional pain in the ball of the foot during long runs, so he recommended a neutral shoe with decent padding. I'm not sure you can get more padding that with the Hoka Stinson Lite. It's a little like walking in those "moon boots" that kids used to have. I have a running shoe store near me that lets you go out running with the shoes to try them out. That might be the best way to see if they work for you. I'm not sure how much of the hype I buy into, I just know that a padded neutral shoe was my goal and that's what I have.

TL; DR - Short Winded answer: I like the shoes.

Dave- I am sorry!

Devon- is there a good running shop where you live that will analyze your stride? Here is Boulder we have shops that will video you on a treadmill, analyze your stride and suggest a shoe. I always run better in what I get there vs anything I've tried to save money and picked up on my own.

I have been ramping up the run volume and loving the run coaching program I'm doing. First time over 4 miles in two years on sat and really felt like I could keep going. I'm doing 9 min run 1 min walk intervals which I've never tried before but feel great. I need to get in more biking and as I keep saying swim.

I'm traveling for work this week so may be a little challenged- but will try to get as much in as I can.

I got to go through the finish corral off the front and heard them announce my name and my time ahead of the pack. That was pretty overwhelming. When they caught me I could see how exhausted everyone was and the paced slowed right down. I stayed on the front and lead the pack through the last half of the last lap and then sprinted to third. The 2 guys ahead of me had teammates to lead them out. I was hanging their wheel and managed to blow it up in the sprint. I feel amazing right now. Third pic is of my epic solo breakaway. I channeled my inner Jens Voigt.

On Saturday I went for a good 12 mile run as peak distance before my next half-marathon (less than 3 weeks away now!). Felt good (albeit slow) most of the way however the last mile was a bit rough which reminded me that my run mileage and fit is not what it used to be compared to last year.

Fitness levels fluctuate throughout the seasons as races near or life gets in the way. When the curve is on the low side don't let it bring you down. Work through the issues and keep moving, however you can. As my motto says: "A body in motion stays in motion", keep yourself moving!

This uplifting message has been brought to you by "Racer 5" IPA, the best finish line IPA a BDAS'er can ask for!

Hey everyone,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I got to spend time with my family for Easter and am completely exhausted, but so happy I had that time. Below is a picture of all the little monsters in my family (my brothers each have 2 kids). They're a blast.

I ran on Saturday. I was struggling a bit (I think partly it was residual from my blood donation and partly because I was running 9:04 pace for 3 miles, which is my fastest yet this season), but overall it was a nice run. It was my first time using my sexy new watch (the Garmin Vivoactive smart watch).

My goal for the week is to get a workout in every day so I can get back into a groove with my training.

Oh I also found out I have a 7th wedding this year between June and November...so am feeling a bit overwhelmed about finances, and unfortunately it will likely be my triathlon stuff that suffers. I'm going to sit down tonight or tomorrow and see what changes I have to make so I can do everything I want to do.

Checking in...hope all had a great weekend.

My BY FAR longest bike ride ever Saturday....35 miles. I'm really not trying to ramp up the miles or anything but am riding with a friend training for BikeMS, so am just tagging along on long rides. I figure it's good for my endurance. Last year I focused on hard/ladder 1 hour rides, so this is uncharted territory. I must say that the bonus of burning 1350 calories is appealing, especially since we gabbed the entire way! I then ate an enormous brunch and took a two hour nap. :-)

I'm definitely glad I'm back in training mode and am feeling my muscles starting to remember a few things.

Do we have a challenge this month?

Sandi

Happy Satruday! Err..Monday! For all you freeweekend folks.

Pretty great workout today...

Got a solid 15 mile interval ride in, which is my farthest so far, and then turned it into a brick with a 2.5mile run. Felt a little flustered off the bike, but settled in alright. Not my fastest splits, but they were near my pace. Started raining about a mile into my run..but as the saying goes, "If it ain't raining, we ain't training".

Now off to a late Easter gathering with friends..

Have a great rest of the day everyone!

I know you mentioned that you're having some leg pain from running. It seems like most of your runs are at as fast a pace as you can sustain... is that right?
If so, it really explains the leg pain. If you only run one hard run per week, you'll still keep your speed but will be much less likely to hurt yourself.

Check-in: My personal trainers (daughters) drug me out to the YMCA for a swim. 800 yards later I was done. I'm just going to keep doing my workouts even on the days I don't really feel like it. I'm currently in a mojo downturn, but "Fake it till you make it" right? That's kinda the reason I do these check ins. I feel like you are all keeping me honest.

Dave Sorry to hear about the job. I hope things turn around.

Music When I was doing my runs on Saturday I didn't have any more of my podcasts left, so I decided to listen to the BDAS Spotify playlist. I was laughing as the music shifted from an emotional movie score to Rammstein. I couldn't help myself from trying to figure out which BDASer made which recommendations. If anyone is trying to entertain themselves during a workout, I strongly suggest you give it a shot. It's a very strange mixture.

Gretchen - great to hear from you and even better that the work is fruitful! Very exciting.

Juan - kite surfing - awesome! Would love to try that..,.

Dave O - great training partner!

Mike - Colorado is on my dream list of places to tour by motorcycle. The weather changes do scare me. I've seen thundersnow in June (Loveland Pass).

Dave Q - Terrible news!! I hope the job search is short.

Jenn - hope everything is settled at home now and you can get back in the swing of things.

Devon - never tried minimalist or maximalist shoes, but I am watching your story closely. I've struggled with running injuries, most often in the places you've indicated, my whole life. I've adjusted my gait and footstrike, tried being fitted for shoes... It's a constant struggle. For the past month or a little more I've been in shoes with more cushion, and been doing more slow runs (what Christina is suggesting). So far it's mostly good but I still get twinges and I have to take it easy...

Dave O - I know all about moon boots. I used to own a pair!

I see this issue arise time and again - people, people get hurt or have issues, try new shoes, etc. etc.  I don't have any real evidence to support my position, but I have a sneaking suspicion that most people simply run too hard or too fast.

I look at Jeff Galloway's run/walk.  He's talking about run/walk even at an 8:00/mile training pace, which equates to a 16:30 5k and a 2:41 marathon estimate.  That's a BQ regardless of your age group.  Anecdotes say that you can run a 2:30 on run/walk, and there's plenty of ~3:00 marathoners out there that do it.  Sub-3 is world class, no matter who you are.  The hardest part about it is checking my ego and walking when the watch beeps at me.

I also think that people don't warm up long enough.  Here's my last run:  https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/739438073  I'm doing 3min run/1min walk right now, and my runnign pace is somewhere in the 10:30 range.  Especially the first 12 minutes, and more like the first 20, my HR is considerably higher at the given exertion levels, and it jumps quicker.  After 45 minutes, my HR is barely hitting 140 in the run intervals, when it was hitting 155 in the early part of the run.

The training program I'm doing has us doing run walks and I've never felt better running.

Your graphs make me want to plug my new Garmin in look at what I'm doing. I've just been plugging the numbers in here but those graphs look cool! i need to figure out the HRM - I've never really used one but now you have me curious. I hate the feel of the chest strap so I've been eyeing the arm ones.
