Anyone know of good places to stay for family outside of town?  ANYTHING within 30 minutes of placid would work.  I'll be searching a lot today to find something so if anyone knows of a hotel or something please let me know, [email protected]

Thanks!  Can't believe this thing is right around the corner.

On the topic of wetsuits (sort of/OK not really/more about swim nutrition hydration) - I have a couple of questions for the group.

Last week I did a 3.25 mile OWS race (non-wetsuit legal). Many of the veteran racers had a gel stuck in their suit. I did not, and still wouldn't for an open race of that distance. However even though I hydrated really well the day & morning before the race, I was still pretty thirsty by the end. So, on my swim/bike brick this week, I stuck a gel flask filled with water and a gel in my wetsuit (easy with the two piece desoto). Halfway through the swim (35 minutes) I shot the gel and banged down the water, stuck both back in my wetsuit, and off I went again. It was absolutely the winning ticket for me and helped me to stay in front of my nutritional needs on the bike. So this is the question:

  1. Is this a dumb thing to do on race day?
  2. If not, can I just ditch the gel package and flask between the first and second loop or is this a no-no?
  3. I think this was answered in last year's thread, but just to make sure - there is no nutrition/hydration provided between loops, correct?

Me, personally will not need any nutrition during the swim. If you are taking in enough calories the day before and get up early and eat, start hydarating the morning of the race, you should be fine for the 2.4 mile swim. With the 2300 swimmers, you may get nothing but lake water in your mouth trying to suck down nutrition. Do not change anything you have been doing during training

Hopefully someone else didn't ask this already but...

I'm volunteering and I was wondering if anyone knew when and where registration for 2012 will be? I'm trying to work out my Monday schedule because I have a long drive home.

And my favorite line from the race packet:

OMG MOGULBUMM YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT - This is OUTRAGEOUS!
I have half a mind to write the WTC a strongly worded letter DEMANDING a better start position!

...or at least a more appropriately-named wetsuit.

I have had my eye on that new Doggy Paddle 3000 for quite some time...

It was originally $4500 now it's $3100

Rusty - you need to point out that your wesuit should absolutely indicate start position.  It just throws the entire balance out of proportion and would not look good otherwise...

And on the doggy paddle 3000 - well they already banned the Water Rover so I'm sure that ones next.  Dog discrimination I tell you...

Fred Doucette - 2011-07-06 8:19 PM Question?? How many here are doing their very first ironman at LP this year?? I've always thought the most exciting ironman is your very first and was just curious about this group as I suspect a lot are doing their first here.

My first 140.6 Fred.  A group of 8 of us are going up.  Should be exciting.  Just looking to have a good time, enjoy the day and absorb the atmosphere without having any expectations of myself.  It's been fun watching our group progress the past few months.  There's also about 15 of us booked to run the philly marathon which should be cool.

Next year I'm focusing on speed and power and a couple of 70.3s I think.  It's more "doable" from a training logistics standpoint for me and then if life permits I may make an "all in" run at glory with hopes of booking a family vacation on the big island.....got to have dreams   Aim high!

Hey Nick, I read your blog, you are in the zone man!  Good stuff!

Well thank you very much. I actually wish I could post more but work and training have won out lately. I'm looking for some big things in Placid. I know how all the advice goes so I'll take her as she comes but I'm ready for an epic day in a few weeks.

Ok, so the CDA folks had the whole honey badger thing going. Can we let them keep it?

Oh my.  I'm sorry - I didn't know the now-extinct CDA thread had an exclusive patent on using the honey badger.  My bad.

So instead.... I'm gonna skip through my marathon like crazy Iron Mike Tyson!!!  Crazy Iron Mike don't care either!!  He'll rip of the USAT Officials ear with his teeth if they tell him he can't skip!!!  Honey badger got nuthin on MIKE!! And Mike can sing:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0dSq5p4gYo
