Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Update on race attire... I found super cheap acrylic knit gloves and hat - green with white "IRISH" on the backs of the gloves and white shamrocks all over the hat. Will wear and toss (or stick in my shorts so they can be seen!) if I warm up. Problem solved. So, quick question (that annoyingly gets asked - usually by me - every year at this time): What would you wear? It's forecast for 31-33 degrees, sunny, 15 mph wind over land (not from the water). Thinking compression socks (knee length), shorts, long sleeved top, said gloves and hat. Considering adding a wind proof running vest and tights (or maybe just a trash bag on top for a couple miles). I would run nekked if allowed, so more clothes = bad, but so is a core temp in the 80's… Thoughts? Thanks! Matt |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Happy birthday Mel! We had a great race this morning. My nephew and I ran together, and I let him set the pace. He did an amazing job, super even splits (5:37, 5:38, 5:40, 5:32, 5:05). It was an out and back, we saw his mom just past the turnaround. There was one young lady that was in front of us, but he (we) passed her at just after 4km as he started to pick up the pace. He finished 10th overall in 27:44! So proud. My SIL was 16th OA. We got dressed up for St. Pattys day with hats and hair. Super fun running with them. |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) PR'd the race today, as did The Better Half! Chilly and SUPER windy, but sunny and pleasant overall. Been one heckuva "rest & test" week for me - 5 PR's (1,000 yd pool swim, 15k, 10 mile, 20k and 13.1 mile runs - OK, the last 4 were today, but I'm happy with even TWO PR's in a week). Sunny sufferfest, then the New England winter version of Poutine (chowder and a fish sandwich - race sponsored, of course) and off to find a beer (Opa Opa A-10 Warthog Double IPA) with my sweet. My kind of day... RR in a day or so. Matt |

Hadn't done half as much raining as usual especially for the swim but it went ok. I had a bit of a disaster with the start, turned up at the wrong side of the enclosure so had to push back through the crowds and missed my start... After talking with one of the officials they let me start with another wave but my time was taken form my original start time. Will post an RR soon(ish) but had a good day, very hot 33 celcius. Official time 2:49 but real time about 5 mins quicker than that due to the swim mess-up. Not my best but not my worst time! |

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by bcraht Who has an opinion on pedals? Speedplay vs Look Keo. Pros/cons? Kirsten, I use Origin-8 Pro Pulsions, which are Look Keo compatible. I like them, and now have them on my road bike and my fixie. They are easily adjustible for clipping in and out, and you are in/out with a simple push/twist. The platform is not tiny, and I have the ability to easily pedal without being clipped in if I am starting or in trouble. I've had to do so more then once, unfortunately. So, I'd go with the Look's, but that is my comfort zone and I really haven't used the Speedplays. http://www.origin8.bike/product-description/?prod_model_uid=6102

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Good job David, Kirsten and Matt on your races. Kirsten, it is really cool that you were able to run with your nephew. And finishing as well as you did, well that is simply icing on the cake. Matt, congrats on a great week of training. It seems like things are rounding into form for you. How cool that both of you went out and PR'd?!?! David, Nice job on not getting out of your zone when confronted with a few issues. Keeping it together emotionally is a great tool to have in your tool belt, and one that serves us well in all we do. Heat can be a real factor, good job on working through it. Melanie!!!!! Happy Belated Birthday!!!!!! I hope your day was awesome. |

I've used Speedplay the past few years and had Shimano SPD-SL before that, similar to Look, but not compatible with them. Like Chris said, the Look style would be easier if you don't get clipped in, but the Speedplays are 2-sided and noticeably easier to get into. I also liked how the amount of float is adjustable on the Speedplay, can be set to whatever I like in each direction on each foot. There is no tension trying to return my foot to a center point either. Not sure what Look has towards either of those aspects, but both were things I didn't like as much on the Shimano. One downside is that the release force (to unclip your foot) is fixed on Speedplay, whereas I believe it's adjustable on the others. Might be a little unnerving at first, but I got used to it quickly enough. Just have to become familiar with the motion. The Speedplay are more difficult to walk around in, but neither are very good compared to something like mountain bike shoes. I still put the shoes on in transition and walk to the bike mount in them. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by brigby1 Hmm, my experience with speedplays is opposite of yours. I could not clip in to save my life, but did not have any real issue unclipping ( when I finally got in)!! I did some after the fact research, and found out a lot of people had the same issue. I don't know/can't remember if the style of speedplays was a factor. I was told that small females often have the cant clip in problem. When I was able to get in, I did like them, but I finally stopped using them because I could not stand the clip in fight. I know use Look and have been happy with them.Originally posted by cdban66 Originally posted by bcraht Who has an opinion on pedals? Speedplay vs Look Keo. Pros/cons? Veteran 659 East Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Been so busy haven't been able to post much but I still check in and read every day. Today I am 8 weeks away from Ironman!!! The weather has been less than optimal but I've tried to remain as positive as I can. This past weekend was at least ride-able and I managed 5.5 hours of saddle time on Saturday. This Saturday will be my first century ride and it also happens to be a very very hilly route. Hopefully it goes well. I need some hot weather fast so I can get some what acclimated before May! The good news is that I should crush last years Texas 70.3 time in a few weeks. Can't wait for that race. Have a great week everyone! |

No way am I ever trying a flying mount or dismount, so I need to be able to walk/run in them! |
