TAN poll....

How serious are the TANers about Triathlon?

I don't want this to sound like all the other threads about "how much do YOU do" or "how long do YOU go".

But I'm curious about how seriously TANers take the sport.

I think I read 2goggs was doing his first HIM soon and signed up for an IM?  I have completed a couple HIM's and will most likely do an IM this fall.

BUT, I'm also thinking of hanging up the bike shoes after that and start up my next hobby (not sure what that is yet - maybe smoking and drinking and eating good food)

I think you have to define the term serious.

I do tri's in the name of my charity.  I do them to raise awareness for what I believe in and to give others hope.  I do them because I don't want anyone - especially myself - to forget what I went through, and I do them in remembrance of my donor.

Of all of those things - I am VERY serious.  Why did I pick triahlons - because I really hate to run adn so marathons seemed out and triathlons are seen as the "ultimate endurance sport" so it sends a big message.

Am I really good at them?  Not so much.  Will I get better?  Can't get much worse.  Will I continue to do them?  As long as I am physically able or until everyone that needs an organ has one to get without having to question whether they will live long enough to get it.

You decide if that is "serious" or not.  That's kind of an open ended word that can be defined in a lot of ways.

I've done a bunch of tris and have a few more scheduled for this year.  I had a bad season last year with an injury, but I'm hoping that doesn't happen this year.  Planning on my first marathon this fall and first HIM next year.

I do 'em so I can check out the tri chicks without seeming `creepy' ...

As far as if I'm serious -- I guess my thought is that to actually do an HIM or IM takes a lot of commitment. But I like to exercise. It's fun for me. I don't take it seriously. I'm not going to break any land-speed records. I do it for the fitness. Am I committed to the sport(s)? Yes. Am I going to cry if I don't break a certain time? No. I sacrifice for the sport, no doubt, but for me it's all about staying in shape. This is a great way to do it and it's fun. Expensive at times, but fun. Oh, and of course the sweet sweet pace booty.

Edit: FYI I've done probably a dozen tris (like five or six olys and five or six sprints), two marathons, two half marathons and countless 5Ks, 8Ks and 10Ks.

Yeah, I have no aspirations of being competitive. A MOP finish is fine with me. It's all about the accomplishment and the benefits I get from the training.

Plus I'm intrigued by adventure racing and could see myself using this as a stepping stone to milder adventure races. Conditioning is everything in any sport, right?

I'm addicted but like 2goggs I do it for fitness and to stay in shape.  I have fun with it and I dont really worry about my time.  I race Athena mostly and do win or place most races though.  Last year I did 3 HIM and I had signed up for a few sprints but changed them to relays so my son could get more invoved and he did the bike portion and likes that.  This year I just finished TTT will do a couple Half's before IM FL.

edited for adding IM KY in August last year :-)

Nah, It's not up to me to define it or decide whether you take it seriously or not.  It doesn't matter what I think with regards to your feelings about it.

I was just asking for some feedback, you said you take it seriously.  Fine with me.

I don't even know where I'd get started looking yet. I figure if I do that I'll probably start looking past Tris and not get as much out of it. I will say this, though: running on streets for the sake of running is losing its appeal to me.

My question was more stating that I take the reason seriously, but not the actual race.  I mean, I want to do well, but I don't svitz about it, you know.  So my question was, what are you meaning by serious - the race itself or what is behind doing the race?  I was just trying to clarify what you were asking.
