Shocked, I tells ya...and this statement... tech_geezer - 2008-12-11 10:08 AM dogfacedgremlin34 - 2008-12-11 9:45 AM CHR15 TREE - 2008-12-11 4:53 AM My friend and I (comma)... "I, at a semi-formal dance." Still terribly, terribly wrong. "Me, at a semi-formal dance." Correctomundo! Don't be afraid of the "me". It's not always incorrect, you know; in fact, more often than not, it's right. The problem is that the sentence is not complete. The reader has to fill in some words to figure out the correct part of speech to use. For example, "This is my friend and I at a semi-formal dance." is correct. Or, alternatively, "This is a picture of my friend and me at a semi-formal dance." is also correct. Usually, the simplest sentence that completes the thought should be chosen so I go with the former example as the better way. I would caption the picture, "My friend and I ..." TW Um, nope. "I" is the subject form of the pronoun, used here incorrectly as the object of the sentence. (The subject is the pronoun "this" ) You would not say "This is I..." but rather "This is me..." Me be equally shocked. |

Elite 4344![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: BT girls of 2008Bear, are you serious? "This is I" is correct. All state-of-being verbs take nominative pronouns as objects. "It is I" not "It is me." It is a common mistake in speaking because transitive verbs take the objective pronoun. As in, "He saw me." You can forget what the verb was when speaking. When you see it written out, it is impossible to miss. TW

Neither is the caption "My friend and I"This picture is from a dance my friend and I attended <-- correct My friend and I attended a dance; here is a picture <-- correct This is a picture of my friend and me at a dance <-- correct My friend and me (caption)<-- correct |

"It is I" is different than "This is I"
"This" is not a nominative pronoun, "It" is. Of course that depends on what your definition of "Is" is. |

Elite 4344![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: BT girls of 2008"Woe is you" is right. By the way, Patricia O'Connor wrote a grammar book, Woe is I . You should probably get a copy and read it. "This is I" and "It is I" are exactly the same construction and fall under the same rule. "This" happens to be both the nominative and objective case of the pronoun, but that makes no difference to the object of "is" which is or should be nominative. I am aware of lots of usage of "It's just me." and similar drifts from standard English. The grammar books still have the same rules for verb and object agreement that have been that way for several hundred years. TW |

Champion 5312![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Calgary | Subject: RE: BT girls of 2008Since we are discussing the matter, to start a sentence with the word "this" or the word "that" sometimes results in a confusion or a great waste of time on a certain thread and should be avoided at all costs. However, most of the time no confusion results. THIS practice should be avoided. See! |
