![]() asock325 - 2012-05-23 9:11 AM TankBoy - 2012-05-23 5:44 AM That does not sound too out of the ordinary to me, especially if you are not getting your rest. Remember that rest/sleep IS part of training. There are times when if it comes to skipping a workout or skipping sleep, you really should skip the workout. If you do not take the time to recover you are just wasting your time IMO. The heat will make a big difference as well - especially as we get acclimated during this time f year. Remember back when we were complaining about how cold it was??? Also, everyone is different, but are you sure your zones are right? How have you tested them, and how long has it been since you ave done so. Z2 @ 8:15 and Z4@7:30 just does not seem like much "space" to work within to me... Thanks for the advice. I chose to sleep in the morning (by sleeping in, I mean until 7 am :p) so I missed my planned a.m. workout. But I missed my swim workout yesterday as well...so I am going to try to squeeze those in after work. Problem with that, is I don't get home until around 8 pm; eat dinner, then get to bed. Wake up at 5 am the next morning, and start it all over again :p Hopefully I just need to get through this "slump" Talking about heat, last Saturday's long ride, it was 94 degrees. Predicted temp for this weekend is 93. YUCK! The heat really sucks it out of me. On days like that, I tell myself that I would rather have rain and 60 degrees during the IM! As far as retesting my zones, I have not. Not sure where to squeeze this in, and I dread it so much because I feel so crappy. But I know they are probably off. Any advice on which weekly workout to swap for zone testing? I am following the Fink plan. Tues/Fri have 1 hour runs with some Z4 efforts; Thursday is bike with Z4. Should I substitute these workouts? Thanks! I would squash the Zone testing altogether. You keep using the term "squeeze in". If it's that tough to get in and you're that tired - REST! It will serve you much better in the long run. If you continue to push too hard you Risk injury or Sickness and that will result in more than just a few workouts lost. If you want to get some rest and recovery without eliminating too many workouts; then ELIMINATE the Z4 work. Why? How many times do you plan on using Z4 on July 22nd? Hopefully ZERO. Z4 works your Anaerobic Engine. For an Ironman we will be (hopefully!) relying entirely on our Aerobic Engine. Z4 work is a plus. It's the fancy decoration atop the cake. But 99% of the cake itself is Z2 Aerobic Volume. The goal for Ironman training, especially your first Ironman is to safely stuff as much Aerobic SBR Volume into your body as possible. Putting hay in the barn as they say Testing is great, but chances are your zones have not changed that much. Chances are you know the difference between Zone 2 and Zone 4 by feel alone. You know what a Recovery Zone should feel lilke. Etc... If you're tired it's your body very simply telling you "I need rest." Listen to your body!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Annie I agree with Bobby and Rusty x 1000 You will benefit more by taking a recovey week-all easy z2 and resting as much as needed. Stress/Training+Rest=Improvement Without 'rest', it is an imbalanced equation and you will not see improvement.

and Jeff-I'm going with my Zipp 808 on the back and front but am bringing my 404 with me... Good to know. I think I'm going to get the 88 and run the 88/88 combo. I'll bring my 50 with me just in case...but I'm also going to bring my stock Felt wheels which are 38's. I want options just in case! Wondering what people will use in the rain....? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Currently 156 lbs and will (hopefully!) be lighter for IMLP. I will be running the same as last year: 808 front and 1080 rear, rain or shine. Staying in the aerobars I maxed out at 48mph on the fastest part of the Keene descent. There was one spot where it opens up a bit and had a good bit of crosswind, nothing terrible though. If I were in the market for a new set of all-purpose wheels I would opt for 404/808 firecrest clinchers. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Aninie - Bobby is dead-on. No need to squeeze a test in. If you do have a 5k or sprint on your schedule you could use that to estimate you LT and work your zones from there. I rarely ever test and just use my training to infer estimates. It does (to me) sound like you migh be running your Z2 at too hard of an effort, which is common IMHO. don't be afraid to slow it down, and even walk hills if you need to to keep your HR In range. Those long runs are all about time on your feet and dialing in nutrition, not mileage. Tapered and rested on race day, you will be ready to go. If you pace the bike well, you will be stunned at your Z2 pace. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() cornick - 2012-05-23 8:59 AM What does everyone plan on using for your wheel combo? I have a 50/88 setup right now and am contemplating getting an 88 for the front as well to have an 88/88. But I'm also 220lbs so getting blown around by the wind won't affect me as much as you skinny guys. This is what Zipp recommends for LP. I just bought a used Zipp 909 combo (Disc w/ 404 front), which I'm considering. I also have a set of 808 tubulars, which in reality, I'll be using at LP. I can't justify using the disc when my ultimate goal is to finish my first IM. As many may recommend, bigger is better in the rear!! I'm not so sure the front is going to provide much benefit. Stick with the 50/88 set up and save some $$. Best of luck!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't know my "one thing" I'm a fan of the Endurance Nation stuff and prior to Louisville read and watched lots of it while preparing. Now that we're in the peak phase of training I'm starting to get back in to that routine and I just watched the "Four Keys" talk on YouTube. It hit me rather hard that I don't have my "one thing" or my motivation for this IM. It was so clear to me prior to Louisville. The days when I thought about skipping a training session I just reminded myself what that "one thing" was and it usually got me out to train. I've done well in all of my races so far this year and did well enough in my half iron on Sunday that I'm confident that my training is on track...provided I'm consistent from here through peak and taper. I know that I have a valid reason for doing Lake Placid otherwise I would have quit training weeks ago but I need to figure out exactly what it is to get me through peak training.

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone for the advice about rest and recovery. This being my first ironman, I just want to make sure I have enough training behind me...so I always feel guilty missing a workout. I may back off the Z4 efforts a bit, I think that will definitely help me feel a bit more lively. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Brendon - I am from Lynchburg VA originally and I did IMLP last year. I didn't do Storming of Thunder Ridge but I did ride many parts of that route for training for Ironman St George this year and am familiar with the route as well. If you survived that ride Lake Placid will seem like a piece of cake! The elevation change is much more on Thunder Ridge... close to 9000ft I think I remember seeing reported. You'll be all set for the descent into Keene at IMLP as well after doing that descent as well. Most of the climbing around the Peaks of Otter on that ride is a significant sustained climb. The most significatnt sustained climb in IMLP is the back 10-12 miles of the loop from Wilmington back to Lake Placid and is no where near as rough as the one you did (although when you do it on the 2nd loop it might feel that way Ryan PS - I haven't been following the thread this year but I hope everyone's training is going well and building nicely! :-)
brendon8574 - 2012-05-22 9:20 PM Hello everyone. My wife and I are doing Lake Placid this year. My second Ironman, her first. We live in Delaware which is relatively flat. This past weekend we did a supported ride called Storming of Thunder Ridge in Lynchburg, VA to get some hill training. It was a serious wake up call. There was a 13 mile sustained climb (6-8% grade) that was just brutal. The descent was crazy. I now know what 41 mph on a bike feels like. Has anyone done this ride? If so, have you also done Lake Placid and how do they compare? We are doing the Fireman Camp in June so I guess I'll have my answer soon enough but kind of wanted to know what to expect. Thanks, Brendon |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TankBoy - 2012-05-23 5:54 AM Hi Jayson - since you will only put 400 miles on the tires before race day, I assume they are your race-only tires? They will have a lot of more miles in them, but on my race tubulars I usually don't even think about miles - instead I keep track of how old they are. I typically keep them on my race wheels for 2 seasons of racing and then they become spares, no matter what kind of shape they appear to be in. I will be swapping mine out this year as well and have only just begun to do research on what I want to run at LP. I have been running Zip Tangentes, but I am open to suggestions. I know there are faster tires out there.
Hey Rusty, The tires that I am using for lake placid are the tires I am riding starting now, which will probably total to 600miles comes race day. Im a little worried because the continental sprint tires are smooth tires and have no groves on them. If you compare it car tires itll probably be like the ones they use in the track. |
