Got out of work late last night, so ran on the treadmill before masters, including 4 x 1/4 mile at 10K pace, then did (most of) the masters swim afterwards.  Got the main set in, 2X: (500 on 7:30, 5 x 100 on 1:30 working the 100s).  Last hard-ish swim workout.

Tomorrow is an easy 2 hour ride with some race pace efforts, maybe a short run after.   Sunday is 6 mile run, possibly a swim.  Then full on taper

Weather obsession.  It's amazing how many times, even during a day, that the weather on a chosen date in the future can change.  Race day has gone from 71 and sunny to 61 and rain, and everything in between, several times.  Currently forecasting rain, which stresses me out.  I've got experience riding in the rain, I would just slow down.  The course doesn't have a lot of turns and isn't very technical.  Just adds stress to the day.

It will be what it's going to be.  Ideally would be overcast and 65.  Perfect conditions for me

And I know there's nothing I can do about it....

Following on the above... any advice for racing in the rain?

Decrease tire pressure at all?

I race on HED 3s which are pretty stiff.  Switch to spoked wheels?  It's not a very technical course, not a lof of turns.  There are a few fast downhills

Think I've got clothes sorted out if need be, including a Paul Liggett rain cape

I am just as obsessive about weather forecasts prior to the race.  Part of the fun, i think!   Rain would like also mess with your nutrition strategy and all that too.  It is good to work through the contingencies of how you might deal with different situations - but you really can't change it! It will all work out

Oh and it's a rest day for me.  I could do a variety of things but after being sick i am just going to carry on with the plan as it is and let go of what I missed.

Well the Spartans really sucked last night..other than one other game this year..probably the worst I have seen them play.  Still a good season going from unranked to Big Ten Regular season and tournament champs and #1 seed.

This morning I ran 9 in the pouring rain.  The rain was enticing me to stay in bed but luckily I did not let it happen.  I also swam this afternoon.  Hoping to get two good bike workouts in this weekend..hopefully Sunday I can get outside again.

Chris:  I have raced an Oly in the pouring rain and 45-50 degrees.  The water was 55 degrees.  I remember like it was yesterday ha.  I just took the corners EZ and stayed off any pavement markings/lines...never had any issues.

Chris, I use to ride and race in the rain ALL THE TIME.  I did nothing different.  Except not play on the lines.   I hear all the advise out there and well, I can't explain it but I never bothered with any other then dressing warm and never once had an issue on the bike.

Fred D - 2012-03-23 12:11 PM I did IMLP in 2008 which was by farthe rainiest day I have ever experienced in my life. I would watch out for riding on the painted lines, also do you have Carbon brakes and carbon surfaces on your race wheels? That can be a issue too. Just be smart and dress warmly. Hope you have a great race!

Thanks all!  I guess it's more of a mental game.  I've done plenty of riding in the rain, just not since 2009 or so when I got sick.  Aluminum surfaces only

One more thing......

Just wanted to point out that they have one of my favorite donuts sitting in the kitchen at work (Friday is treat day....  fantastic).  It is so lonely, sitting there with it's best chocolate sprinkles on, no one paying it any attention.

I noticed it while warming up my lentil soup.  That I ate.  Instead of the donut.  Why doesn't that feel like a win???

grrrrrrr  some days are harder than others

Fred D - 2012-03-23 3:14 PM I got a 4 hour ride in today, which is very unusual for me in March, but the weather was so awesome. My bike fitness is good early in the season even if my swim is down a bit and my run is vey far behind. Gotta take what you can get and be happy with it.

Awesome!  I have been dreaming about a 4hr ride outside!

Fred D - 2012-03-24 11:23 AM What re your weekend pans? I know Chris is racing, anyone else?

Morning. Quick check in before I head off to a deer park with the missus and friends. Today has no training on the calendar (Saturday is my rest day) and tomorrow has a 9mile run and  about a 2500m swim.

Did my first 5' maximal bike test yesterday and I now understand pain!

Chris is racing next weekend I think.

I am suppose to swim bike run today (couldn't do it yesterday cause of work) but Tina is home this weekend and none to happy about it.  She is generally really good about my training, even suggesting races for me, but every now and then she gets none to happy about it.  I think this weekend is mental cause she knows I am in taper and her mind that means I am not really doing anything.

So, the result of that is I am going birding this morning.  Note, I pretty much hate birding.  I should still manage to get a ride in today but the other two I listed as optional.  Life at home is more important then staying sharp for the race.

Had an interesting run this morning. As I was running, a slightly older guy in a suit asked me if I had a moment to talk about religion - as I was running past him! I was so surprised that the only response I could come out with was "Really?". Saw him again about an hour later on the return part of the run and I noticed the slightly puzzled look on his face of "didn't I see you about an hour ago?!".

I got a bike ride and a little swim in this morning.  Bike ride was interesting.  First I turned around the corner and darn near rode into a coyote.  Darn things, they are every where here.  Then I came across a pretty big deer.  We have deer here but I don't see them that often.  A few a year maybe.  Then I got to the big hill and started going up it and I could see yet another animal and this one was in the bike lane.  As I got closer I realized it had horns.  Gosh darn it, now what.  I stopped for a bit and tried to determine how safe I would be continuing.  The darn thing would not even move for the big trucks going by.  I felt if I crossed the road and crossed by over there I probably would have been ok but I didn't really need to continue past it, the hill was more for fun at that point, so I turned around and headed back.  Score one for the animals today.  lol
