not being to hard on myself. just wish one would turn out ok! i will admit that most people are too hard on themselves though. i'm sticking with the whole "if your race photos are good you weren't working hard enough" line. if you emptied the tank during the race, you are bound to look like crap.

nmp - 2008-07-30 12:11 PM someday i'll learn to put pics in. then i'll learn to like photos of myself!Smile anyone else not photogenic?

Sometimes. Not always, but sometimes.

Everyone thinks they are not - unless they are narcisists (that is spelled wrong).

Kind of like hearing your own voice.

Dude. I'm hot in pictures. Just not in real life.

Yeah - especially in that Peter Pan looking onesy.

Water.  Meet monitor.

HA!

At my last race, I took the timing chip off for the girl, cuz I had my own velcro strap, not a plastic bracelet. She was like "There's a real athlete!" But then later, I thought - dude, I didn't give enough or I should have been too comatose to get the strap off myself. But I did kick some personal a$$ during the race, so who knows.

nmp - 2008-07-30 11:18 AM anyone have suggestions on teaching someone to drive a manuel trans.? my nephew is totally having issues.

My suggestion is to use a beater car so as not to fry the clutch.

Other than that - i've got nothing.

don't have a beater. he's learning in my baby and it may be the death of me. but i feel it is good for him to learn a manual first.

Are there any really large parking lots nearby?  A flat one, preferably.  Go there first.

Then when teaching, they are not allowed to use the gas.  At all.  Just get them used to the feel of the clutch engaging.  Do that over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and.... well, you get the picture.  Then when they are able to engage the clutch without throwing you through the windscreen, then have them start to play with the gas and the clutch together.

I taught my wife and her cousin that way.  On a Ford Ranger.  With the most wickedly tight clutch in the world.  Engagement zone on that thing was about a centimeter.  They can drive anything with a clutch now.

that's pretty much what i've been doing! he'll get it sooner or later. just wonder if it will cost me a new clutch!

this is probably karma for the clutch i went through when my dad taught me. of course he was a mechanic and could replace a clutch on that car in a half an hour and for under 50 dollars. bet i won't get off that cheap!

Funny story -- I tried to teach MRS2Tony how to drive a manual right after I got my racing clutch. She could barely push it to the floor. The next day she woke up and said ... `My left leg is sore.'

Kind of like hearing your own voice.

Haha, I HATE HATE HATE the way I sound when I listen to a recording of myself.

It's a matter of simple audiodynamics. You sound different to yourself because of the acoustics within your own body. Just something you have to get used to.

I know - but I wish I sounded to everyone else like I do to myself. I wonder if I sound squeaky and annoying to the rest of the world, because that's what I hear.

You probably do have a squeaky, annoying voice. But that's OK. Not everybody can be perfect like Preacherman, who's voice is like angels singing.

You clearly did not see my video profile....

really really hate photos of myself! and let's not even discuss race photos!

Oh, I look terrible in most race photos. I usually only get pictures of me running, and I'm usually making a weird face.

I don't get why people have an issue with race photos - you shouldn't look good. You should be working your butt off and in some semblance of pain. Good lord, your doing an event that 90% of the population won't even try. Give yourself a little break. You shouldn't look like you just jumped off of the runway or are walking the red carpet.

Maybe you shouldn't look good, but should you look like your about to kill somebody or you're about to die.  I don't expect to look like a runway model in my race photos (or ever really), but the constant 'about to vomit' look isn't really something I want in a 5x7.

The problem is - generally - that most spectators are at the start/finish line.  At the finish line of a tri - I am going to look spent, because it's a race and if I have anything left in the tank, I am going to be pizzed at myself for the rest of the day.  Bike pictures are usually better, but it generally takes a bit of luck and a good photog to get a decent bike picture.

But it made it all worth it when you could dump the clutch at 8,000 RPMs (OK with a bit of feathering) and not risk tearing it into a million pieces.
