outexan - 2008-09-25 2:22 PM Are you kidding? I wouldnt be surprised to see some Shiner at the aide stations along the run route. This is Texas after all!

I was never a fan of Shiner Bock...but I did the LAF Ride for the Roses in Austin a few years back and in the finish area Shiner provided the beer and they had a good IPA!  And some other good varieties besides the basic Shiner Bock.

we've thought about doing a beer station, but it can't be "official".....USAT frowns upon it

You should ask the local Hash House Harriers.  They often will do them for major marathons.....

Ugh... the stress of everything finally got to me last night... I had a mild breakdown and was brought to tears. This kind of thing never happens to me, just too much going on right now I guess. Here is everything happening to me...

1. Longhorn in 8 days.
2. Tapering messing with my head
3. Supposed to close on house today, but mortgage was denied due to economy crash
4. Moving into a hotel tomorrow until we close the house
5. Business trip next week
6. Three projects at work that all need to be done by November
7. Missed a few workouts

I just want it all to be over... I cannot wait till I am on that course and in my own little zone away from it all.

Sorry for the rant... helps to get it out.

Dave...you will be fine.  I looked at my plan...and although I went way over in bike and run minutes...of the 38 hours of swimming, I think I missed about 15 total hours over the whole plan....but all I can do is trust in the training that I have done...and do my best.  Remember, have fun with it!

Don't apologize for ranting - you've got tons going on right now! Add that to the stress of taper and of course it's going to add up. Just think, the race will be great fun and we'll all be out there with you

kmill23 - 2008-09-26 12:35 PM Agh, I'm just freakin' out because I know I didn't train enough.  I trained as much as my schedule would allow . . . but I'm so not ready.  I should've put this off until next year.  Oh well, too late now! Let's do this thing!

Keith, Looking at your logs, you've got nothing to be concerned about.  Its always better to be slightly underprepared, than overprepared.

You mean slightly underTRAINED versus overTRAINED.

You always want to be PREPARED.

It doesn't matter man. Short of an Ice Age parking over Austin, this won't be wetsuit legal.

I believe USAT rules define how the water temp is supposed to be checked.  It's something like 6" below surface on the course.  I wish Keith would just check it 6' deep and stick the thermometer in the mud.  Maybe then it would be <78.

thanks for the kind words everyone. I am almost moved into storage and we are checking into our hotel tomorrow. Hopefully we won't have to be there more than 2 or 3 weeks. I have not worked out in three days, but I hope to squeeze In a run tomorrow. This next week, I should be back on schedule and get in my last few workouts. Just one more week...

no way the water will be 78 for race day....
wish I did the water temp testing. Alas, USAT does it. I'm sure I could find a spot where it was 78

FYI, longhorn will be Oct 18th in 2009. MUCH better chance of wetsuits next year.

A quick note on wetsuits...  (I'm a USAT official, and do water temp readings on a regular basis; and, no, ice cubes are NOT part of the measuring process)

There are actually two different cutoffs:

- Up to 78 degrees, wetsuits are totally OK to use

- At or above 84 degrees, no wetsuits can be worn at all

What happens between 78 and 84?  In this range, you the athlete have a choice to make.  You can choose to race with a wetsuit in this range, but you WON'T be eligible for age group or overall awards, USAT national ranking points, etc. (this would also exclude you from accepting a 70.3 championship slot).  You WILL get splits and a finisher's time, finisher's stuff, etc.  All wetsuit wearers are moved to a new wave, usually at the end of the others; you would also be moved from your regular age group and have your results listed in a separate category.

I have no idea what the current temp is for LongHorn.  Readings will be taken Friday and Saturday mornings; if it is still borderline for a cutoff temp, the official call will be on race morning.  The temperature will be available at the athlete meetings and packet pick-up.

So, IF it turns out to be somewhere between 78 and 84, it'll be your choice whether to swim with or without.  If you are thinking about wearing a wetsuit, I would recommend a test swim before race day to see if overheating might be a factor.

Only thing worse than swimming in bath water is swimming in a wetsuit in it.  If you've never overheated in a wetsuit trust me when I say the benefits in speed you might gain will catch up with you later.

Okay guys, what are your goals for Longhorn.........?

 Mine:

Have fun.

Respect the distance.

Look around transition at 2300+ cool bikes.

Learn something about triathlon

Learn something about myself

If I have to pick a time.....6ish hours... (but I'll be happy with just a finish!)
