This isn't something that I personally heard or experienced, but it kind of demotivates me about the human race. Something I recently found out about the friend who inspired me to get into this stuff:

The entire time she was training for her first triathlon, her husband basically ignored the fact that it was going on. No questions, no encouragement, nothing at all.

Her tri was a couple of hours away from where she lives. A few weeks before the race, she asked "Do you think we should drive down the morning of, or go the night before and get a hotel room?" He replies "What 'we?' It's your race."

She drove down the morning of, alone. She came home that night, and he didn't even ask how it was.

The next day, she worked up the nerve to tell him how hurt she was by his behavior. He laughed and said "You're all worked up about nothing. It's no big deal."

She's not really interested in tris anymore.

justtrichris - 2010-01-20 6:56 PM After every race I've ever run, I've come into my third grade classroom excited the next day to tell my students all about it. After telling them about the experience, and having them ask a a bunch of questions, one boy always raises his hand and asks, "Did you win?" I of course then explain how I run because I love it and do it because it makes me feel fantastic. I also talk about sportsmanship, discipline, self-esteem, the racing atmosphere, etc... This past November after a half marathon, his friend then raises his hand and asks, "Well, did you at least come in second?"

I always share my race experiences with my class as well.  After my AG win in Leamington they gave me a standing ovation.  It was probably the coolest thing ever.  Still gives me shivers to think about.

Demotivational?  Everything that goes through my head on a bad day...

My best friend in High School ran the 100 meters and I threw javelin.  We both made it to states one year.  He came back from one of his races and said, man, I just got DUSTED by some dude named Raghib Ismail.  Turns out Raghib and his older brother brother Qadry both ended up in the NFL and were known for their insane speed.

I've been talking to a company about a job for over 3 months and have had 3 good interviews. I got an e-mail today telling me they went with someone else. That was about as big a letdown if not bigger than when I had to close my store last year. Being that I don't have any other leads right now, that is about as demotivating as it can get.

At least if someone disses you at a sport you can try harder or prove them wrong.

I carry a bit of weight on me.  One time while struggling up a short 10% grade a 'buddy' said "You should get a triple it would be a lot easier for you".  I kicked his butt in the next tri at least on the bike and the swim just to make sure I beat him overall.

After I had my first cardiac setback, a 99% occluded right coronary artery that was successfully opened with a stent in 2006, my ex-cardiologist who discharged me told me that I can resume an active life of brisk walking. I was 46 at the time. That is why he is my ex-cardiologist.

In 2008, I had open heart surgery to replace my dilatated aorta and regurgitating aortic valve. My new cardiologist told me he could see no reason why I couldn't resume triathlons including a HIM on the 1-year anniversary of my surgery. That is why he is my current cardiologist.

When I was a kid, I struggled with my weight big time. Finally at just shy of 15, being in high school, puberty and probably the biggie - the 'boy factor' I decided to get serious and lose some weight (and the constant nudging, nagging and freakin' out when I'd eat another dessert that I'd hear from my mom needed to be stopped). I went to the doctor for weekly check in's, went to weight watchers, and basically dieted for the year. By mid summer, I was able to actually fit into some trendy jeans (making me feel just 'like the rest of the girls I hung with' ). I wore said jeans to a dance held at the beach at a giant pavilion where the 'older, thus cuter, and able to drive, sophomore boys' would be. At one point, every single one of my friends got asked to dance...but not me. So what did I do? I panicked and headed to the bathroom to hide out til the end of the song (figuring no one would notice I was Miss Wallflower). Upon the end of the dance, I started to make a bee line back to my friends and overheard the following conversation between a friend and one of those 'sophomore' guys:-------Friend: "So Glen, did you see Sarah? She's lost tons of weight! She lost like 30 lbs"-------Glen: "Oh, she did? Didn't notice. I guess if she lost another 30, I'd take a look at her". ------Wonder where that guy is now?

I was getting my hair done after my 2nd tri.  My hairdresser knew that I was planning on doing a tri and she asked me about it.  I was excited to tell her all about it, and she asked my time.  I told her what my time was (I actually finished under my goal), and she says "Well have you figured out why you did so poorly?"

Re: friend

Total agreement with everyone who's posted, believe me! ... and this isn't surprising behavior from him... but I don't think there's anything left that I can do about it. They've been together on and off for 11 years (7 of which I've been around for). They'd date for anywhere from a week to two years, she'd get tired of his crap and dump him for anywhere from a week to six months, then she'd get back together with him. The last time she broke up with him, I really thought it was over -- helped her move to a new place and took the crazy late-night phone calls and tried my best to keep her on her feet. Four months later she moved back in with him. A month after that, she married him. :/

During my 1st race, a 15k, while at mile 8 I see a van behind me, " We can pick you up and drive you to the finish line!" I DON'T THINK SO!! I was RUNNING That was discouraging. I averaged 13:44 mm, now I hope to do the race this year averaging sub. 8 though

I just got a comment like that From my Optimal Health teacher who questioned my eating patterns because he measured my bf at 31%. I'm 5' 1'' and 117 pounds and have visible abs, I've recently LOST aquite a bit, this was really discouraging.

Under 120lbs and running 15k races sub 8:00/mile; I think you are good to go, who cares what some goober with a pair of calipers says.

Went home to visit the folks over the weekend (I'm 28) and heard them doing it.  I had to keep telling myself over and over that it wasn't happening, but we all know the truth.
