Master 1517 Raleigh | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Not official yet, but aiming for this event for a season kicker. I'm currently in OLY/HIM "training" for Nations/ Augusta but will break away after those events for B2B training... I'm thinking at this point, it'll be a crash course in the iron distance since I'm a little behind...Any advice, I'm all ears! |

I'm signed up for the Oly. So, I'll BUMP you as I'm wondering what effect, if any, putting in "excess" mileage will have on the B2B IM. |

Or where I can read up on it? (Frequency transmission matter?) It was really problematic to have to take my Polar monitor off my bike last IM--being 112 miles dizzy & all. |

I think that Polar is proprietary. Several other companies (Sunnto, Garmin) use Ant+. |

I'm working off the IM training plan and will just tone down a couple days prior to Nation's and use that as a hard training day. Yikes, I'm not sure I would have signed up for both Nation's and Augusta, that would have been an either/or for me. |

Expert 1066 Raleigh | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I'm in the same boat. I've got White lake Oly on Sept 11, then Augusta 70.3 of Sept 26. I'm just gonna mini taper for each of those and use em as training for B2B. |

My thinking was chilling the week before the oly. |

Expert 1394 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I posted this on the HIM page yesterday and just thought I would post on the Full thread as well. Thought I would post this for everyone. You can maybe use it as you plan your race nutrition needs. I wrote Setup Events, and it seems I was not alone, asking them to change the location of the 1st aid station on the bike. So I got a response yesterday telling me that they have made changes from previous years and that they will post the new info online soon. Basically for the HIM there will now be 3 aid stations on the bike route. 1st @ 21mi just after getting off the interstate (in the past the 1st station was @30mi) 2nd @ 36mi turn around point 3rd @ ~ 46mi I personally am really happy about the change. Hope this helps out. so bike aid stations for the full will be Aid Station 1: Mile 21 - Located on Highway 421 just past the intersection with I-140. (I-140 Business Park) Will be used by Full and Half Participants. Aid Station 2: Mile 36 - Just before entrance to Moore's Creek Battle field on state right of way grassy area. Aid Station 3/Special Needs Station Mile 51 - Located at Rowan Baptist Church on Highway 210 Aid Station 4: Mile 73 - Located on Highway 41 in Harrells just past convenience store on the right(Melvin's), large pulloff paved and concrete. Aid Station 5: Mile 86.7 - Located on Highway 421, private home , with abandoned gas station which has a concrete pull off(Just South of Piney Woods Rd) Aid Station 6: Mile 101 - Located on Highway 421 just south of Blueberry Rd. A paved pull-off. We have used this site the last two years. This station and # 1 are shared with the half participants. |

Don Fink's training plan has both an Oly and HIM ... but not quite on that schedule The HIM-to-IM bridge plan is pretty good, but it's 12 weeks. Maybe make sure your volume is good now (besides, you can fake a HIM, you really can), and start on that plan 12 weeks out? |

Expert 1706 NoVA | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Looks like a good thing for many people---to move the 1st aid station!! I drove the course last year when I got down to NC and knew the 1st one was a ways in and was well prepared but some folks I guess didn't realize what 30 miles was and were outta water/drink already............. |

Maybe make sure your volume is good now (besides, you can fake a HIM, you really can), and start on that plan 12 weeks out? I'm doing a modified version of that 12 wk bridge plan. I think the key for that one is to make sure you have the background volume (8hrs or so a week is what they suggest if I remember correctly) so you can ramp up without killing yourself. The plan would start late Aug with around 12 hours or so (for about a month) and then quickly ramps up to 15 or so for about a month. It doesn't look too ridiculous but I would think that if your body is not used to the HIM-ish load that it would be quite hard to hit 12 hrs for several weeks and be "happy" there. So Scottie, you signed up yet? :-) |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Great info on the aid stations. As for me the bike training is going okay but swim training came to a halt due to vacation. Some swimming at the hotel pools but not much and now I heard that my pool back home may be closed for a second week. Ouch. They have an outdoor pool also but limited hours. Not overly concerned. Either way still checking into hotel/house arrangements. I am going with a group and I need to get them moving on this. |

Extreme Veteran 546 Oakland, Florida | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I see several are talking about doing Augusta HIM. I am leaning toward doing but the wife couldn't go. Anyone interested else thinking about traveling up by your self and interested in splitting a room. I want to do this HIM as tune up to B2B. Let me know. I see several here are already doing. We should meet prior to the race. |

DC | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread How's everyone's training? I've been meaning to start a weekly "post your totals". For those of us who need it, I figured this will keep us real & thus motivated. Don't have my totals, but here are my long work outs (please share): Swim: None (Damn! I need to get in the water). Bike: 70 mile long ride. Didn't struggle at all (Z2, some Z3) save neck pains which I expect will soon part w/more TT riding. Run: 13 mile long run (hilly route) which I do once weekly. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Hey all! I was on vacation last week but still managed a couple of bike machine rides, some swimming and about 13 miles of running. Back at this week. Anyone else having heat issues while swimming? Our indoor pool is being worked on so we have to swim outside. First time swimming in it today and it was really warm. Only did a short workout and I was melting at the end (warm water and hot sun). Hopefully indoor pool will be ready by next week. |

Champion 7595 Columbia, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I'm not doing Augusta, but I am doing the SC Half (pretty sure -- not signed up yet and $$ is an issue) and the Myrtle Beach (HalfMax) HIM. The latter is actually my 'A' race, so I'll taper a few days for that. The SC Half will just be a hard training day -- I'm doing it because I want to support the race, and I like it. I'll probably take the day before off, or just swim, but the total volume for that week won't be any different. I'll just 'front-load' it a bit. For an Oly, honestly, at this point, I wouldn't taper at all (assuming that B2B and not the Oly was my A race), apart from taking the day before off. That's just me, though. |

Member 12 Philadelphia, PA | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Finally getting around to posting to the thread...I am in for my first full. I did the B2B half last year and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the info about the aid stations. That is helpful and makes me realize I should start thinking about nutrition for the race one of these days. |

Middle Georgia | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread My first also after two half's last year. I went by All3Sports in ATL last night. Chris was a great help in selecting some race wheels. I left with some new 808's and lots of encouragement. He did B2B last year, cautioned me that the wind could tough on the out & back, but it was a great course and he thoroughly enjoyed the race. |

He did B2B last year, cautioned me that the wind could tough on the out & back, but it was a great course and he thoroughly enjoyed the race. Nice wheels! Yeah, I've also heard that wind can be a big factor there. FWIW, here's a lesson I learned last spring about wind. I did the Charleston Half (great race!) and we were riding with the wind on good roads out, and against the wind and partially on poor roads back. Going out of course felt great, and I start having dreams of a sub 2:20 bike split. Well, at the turnaround things got ugly, as I said, but I just could not let go of the idea of a very fast bike split, so I just increased the effort. Now, as it happens, unknown to me at the time, I had a fractured hip, so running was never going to be on, but I pretty much guaranteed that I'd be doing a lot of walking by pushing the bike like that. Lesson learned: "Go with the flow", even when the flow is a 20mph headwind. |

New user 3 Raleigh, nc | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Hello all! Just found this discussion. Lot's of good feedback on this thread. I am definitely looking forward to the B2B Full. This will be my second ironman (Ironman Lake Placid 2008 was my first). Looking forward to a bit flatter course. My wife has ran the B2B half and then last year the B2B Full. Both proved to be great races and I am excited that it is my turn on this course. Only concern is potential cold weather. Better than being blazing hot but I do not do cold well. |
