I got in a short bike ride with the wife and 30' of OWS before the ride. I'm limiting myself to 100yd laps along a bullheaded area with 5' of water. Chipping away at it a little at a time.

Double swim today

First tri in two years coming up Jun 21, Army Strong Triathlon, Ft Rucker Alabama, a sprint distance. Kind of excited. I guess I need to get back in OW at least once before then.

Barry, so glad to see you made it back! Wow, that's amazing about your wife. Glad everything is good now.

Dennis, you got this swimming stuff.

Drew, enjoy your vacation. It's okay to take some time off.

Thanks everyone for encouraging me to do an IM. I'm really working on improving my swim. Then we shall see.

Gabe, IM Texas is moving to April in 2017. I think I might save that one for then. How's the ITB?

Joe, I just finished reading Chrissie Wellington's book. In it she talks about having two Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections to treat her chronic hamstring tendinopathy. It's healthy blood taken from your arm that treats a damaged tendon and helps it regenerate. This is followed by 5 days of rest then a program of loading exercises to lengthen and shorten the tendon. Don't know if this is something that might work for you. Could be worth checking into. It got rid of her two year problem.

Everyone is plodding along, one foot in front of the other. Keep it up!

Jackie

Jackie- I read her book and really liked it. She has a neat history and her personality reminds me of my second daughter, so I could relate to her. Gabe got to meet her when she went to Guatemala, which is pretty cool.

Joe-I have a friend who has a doctorate in physical therapy and she is really impressed by how fast some of her patients have healed using Platelet Rich Plasma therapy. She has only had a few who have used this treatment, and she said there aren't many studies on its use for sports injuries. That makes it difficult to get insurance companies to cover it.

It's mornings like this that the challenge comes in handy. I was tired, it was raining and I have a long day ahead of me. Convinced myself to run at least 30 minutes to get my point in the challenge. Thanks team for the motivation!

Couldn't agree with you more Mitch. This is only my second month to participate in the challenge but it has got me off my butt several times already. I've caught myself coming up with excuses on why I shouldn't run this evening, or tell myself that I don't have time for a bike ride. But every time I did this group and the challenge would pop into my mind. I would think of the thread name "Consistency Equals Success" and it was instant motivation. I can't quite explain why I feel accountable to a bunch of people that I have never met but I do and I like it.

I've even quoted the name of this thread to my wife when we were discussing my training one evening. She said "We had a real busy day today why are you going on a run so late? Can't you do it tomorrow?" and my answer was " I know, I'm very tired but, Consistency Equals Success," and I went on my run.

I am very thankful for the motivation and great advise I have received from this group. Thank you very much guys and gals!

Today was definitely one of those days. A bad nights sleep (stinking work), raining and a balmy 53F for my runch. The only thing that made running outside sound appealing was at least its not the dreadmill. It would have been easy to chuck the run and eat out. Again it was the challenge and the accountability of the group that helped make the difference.
For those who have been around for a few years and stuck together, it has become a habit over the years. The times when the group hasn't been active, my training suffered in part because of a lack of accountability. It was my own fault, it is just easier if I am accountable to others.

@Jackie, thanks for asking, ITB is better and am able to run without pain while wearing my ITB strap, but without pushing it.  So good progress so far and if it continues like that, I might be able to shoot for IM Lake Tahoe :-)

Today 1hr morning drainer + 3k interval swim at lunch

So, Monday was about 45 minutes of running and another 45 minutes on the trainer, Tuesday was about an hour and a half of biking (some outside, some on the trainer), and today was a little over 30 minutes of swimming plus a 5-mile run. Ideally I'm going to get these split between mornings and afternoons, but right now they've been all in the evening due to kids and today, an actual job interview.

14k run this afternoon after work.
I also had a motivation issue before the run to the point that I actually fell asleep in the car as I got to the park after work... Last evening we had a meeting in the office and I had 2 coffees. Sure enough, not much sleep after that. After a 30 min snooze in the car I changed and went off. The first 10 min of the run were super hard and half asleep. Then things got a bit better.

I am wondering if I am hurting my cycling pace by continuously riding at my wife's pace? We ride 3 times per week and my wife rides at a average of 14MPH at 25 miles. The couple of times I've managed to get in a solo ride on the same route I averaged 19MPH. I tell myself that I getting saddle time so what could it hurt. Am I doing any damage to my own pace?

I would frame it as you are not helping yourself. Are those your only three rides a week? if you're doing your own training and then adding on those easy rides that's one thing, but if not you are certainly leaving improvement capacity on the table.

I seem to remember the concept that you can train at harder intensities for the bike than the run due to the lack of impact and its affects on your legs, muscles and connective tissue. Obvisouly you need to ensure that the level of training in cycling isn't at such high levels that it impedes follow on training the next day, etc.

I am with Mitch on this. If your only rides are the fun family rides, then you are not going to gain speed or endurance. You need to treat those rides as supplemental, and then they will help you to improve fitness, but they cannot be your primary bike workout. Or pull a trailer with 100 lbs of kids so it becomes a strength workout.
You can do a couple of things with this, either a short hard ride (45 minute to an hour) on your bike or trainer either before or after, or schedule a separate ride on your run or swim days. If you only train at 14 mph, you will not get faster nor build endurance. At those speeds you are coasting a lot. You can use those rides effectively on things like improving your pedal stroke, make sure you make complete circles and on form.
Don't make it sound like you are choosing your training over time with your wife or we are not responsible for the results Just make those rides a supplement and enjoy them.

And the Brazil World Cup finally started today with a decent win by Brazil.  Don't know about your neck of the woods, but in Guatemala and Latin America, the WC means a significant drop in our countries' productivity with a significant increase in consumption of everything that is bad for training.  Hope not to miss too many workouts and to survive this month in decent shape :-)

OK, let's talk about improving on the bike. So I ride a lot of miles and it doesn't really matter the terrain or the length of the ride, I average 14-15 MPH on my road bike. I don't have my tri-bike with me, but in a race, I can average 16 MPH. I want and need to get faster.

How specifically should I go about increasing my average speed, oh worthy fellow triathletes?
