Longest in several months!

Great job, Gretchen!!! Glad to see you're back at it!!

So far, so good, thanks for asking! I can feel the left deep hamstring getting tight on the bike so I'll probably shoot over to my PT and make sure I start off on the right foot. No repeats from last year.

Since I missed my Weds evening swim I decided to swim this morning. Turns out the pool is set up "lengthwise" in the mornings (long lanes: 50m, compared to short 25m lanes). Managed 800m and I felt the extra distance between turn a rounds. I think I will change my weekly plan to include a Friday morning swim as I think the change in lane length will help in the long run.

I love swimming LCM...it is a little different though.

Andrew, glad to have you back in and have another new dad, my daughter is 8 months as well. I think we chatted a little after I joined the group late last year. Bounce ideas off each other on how to get workouts in...ha

I did get my first brick (I guess) in today...really just because I missed my run yesterday and I knew it was a short one. I rode for 35' on the spin bike and then ran for 15' on the treadmill. It wasn't too bad for the first time ever riding and running back to back. My quads were pretty heavy getting off the bike though but were ok by the time I started running. I'm sure I will feel it tomorrow though. Hope everyone has a great weekend...I have a new brew kit I've been sitting on since Christmas (8 month old problems...ha), so hopefully I can get that started this weekend.

Eric

Hi Gretchen, I think the C25K plan for easing back into it is good. I don't know if I shared this earlier but a year and a half ago (when I disappeared from BDAS) I started the C2 10K....I was pretty sure I couldn't do tris that year but wanted a new challenge and figured it was a slow intro to running which was what I was after since I'd been off 9 months. Never got past week 4-5...something was always acting up, despite my doing "everything right". I was super frustrated. Later that year I had an epiphany....I realized I'd be happy just to get up and enjoy running 3 miles again and be able to do 5Ks. Stopped attempting the C210K and started up the C25K from Week 1 (despite being able to run much longer distances than 60/90 seconds at a shot). Got through that to run a 5K....it's worked each time. I'm actually NOT going to attempt to increase my run distance past 4 miles until I'm injury (or obvious body stress) free a year.

Glad you are back at it!!!

Hey everyone!

Welcome back, Andrew!

Mike, February 15th is so soon! I'm pretty pumped. The pool is beautiful, too, I've had the tour. 6 lanes, and there will be lessons but there's not really a recreation area for kids, so I'm looking forward to not have to battle kids for toys while I'm giving lessons. Going to miss the warm Towson pool though...

Got my MRI results back, and looks like nothing is torn! It is a Grade 1 sprain. Doc said I can go back to normal activities as tolerated, so I'm looking forward to walking again!! Will see him on Monday to figure out how long I have to wear the brace and stuff like that. I'm so relieved! Probably will still take this weekend off of anything but walking, then probably go to swim practice on Monday and try pulling to start (still hurts to bend).

Hope everyone has an amazing weekend! It's supposed to be beautiful here tomorrow! I am stuck inside studying but will open the window or go for walk breaks (because I can!) or something like that

30' min and 600 yds in the pool today. That's 3 swims this week and at least 2 bikes; just need one more run to meet my goal. To celebrate...again, the obligatory beer picture.

Nicole, so glad nothing is torn!!! Reason for celebration!!!!

2 runs down this week, going to hit the pool tonight and hopefully run #3 tomorrow. :-)

Oh, Sandi, I’ve gotten some reviews from people who really like the swim tethers that attach to the ankles. They felt it was a more natural feeling. I’ll see if I can pull some links from the ones some folks recommended.

Run this morning!! Short, kinda ugly, but done! 30’ doing 60” run/90” walk intervals. Now I'm off for a little yoga. This injury is a wake up call that I'm not as young as I once was and must do my flexibility and recovery work diligently.

60'+ spin class yesterday and then 30' on the treadmill with 6' jogging.  Getting there...

Agree on the C25K programs...I'm doing one now (over four months) and did one back in 2012 successfully.  Also agree on resetting expectations once in a while, I'm happy just running at all after the couple of years I've had.

Tapering a bit this week before Tour of Sufferlandria starts on Friday.

Did a 10k kind of race today, organised by a local Fitness/PT studio. Went quite well, stayed under 6k/min the whole time and felt great until the end.

Goals accomplished for this week of 2 of each s/b/r. I actually got 3 swims and 3 bikes in to boot! About to do some core work and depending on when I get in from work tomorrow I might try and squirrel another run in for 3 of everything. Slowly getting back in the rhythm, now to keep it going and start increasing times/distances.

Thanks! No post-race beer this time, it was 5 C/ 40 F and raining, a hot post-race hot chocolate would have been more welcome. I didn’t get that either.

Happy Monday--ugh. Ok--tolerable Monday?!?!

I've been gradually shifting my alarm 15 minutes earlier for the last two weeks in an effort to get back to getting up at 5am every morning without causing myself enormous pain. Today I'm at 5:15 and even though I woke up at 4:45 on my own, I'm really resenting that extra 15 minutes!

I did some strength training this morning because I can't find my running headlamp. I have all my other gear for running in the dark (shoe lights, reflective vest, light up dog harness), but I can't find my headlamp! So, no running in the dark for me until I do, I'm way too clumsy to try to run without light high up to see by. Strength was the Be Iron Fit off season day 1 stuff. Four combo moves that all work arms/legs/core at once, so it is pretty quick. Three sets of 10 reps. Done in 25 minutes, including time spent playing with the dog between sets. :D

Run planned for this afternoon when I get home. Fingers crossed it isn't dark by then!

Welcome back Andrew!

And don't knock running 3 days a week - I crushed a Half Marathon PR in October on nothing but 3 days/week running.

They do get easier the more often you do them.  And that's why they're so important - come race day you won't have the jelly legs feeling so much!

Heck, in 2016 when I ran 8 HM's I was only running 3 days a week. My regiment consisted of two short runs during the week and a long one on the weekends. Granted I'm a middle of the pack runner and my HM's were in the 2:00-2:15 range so it really depends on what your targets are.

Over the weekend I only managed a 6 mile run on Sunday, as I spent Saturday recovering from a flew glasses of wine too many at a friendly gathering. Need to get back on the wagon for weight loss purposes and staying on track with workouts. This morning was a quick 30' bike ride and I plan to swim tonight.
