Originally posted by riles32807 Pretty much all my runs are outdoor, my wife has a nice little gym set up in the garage (that I use way to little), my trainer gets set up on our back patio. So I have an unholy lani? A vile veranda? A torture porch? Oh, the trials of living in Florida... Gretchen, fixing everything and making you happy is probably cheaper and easier for them than fighting a lawsuit it sounds like they'd have a hard time winning.

I like torture porch.

I have a true pain cave, no windows at all.  I think the builder intended it to be a media room, but we put the man cave out in the main area of the basement so we have a 22 x 11 room that has a little bit of storage but is mostly workout room, which is awesome.  Our pain cave in our house in Baltimore City was like 7' x 10' and part of that was unusable because of utility egress and somehow we had a bike, a treadmill, and a stair master in there.

So after last nights swim, I didn't put my ankle brace back on, which has been providing compression and support, pretty much all day every day since I rolled it, just to see how things were progressing. Well, after that little experiment I am happier about my decision to defer.

I think that I could run on it, if I had to. But definitely better not to be. There were little jabs of pain just wiggling my foot around, from just walking a few hundred steps around the house. So it's another few days, maybe week of rest for me.

Mike- my pain cave is 7x14. It was a really weird space but I knocked out a wall and put in French doors so there is line of sight outside the room and it’s much less cave like. Since you can’t see outside. I wish I had a little more room and the ceiling was taller. But it works pretty good. I have a bike and elliptical and bench, medicine ball collection, stretch bands and a bosu ball.

Sounds like I am on the wrong forum, I thought this place was about triathlon, not an S&M forum...

Swim this morning with masters. Substitute coach started us with 300 kick, no fins. Ugh...how bad of a sign is it that she actually brought me my fins down to the other end of the pool so after my first 50m, I could use them?!? My kick is abysmal!! Headed off to the dr lasted this morning to see why it feels like my left knee isn’t really attached to the rest of my body lately. After work, 50’ run scheduled, but it dawns on me now as I type that I guess that is entirely dependent on what the dr says this morning.

Torture porch! I love that!

I had trouble getting out of bed this morning, so packed a gym bag for after work. Need to get in a run at least, and might do some rowing or stair climber too.

I just built a pain cave in a corner of my garage, which is really just my bike trainer with a TV to hook up Zwift to (and a shelving system below it with home brew). I also recently made this sign to hang up. My favorite part is the spacers - NJ and CA - where I grew up and where I live now.

@Jenn- Welcome!

@Gretchen- So sorry to hear about contractors/roofing issues, but glad that they are doing the right thing! I hope that all goes well at your dr. appointment today!

I am laughing so hard at the "pain cave" variations on this thread. I don't have a trainer or a room for my bike, but this made me think of a meme I saw recently about running without music (which I do, because I live in PA and there are bears near where I run. lol). The meme says "I admire people who exercise with no music- like you are putting your body in pain, while being alone with your thoughts...that's double torture".

Anyways...I ran 3 times this week, so I met the minimum goal I set for myself. I also think I figured out the reason I have been getting migraines and headaches after I run is because it is so cold outside. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I may have to set the minimum temperature for my runs at 40 degrees due to the cold (ugh! I am so ready for spring!)

Ally, that meme sounds hilarious and 100% accurate. My thoughts while running are definitely not ones I want to be alone with. Baltimore City is a different kind of dangerous, lol, but I risk it! (I actually live in a pretty safe area haha)

As for running in the cold, 100% yes, I get a headache anytime my ears get cold. I've never had a migraine before, but I think your theory is probably accurate. Even if I'm sweating profusely, I need my ears to have something keeping them warm or it's horrible.

Can't get your pic to work It's downloading as a heic file which my laptop is not loving. Any chance of a crap laptop proof version?

90’ trainer ride followed by a 25’ brick run today. Run started with some nice calf cramps, but they released before the end.

Dr says I likely have a torn meniscus in my left knee. I had an X-ray (why?!?) and he ordered some PT, both of which I think are steps really required by the insurance company before an MRI would be covered (makes no sense to me at all). Anyway, dr is pretty well on the same page as me re: training and MiTi. Understands that if the year is bad, it prolly won’t get fixed until late August. ??

Sorry to hear that Gretchen! Can you basically do your IM then get it fixed after?

That’s what I’m hoping for! Doc seems relatively resigned to the fact that unless my leg actually falls off, I’m not having surgery before the race (and even if it does fall off before hand, depending on how close to the race it is, I might just put it in ice and hope for the best!)

Positive attitude! Love it! Maybe get it a little truck that your missus can pull with your leg in next to you?!?

Lots of people have torn miniscuses (minisci??) without even knowing it.  I had that diagnosis back in 2011, then they went in to fix it and it was fine so my knee surgery was a waste of time and money.  LOL

PT should help - be religious about it and it should be OK.

Agree with sappho...love the attitude.

Can I borrow some good attitude please? Training has been a write-off all week. Didn't recover from the pulled muscle so no rugby, nor any riding. Got into trouble at work for being off ill with a migraine and mental health issues (thanks...) and then had another migraine Friday evening (They appear to be hormonal ladies: off to the gp for me) and have had such bad PMT I've eaten anything with fat and sugar and meat in! Oh and I slipped and fell Thursday morning bruising my knee, and hurting both my shoulder and ankle! Boo!

Fingers crossed next week is better:

1. Try and ride to work at least once

2. If leg better, go to rugby

3. Two arm workouts and no pop till Thursday (if training) or Friday if not.

After an extremely protracted leisurely morning of reading a novel and drinking coffee, I finally managed to get out the door for my long run of the week. It is absolutely gorgeous outside today and I had such a good run. Felt like I could go forever.

Weeks goals were to
1.) call and make appt to discuss knee with dr—done, and even had the appointment!
2.) swim 2x with masters—done
3.) hit al scheduled workout from coach—done

Next weeks goals:
1.) 3x masters
2.) hit all workouts scheduled by coach
3.) engage with Noom more (down 10lbs since I started, but largely using it to log food and not following the program as much)

2200m in the pool this morning with lots of random sets (kick, pull, swim with fins, etc.). Wasn't my favorite workout, but it is done. Currently working with substitute coach for masters and she is young and pretty unsure of herself. BUT...she actually gives stroke correction suggestions, which is fantastic!
