Bripod - 2008-04-22 9:16 PM Well is it too early/too stupid to start asking about finish time predictions? At this point I'm simply hoping to make it in under the 8 hr. cutoff. I think I'll make the bike cutoff okay but having legs to run on will be up in the air considering my total mileage running in 08 so far is 30 miles... I'm workin' on it. Anybody else?

With IMWI training camp the weekend before, Hy-Vee the weekend after and IMWI in September....IMKS 70.3 will be a "train through" race....so I have no goal but to practice race strategy and fueling.

My first was disasterous as well. My only and most important advice is to get in a gear on the bike that feels comfortable and then take it up at least one ring on the back gears. Ride there for at least the first 30 and see how you feel. Believe me, you will feel great coming out of the water with all the excitement. I didn't think i was pushing to hard on the bike until about mile 50 when i started to feel it a little. The first 1/2 of the run actually went ok, but then i just couldn't go anymore.

So.....Whatever you do, if this is your first, don't go to hard on the bike or you will hate the run and it will ruin your time. My 2nd HIM i had a 15 min slower bike split, but a 40 min faster run.

First, maybe disasterous was a bit of an exaggeration.  It was my first and only HIM, and I finished, and was proud to have done so.  But, it was much slower than I had expected based on the training I had done.

My problem was mainly the run.  I was forced to walk part of the run, and even when "running" my pace was 2-3 per mile slower than I expected.  I was pushing hard, I just couldn't make my body go any faster.  Add in some nausea throughout the run, and then cramping in my calves and quads starting at about mile 10, and the run was pretty much a deathmarch.

I attribute most of my problems to pacing on the bike.  I did an OK job of pacing the first 35 miles, but the last 21 miles were quite hilly and there was quite a bit of wind.  My HR ended up well out of my planned range.  By the time I got back to T2, I was toast.

I like ballyard7's advice of finding a comfortable gear on the bike and then going one gear easier.  My plan this year will be to keep my HR in my planned range on the bike regardless of wind or hills.

Did nutrition play into any of the problems? I'm worried that I'll blow that portion of the training and end up crapping out

No, I didn't really have any issues with nutrition.  I had planned on 300 calories an hour on the bike and was able to follow the plan.  The only thing I would change is that this time I am going to stick with liquid calories only (gatorade endurance and GU) instead of solid food, and probably cut back to about 250 calories an hour.  I started using solid food on the bike on my long rides because started to find myself feeling hungry, but it left be feeling bloated during the race.

You have a few more weeks and a few more long rides to practice.  I have been expirimenting with GE since it will be on the course.  If you can tolerate it, that is one less thing to worry about.  Unless it gets really hot, I think I can also forego the e-caps and rely on the GE for electrolytes as well

If you get in the race and have trouble taking in calories, that is a pretty good indication that you are going too hard.

At this point, I am much more concerned about pacing than nutrition.

Judging on how tragically awesome I am on the bike...I'm going for 7:59:59. Hopefully the finish line will still be set up by the time I get there.

Here's my guess...

50 minute swim, although I'll probably be a bit faster than this...this is a very loose projection based on a time trial from early last year and I've been really working on form and what not the past few months. I swam .67 miles in 19:38 during a late season tri last year, so that's probably a better gauge. Who knows.

Goal will be sub-4 on the bike but realistically I'll be 4.5 hours. I will happily stake my claim at the very back of the pack here. I am so ridonkulously slow on the bike despite my best efforts and endless hours and miles of training. Throw in hills and I'm royally effed. I'm really going to be thrilled if I can average 13mph on this sucker. I know, I know...any monkey can do that. But again. I'm the slowest monkey on the block. In fact, I get to ride the "special bike" ....so please...cross all your crossables that I don't get picked up from the sag wagon or miss the cut off. I will truly be heartbroken.

I honestly have no idea how my body is going to react to a half marathon after 56 miles of hills. My half mary PR (which I set a few weeks ago) is 2:33...so I imagine I'll be right around 2:40-2:45 for the run after the previous two disciplines.

So clearly, with my given predictions, I pretty much have no wiggle room. And yes...I know I need to get some more practice on riding hills. I'm workin' on that. Even doing the 5-day enduracamp the end of may just so I can get on the ironcross. I'm sure I'll have adjustments on my bike time based on how the days in camp go.

blah.

This is really depressing (and makes me panic, even) just seeing all this laid out.

Think they'd notice if I hop on a vespa instead of my road bike?

I SO need to start using that word!

Me and you will probably be around the same paces. I'll look for ya on the bike and run. We can keep each other company.

Tom was calculating for me the other day what I'd need to average on each portion to make the cut offs. I'll try to have him post it here. It's not as bad as I thought.

That's reassuring. I'd love to see it if you get around to posting it.

Last night I did 3150 in the pool. I think I'll probably be swimming around a 2:05/100 (slightly faster with drafting). So I guess a 45ish minute swim is right on par for me...

Tom says:
If you can swim 2:00/100's, avg 13mph, and run 16 min/mile you will finish with time to spare.
Slowest paces for all to meet cuts offs...3:45/100, 14mph, and 16:00/mile

OK I'm starting to get nervous, though my friend with whom I ride said I have nothing to worry about. I talked with a guy yesterday who did IMAZ and has done several 70.3s and many, many bike races in and around Lawrence.

He: `Did you bonk on the Bellevue loop?'
Me: `No. It wasn't really that bad, but we were going really slow.'
He: `But you didn't stop or have to get off your bike?'
Me: `No.'
He: `OK, how long does it take you swim 2200 meters?'
Me: `About 45 minutes.'
He: `What's your 13.1 PR?'
Me: `It's 1:47, which is the only half-mary I've ever done.'
He: `You have nothing to worry about.'

So that made me feel better, but I know he was being complimentary. I'm seriously worried about the hills. I mean, I did about 40 miles worth of hills, some of them EXTREMELY steep, as in 15-20 percent grades, without problems, but the really steep ones were for maybe a couple miles or so. It's those long, draining, killers that are going to take their toll.

I saw earlier in this thread that someone stated the OWS for Sunday's enduracamp training day started at 9 a.m. I checked the web site and it says it actually starts at 8:00 a.m. Here's the schedule, as posted on www.enduracamps.com

Sunday, May 4

08:00-09:00 Open water swim at the beach (you gotta pay the $5 fee)
08:00-08:20 Open water swim technique/strategy clinic on the beach. Totally optional.

09:00-12:00 Run and Bike course open for training. Race Directors from Kansas 70.3 will mark the course using same markers/signs as race day, they will also be at the event as they will love to hear your feedback. Our crew will have a SAG vehicle with pumps and tires available on the course- probably should pack your gear though just in case. We will also set up an aid station back in Transition area stocked with GU and GU2O as well as water and some snacks. Transition area will be marked off and we will post a person there to watch over the gear at all times(We are in no way responsible for you gear though).

09:00-09:30 (Optional) EnduraCamps will have a short clinic on racing your best 1/2 Ironman and basic pointers for the race.

12:00-12:30 (Optional) EnduraCamps will have a short clinic on racing your best 1/2 Ironman and basic pointers for the race.

We will repeat it for people that want to get straight to the bike or that might miss it.

You should be able to get plenty of good training in that day, so come out and join in. Best part? The price.....

Free

They were fun hills. Really, he's right though, if you aren't used to hills these can smoke you. find some hills to repeat, crank up the resistance on the spin bike, whatever it takes. All in all, make your quads burn for about 3 min on and 1 off for 56 miles.

x2.

Not gonna lie to you guys. It was tough. I made mental notes that there were only about two times on the whole course where you couldn't see your next big hill. They are just one after another, after another.

I think we all decreased around 2 mph from our normal averages today. I know I did.

Really? Only 2800ft? Maybe i'm just used to hills, but that doesn't seem all that bad. And if the hills come one after another then they are either short and steep or long and not that steep. I didn't IMCali earlier this year and i think it was around 3000ft and there were only two bad hills and they rest were rollers.

Right on. When I hear 2800 I think that's totally attainable. I was thinking it was going to be 5000+.

How often did you find yourself out of the saddle? Or was it more or less, drop to granny gear and spin your buns all the way up?

And out of curiosity...what's the terrain on the run? I've heard trails and I've heard paved. Mix of both perhaps?

Nevertheless, it's quite evident that I'm going to have to travel around to ride some hills in the next six weeks.
