Member 34 Philly | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'll be flying out of Philly Thursday morning, and getting there at lunchtime. Gonna be tight with getting registered in time and then pick up my bike/gear bag, and get checked in at the condo. Racer's guide says you HAVE to be registered on Thursday by 4:00. Anyone know if there's an option to register after that time due to unforeseen travel delays? I just sent my bike, or "The Mistress" as my wife calls it, and my gear bag via TriBike Transport on Saturday. I met a woman there doing this race too, and she was stressing out to the folks at the bike shop about sending her bike too. I took the opportunity to try to help calm her concerns. "This is their only job, and if they didn't get very expensive bikes to/from these events safely, I'd imagine they'd be out of business by now, right?" During the race, regarding the facilities to "relieve" yourself while on the course, I don't recall seeing any information about porto-potties being available at the rest stops for the bike and run. Does anyone know if they will have them available? If so, how often? I will not relieve myself while riding or running, and prefer to not be arrested for doing so in public. The forecasted temps down there sounds nice considering what I've been training in up here the past couple weeks! I recommend layers, as was stated, it's easy to peel them off or put on when you need to. SWIM: It will definitely be cold out of the water for the swim start/exit. I have a full length wet suit, but since I've bumped up my training this year, I have kinda grown out of it. So I have a sleeveless suit instead, and will just wear a rash guard (surfer's shirt) underneath it to help keep my core warmer. BIKE: Then change into dry clothes for the bike. Thinking underarmour tight fit shirt under a short sleeve bike shirt with arm warmers. No gloves. Legs should be fine in bike shorts. I'll have dry feet and wear socks so no need for shoe covers. RUN: Same underarmour shirt under a tri shirt. I'll bring the arm warmers along for the evening. An open question is whether to leave the bike shorts on or change into running shorts? Anyone have any opinions on this one? TIA, and hope to see some of you there! Dave |

Dave Aid stations on the bike (every 10 miles if I remember correctly) have porta potties, On the run, every 1 mile (more or less) I changed out of my bike shorts into running shorts in T2. Just a bit more comfortable. If you're uncertain you could pack running shorts in your Bike-to-Run bag and have them if you decide you want to put them on. For me, I was real gald to get out of my bike shorts. AND here is Jasha's Weather Forecast: The cold front will blow through on Thursday/Friday/Friday night, leaving Saturday morning calm and cool with little to no surf or swells, blue skys, and generally a perfect day to swim, bike and run. You'll see. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I have been rethinking what I will wear on IM day since weather may cooler than expected. I was talking to my husband and he made it real simple. His question was how much do you think we have spent for this Ironman? I didn't really want to know the answer. He then went on to say think onion dress in layers and throw off what you no longer need and don't worry about what you throw off and it's cost as it is a small amount compared to overall IM cost. Do what you need to clothing wise to allow yourself to perform at your best. Good advice I thought. I think Friday I'll make final decision but may have two main options in my T1 and T2 bags and will have to have it be game day decision. I know for me being cold on the bike, sucks and I am miserable. |

I think Friday I'll make final decision but may have two main options in my T1 and T2 bags and will have to have it be game day decision. I know for me being cold on the bike, sucks and I am miserable. I just hate being cold, so I'm with you. I know you know this, but for new people thinking about discarding clothes, remember to drop at the aide station drop zones, so that you don't litter. Last time I just strapped extra clothes to my bike till I got to special needs and stashed them in my bag. I'll be wearing a 'throw-away' sweatshirt on top of my wetsuit before the race. I will not strip the wetsuit until I get in the changing tent. -- saving 30 seconds in a 14 hour day is not as important to me as starting the bike comfortable. I will change to dry pants in T1 And like you I'm bringing lots of layers - which to put in T1 and T2 bags will be decided on Friday morning. By then the Saturday forecast ought to be more accurate, and I'll have a feel for the temperatures there. One last item of clothing for me is a helmet liner which I wear in the winter to keep my noggin warm - makes a huge difference when it's cold. (looks a little dorky, but I'd rather look like a dork than be cold.) |

Expert 939 Tulsa | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Man is anyone else worried about getting sick? All the kids that my daughter (and I) went tricker treating with are sick today. I'm talking like puking sick. My little girl is ok so far. but she looked run down last night (eye's tired, runny nose, very snuggly) and i am scared to death that i'm going to get sick right before the race. Any suggestions to boost the immune system? I am taking a multi-vitamin. Orange juice? lots of fluid? |
