DougRob - 2009-06-05 8:01 PM I just picked up my packet for tomorrow. Except for my number and a shirt (Which is an XXL, whats up with that!) evrything else was crap. Is this normal? Not even a swim cap.

I cut my left pointer finger today making a bike rack for the truck. It is small but deep. I hope it doesn't bother me tomorrow.

Doug

Is it an OWS?  Haven't gotten a swim cap for the pool swim, usually only when there are wave starts with an OWS...  Hope your finger is better tomorrow!

Finally back to the comp.

I echo the words of everyone else in saying:

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE RACING THIS WEEKEND! KICK SOME BUTT!

I keep reading everyone posting their 400m time, when I noticed my WU is 400 continuous so I decided to keep my time.  I did it in 5:52.  I didn't kill myself, but did not take it easy either.  It was my sprint pace.  My third tri this year has a 400m pool swim, so I assume I'll be near the front of the seed times.  Hope everyone's training is going well.

I will write up a full report as soon as I get the offical split times, but here is the preliminary. I started 102 out of 201. I finished 13/201 in a time of 1:07:27. I was 2 in my age group. People kept telling me I would have won the CLysdale group, but so what? I would rather be in the age group. I passed 3 people in the swim and did not get passed. I passed a lot of people on the bike (30-40) and did not get passed. I passed 8-10 people on the run and did not get passed.

Can you tell I was thrilled not to get passed? The transition to the run was hard as I put a lot into the ride, but it was hard to get a rhythm on the run. My breathing was all over the place.

As I said I will do a complete RR later.

Hope everyone else had a great day!

Doug

P.S. The winning time was 57:30 and he was 17 years younger than me.

I put in my race report. I tried to give my overall ranks instead of just the men's ranks. One guy's data was WAY off on the bike. Nobody does an 8:18 swim and ends with a 40:08 5K run, while doing a 12 mile bike in 13:51! I would have seen that guy. he was number 179, so we would have passed me on the bike!  That is 52 mph!

Anyway, I enjoyed it! Can't wait to begin training for the next one in three weeks. Same distances. Need to do bricks and speed work. Plus I am going to try and swim 3 times a week for 2000 yds/swim.

I really appreciate the support. I was hardly nervous before hand and I give virtually all the credit to this group! I feel like I know you even though we have never met in person. That may change by 3 weeks from now!

Good job Doug!! What an awesome first race.  FWIW, I average 52 mph on the bike all the time

I "raced" the course for the Lake Padden tri with the group today.  It was a heck of a workout that's for sure.  Total time including transitions was 2:15:29 for 880 yd swim, 21 mile bike and 5.2 mile run.

On a sad note, one of my good friends in the group found out yesterday her mom has breast cancer and it is pretty severe (level 8 w/ 10 being the worst).  If you're the praying type, they could all use them right now.  Thanks.

Hi Everyone,

I just got back from my race.  When I first arrived it was about -1 degrees celsius and hailing/snowing.  Luckily it got up to about 2 degrees for my turn but boy was it cold.  The race went really well.  It was just my second tri and I got no flat tires in this one! (I got two flats in my first sprint tri).  Here is the link to my race report:

I need your opinions on my race schedule for the year.

I am registered for my next Sprint 6/28. S250 yds B12 miles R 3.1 miles
After that I definitely plan on doing the Triangle Tri on 7/12 (Sprint). S820.21 yds B15 miles   R 3.11 miles.

After that I have options:

Lake Logan International Triathlon (Olympic) 8/1 S1640.42 yds  B24.85 miles R 6.21 miles
Lake Norman YMCA Triathlon 8/23 (Sprint)  S820.21 yds B18.64 miles R 3.11 miles
Duke Liver Center Half 9/27 (1/2 Ironman) S 2112 yds   B56 miles R 13.1 miles
Pinehurst Triathlon 10/10 (Olympic) S1640.42 yds B 30 miles   R 6.21 miles

I really want to do the Pinehurst one. The Duke intimidates me as it is a Half Ironman and would prefer to work my way up to that. I feel I have to train myself up to it. I know I could do each leg individually, but together I don't know how I would fair. I also need to learn nutrition needed for longer tris.

So should I skip the Duke this year and make it an A race next year. In its place I could do either the Lake Norman or Lake Logan Tri. If I did Logan that would make 3 sprints followed by 2 Olympics. Then I would run a half marathon (maybe on 11/1).

As tempting as I find the Duke Tri, I do not want to bite off more than I can chew. While finishing is my major goal, I would prefer to tailor my training for the longer distances. Also, while I like my base I learned where I need to work on things today.

Not sure if I am talking myself out of that race, being wise, or looking for you all to confirm or refute my thoughts. So tell me what you think.

I haven't done a HIM yet, but given the strength you have in swimming, it seems a reasonable option. Most people (like me) worry most about the swim and you should have that covered easily.  I question whether your goal is just to "finish" based on some of your comments post Sprint, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt.    If you do decide to go for the HIM, the time to start training longer distance is NOW!  Join the madness with the rest of us first timers!

My swimming is my weakest of the three. I can run 13 miles. I have run 12 many times. However, I am wiped at the end and it takes me close to 2 hours. My body is drenched as I sweat profusely! Seeing how hard it was to run after the swim and the bike yesterday, I am thinking that 13.1 would be torture. I know I could finish the swim (slowly). The ride 56 miles medium speed, but following that up with the run seems daunting. I am not being disingenuous.

If I decide to go for and tailor my training for it, should I treat the intermediate events as training? BTW: I would definitely drop the Lake Norman and Lake Logan events if I tried the HIM.

Could I still do the Pinehurst Olympic if I do the HIM? How long does it take to recover from a HIM?

Doug

P.S. Looking forward to the RRs from this weekend.

Doug, I volunteered at Duke last year but you should speak with Linda, she raced it as her first half. The Duke is a tough HIM!  The weather is very hot and the course is hilly - especially the run!   The water temperature will most likely be too warm for a wetsuit so don't expect any help there.  The swim course basically is straight out into the lake and back, allowing for some choppy water and high waves if the winds is right.  The bike is probably the least of the worries.  The run is a double loop with some nasty climbs on back road gravel roads.  There is so much more to racing a HIM than just completing the distances.  You need to know what to expect from your body, nutrition, pacing, etc.  Not that you won't learn those things, but I would focus on that for next year.  Learn about how you race through your sprints and Pinehurst, then apply them to The Duke next year.  Sprints don't translate into Halves, but having done the Olympic will be a very useful tool for a half.

I would recommend staying with the sprints and then Pinehurst. I've heard great things about that race.  Look up a fellow BT'er named KEYONE (you can find her link on my log in my friends list). She is a big time racers here in Wake Co. and has raced both Duke and Pinehurst several times. Read her race reports. She also organizes OWSing groups out of Jordan. If you are interested I can give you the info on that.

Good job on the sprint yesterday.

Good job on the sprint yesterday.

Thanks for the information. That is extremely helpful! The HIM will be there next year. Maybe an IM too. I will stick with the 3 sprints and the 1-2 Olympics. It is my nature to really be prepared for something. I think my problem with doing an HIM this year and with so little time is that I have so much to learn, adjust to, and train for. I like having goals so that will be 2010. But hey, I think I may volunteer for it!

Besides, as you pointed out, that looks to be a tough course for a first time. Hopefully I am not wimping out and needing to HTFU. But SWMBO was also not keen on the HIM this year.

Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN!
Hey Doug,  I can add quite a bit to this.
I did Duke last year.  It was my third tri ever and my first HIM (I did SmileTrain and Triangle Tri prior to Duke).
Last year my goal was to just finish Duke, as I had no idea what to expect.  I had followed a BT HIM training plan, but had some "stuff" come up during training time so I did miss some of the training.
And a little disclaimer right up front...I like distance.  I have no speed, but can stay out there all day

For the race:  It is a really well done race, a nice venue and great support!  They have moved the race from early Sept to the end of Sept due to heat issues...it was a scorcher last year!  After the race I was told by a veteran at InsideOut that this is one of the toughest HIM's you will find, but I don't know.  I think the Gulf Coast HIM I did earlier this year was tougher due to conditions.   I am actually looking forward to Duke this year...I'm doing it even though it is 6 weeks before my IM.

The swim last year was a triangular shape.  Previously it had been an out and back - due to water levels.  They say it can get windy, but last year it was very smooth and non-eventful.  The wave start spread us out pretty well, so there was not alot of swimming on top of each other.  The week leading up to the event had us believing it would be wetsuit eligible (I bought  my wetsuit for it) but that morning it ended up non-wetsuit eligible.  Some folks did wear their wetsuit, I don't think they were eligible for prizes or something.   This year it will probably be wetsuit eligible since it is later in Sept.

The bike was a combination of rolling hills, a few climbs, and flats.  If you ride around this area you'll be fine.  The swim pretty much spread most folks out, so there wasn't a lot of bunching up.  There was a little traffic on the course, but not bad.  Great volunteers.  I think the key for you would be to back off on the bike a little.  The 56 miles probably would be a piece of cake for you, but you do need legs for the run.

The run is in the park, so it is not paved.  It is a two loop course with two really tough hills (so you hit each one twice).  It was hot, but there was shade....so you are not directly baking in the sun.  I walked the hills since I was afraid of what they would do to me and I really wanted to finish.  There were tons of walkers (not just on the hills)!  This year, knowing what to expect, I will run the hills.

After the race I had a two days of feeling a little stiff, but keep in mind I walked the hills and approached this as a "finish it" and not "race it".  I think you could easily do Duke, rest a few days, then turn around and do Pinehurst two weeks later with no problem.

With everything on your list you have 7 races in your first triathlon year.   To me that is alot - but others may not agree.  My opinion, if you want to "race" everything you do, then you need to cut a few.

When I read your post my first thought was - bag Duke, you can do it some other year.  The training is definitely different for a sprint than a HIM, so not a bad idea to focus on sprints and Olympics.  Then look at a HIM (or two) next year.    MY opinion, you are not going to race all the races on your list in top form...they are different and need to be treated as such.

I guess the question is....what do you want to do?  Are you looking to "taste" each distance and see what you like, really master each distance and then go from there, or pack in as many races as you can?

Sorry to end the post asking you a question when I started the post trying to help answer a question

Those are good questions. Honestly, I am not planning on doing all my races. Smile, triangle and Pinehurst are all definites. If I did Duke I would drop the Lake Norman and Lake Logan. If I drop Duke then I think I will do one of the two Lakes, but not both. That would be 5 tris my first year. 3-4 sprints and 1-2 Olympics. I still intend to run the 1/2 marthon 11/1 though.

Thanks for the info. Duke being sooo close is part of what makes it tempting.

SSMinnow - 2009-06-07 11:10 AM I'M DONE and I'M HAPPY! I think in 2:53. It was cold and windier than all get out on the bike and run, but no rain.  Did some things well and have a lot to improve upon!  My transitions suck!  Detail to follow.

Good job, looking forward to the RR!

Doug, you are a Rock Star!!!! WTG!

Trevor, your post reminded me of that Seinfeld episode where George is horrified that some woman he would have liked to impress saw him after coming out of the swimming pool!!! omg... hilarious stuff Good luck with that freezing H20!!! thank goodness you got a neoprene cap

One of the funniest Seinfelds ever!  I miss that show - the closest I have found is "Corner Gas" on CTV - its like Seinfeld on the praire in Canada!
