Total Time = 1h 07m 27s
Overall Rank = 13/201
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/11
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:40AM. Had a banana then cornflakes milk and raisins. Drove down to the race (3.5 miles away) and started setting up at about 6:15 AM. Got the end spot on my bike rack and set up my transition. Drank a 16 oz. Diet Pepsi as I do not drink coffee, ever.
Event warmup:

None really.
Swim
  • 06m 19s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Took it easy as this was my first tri and swimming is my worst event. Passed three swimmers and did not get passed. One woman would not stop at the wall despite being significantly slower than the others around her. Had to pass he in mid-lane.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim faster and train for longer perios of time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Could have got shoes on faster, everthing else went ok.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the transition more.
Bike
  • 33m 48s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Went very well. Passed 30-40 riders and did not get passed. Had a couple of issues with cars and one slow mountain biker on the hardest traffic circle. Tried to hammer thr fastest part. Figured I would empty the tank somewhat as the run was only a 5K (Hey it is my first tri)
What would you do differently?:

Use my heartrate monitor, not much else
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Was a little disorganized. Did not think out enough in advance.
What would you do differently?:

Need to improve my time getting my shoes of and my running gear on. Should have skipped the drink in transition and drank before coming in. Shoudl skip the socks on a sprint length tri.
Run
  • 24m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt ok but cadence sucked. I was not breathing well. I have had bad congestion the week leading up to this so that may have affected my breathing. Tried to do some breathing tricks which seemed to help. While my legs did not hurt, I still did not seem to have any spring. Did not get passed and passed 8-10 people. Ate a GU in thefirst 1/4 mile.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more bricks and do MORE speed work to improve my top end.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a bagel and a couple of bananas, walked around a little and took a shower and changed clothes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to do longer swims, more nricks and some running speed work.

Sounds like you had a great time and learned a lot.  Think how much more relaxed you'll be for the next one. Each transistion gets a little smoother - I promise. Great job.

Congrats on finishing (and dominating) your first tri.  As you said, now that we have a bench mark to go from it is time to get to work.
