Expert 1037 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed Holy moly, I LOVE going to pt! Never thought I'd say that, but it's like going to soccer workouts in college again. I love doing the strength workouts for the first time in years. He says he's hoping to have me back running in another month. I REALLY hope that's feasible! Next time, I'm going to try wearing my Garmin to see if it'll track the calorie burn. Trevor, GREAT 5k! It's a good feeling, isn't it? |

Bike hours and Mi are down this month, more racing, not as many 80 Mi Sunday rides. Still pretty happy with solid month, no days off. |

Congrats to all you folks who completed races. Love the bike shoes on the wrong feet trick, but I don't think I'll be trying that one. My totals for May are below and they're metric.

**warning** RANT ahead Non-Triathlon related -
Don't you HATE it when you spoke up about something for a group project, and it turned into a fiasco and some people are going at each other getting at each other's throats?? I made a mistake on sending out an email that I thought was right, but other people took it the wrong way. I tried to rectify the situation by saying it's my fault (even though it's not, and what I say was logically correct), and yet the teacher (this is for class), got involved and kind of got ticked off at the whole situation. I tried to explain my side and my logic to the teacher. Apparently it's not going through some of these people's head. I mean really - if you have a Project lead on something, and someone else says, "Report to me". Wouldn't you be confused too? That's my WHOLE point. The "someone else", should have said, "Email the results back to both of us", and that would be that. But...NOOoooo. Me and my big mouth, I just said, "I will report the results back to "A" because he's the lead" nothing else. And it snowballed from there. "B" emailed me back and said that I'm a fool and I should stop playing games. I tried to explain to him that I'm NOT playing games, but merely confused on who to report results back to, and it's just easier to report back to the lead, and if you want the results get it from him. They BOTH are working side by side anyways. If I send it to "B", then "A", will have a slight delay (I'm talking about half hour delay...really?! "B" is so concerned about the delay?!). YET - If I sent it to "B", then "A" will suffer the delay of the results. What the he-double hockey sticks, does it make a difference?!
In my opinion - you report back to your lead of a project, not the minions. I emailed to "B", and just said, "Okay, I'll email you both the results". ARGH!! ***rant over*** |

Not complaining too much since I missed nearly a full week in China and then missed swimming all last week. Happy the run mileage kept pace with where it had been and the bike mileage is significantly higher. Still have a long way to go before a HIM in 6 weeks...YIKES!

Haven't written a race report from the weekend yet, but had a great sprint with the family on Saturday. For me, I finally broke 25 min on a 5k. I think my PB was 25:30 or so stand-alone, and I ran off the bike a 24:38. Was thrilled with that. I think when I crossed the RD sid something like" #50 Trevor Cochran, hey someone get him a drink, he's foaming at the mouth." Michelle had a decent race, but she is still learning how to get settled for the swim. The girls had fun, and wow Kaitlyn(6 in August) gets what a 'race' is now. Michelle tried to keep up with her on the bike, sans training wheels now, and she couldn't. Good times. Awesome PR!! Congrats. Imagine what you will do in a stand alone 5K now!!! |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed copa2251 - 2011-05-28 11:20 PM I had a great relaxing 16k run this morning along the Noosa River, I listened to the Extra Mile Podcast - Galloway edition; made the 1hr 40mins pass quickly, made me think about whether Jeff Galloway's run-walk thing is used much by triathletes??? Seems like a great idea for IM/HIM runs. Anyone use it?
I have done the Galloway method for over a year. Right now, I am very surprised at how easily I can do 20 minutes without walking currently. It WILL take some time for me to be able to run 5-10k easily. The reason why I do it is that it teaches me to pace myself. At first I would be so happy when it was walking time. Then I realized that I've been going out a little TOO fast for a while that I get out of breath when it's walking. I changed my methods (by just reducing the pacing) and since then it's been better, and my running has changed. Also, I think another good reason why it's good, especially for those who are poor runners, or overweight, not runner's build, type of people - that it reduces injuries. As well as runners that are just coming back from injuries. Too many times I hear runners start running again after bad injuries, and they get injured again. All those injuries seem to be running related, and I freak out about those. I can tell you this, I have not gotten injured at ALL from running. I've gotten tight calves (due to dehydration), soreness, but nothing severe, such as PF, ITB, foot issues, etc etc. If I did, they were resolved easily by stretching, and foam rolling. Do what works for you. If I was doing an IM (ha, not in your lifetime, but I'll eat my words later), or an HIM, I probably will implement Galloway method. The only disadvantage is that my running pace may be around 9:50 to 10:20, but with walking, it slows down the entire pace. I'm transitioning over to not walking anymore. So far, it's good. |

I bought Jeff Galloways book when I was having recurrent injuries like ITB, shin splints etc and it helped me get over all those. I don't really do the run-walk thing anymore but I'm surprised there's not more talk about it in IM training advice, it seemed to be a great way to get through long runs without injury or too much fatigue. I think I'm going to do one extra long run per month using run-walk intervals as a way to increase my endurance. |

This includes my first 2 weeks of IM training. I have learned that I need lots of sleep, and need to make really good nutrition choices or my workouts really suffer. No ramen noodles before hard speed workouts! I only want to taste them the first time. Onwards to June!!!! |

Praying for cooler weather. I really like this race. It goes through a neighborhood that looks like it wants to be the site of the Truman Show. Really hoping to podium my AG! |

I can't believe I am about to write but my first Ultra. What he hell was I thinking. LOL Actually I am looking forward to it. Not quite sure what to expect. The good news is I ran almost all of the course at different times over the past month so I know the terrain. A good portion is in the woods. The weather has been dry so the trail should be dry. It's only 6 more miles than a marathon so how bad can that be. The bad news. It's going to be hot as hell and most of my training runs have been done in much cooler temps. Did I mention it's 6 more miles than a marathon - that could be bad. Only 6 aid stations so I've got to be more diligent about planning out nutrition. Oh and snakes - humm. Goals - finish and have fun is #1 priority. Other than that - hold a 9min a mileish pace on the flats and take it easy on the climbs and rocky/boulder sections. Definitely walk when necessary. It should be a lovely run w/ many sections right next to the Potomac River. And there is some sort of real time tracking for those who are bored on Saturday. I'll try to post a link before Sat. |
