Subject: RE: Swim motion sickness
Tobey91 - 2010-01-15 4:51 AM So I have a rather odd question to pose to the group:

Last night I got in the pool for the second time since October.  (I have been focusing on running this winter.)  I did 1500 meters at a steady pace, trying to focus on bilateral breathing and keeping my elbow high.  The workout itself felt fine.

But when I got out of the pool, I felt nauseous.  It was almost like I was seasick or motion sick.  I had intended to do a brick ride, but that neuseous feeling prevented me from doing more than about 15 minutes on the bike.  And it actually persisted for the next couple hours until I went to bed.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?  Any idea on the causes or ways to prevent/mitigate it?

Thanks

-William

Earplugs worked like a charm.   Thanks everyone.

*following Suzy's horn tooting * It's my turn
TOOT TOOT!

I went for the swim today with swim coaches...and boy did they kick . :-) All I did today was drills after drills. I've swallowed a lot of icky water and some has been pouring out of my nose a lot...but I *think* I'm starting to get the rotations idea. I realized that the entire time that I was swimming on my own, I rotated too little to my side and kept my head straight down. As the last few 25 meters, I am starting to "get it".    Correct me if I'm wrong...

Basically you keep your body rotating to side to side when you do a stroke (body parallel to the side of the pool), not just stroking over your head while your body is parallel to the floor of the pool, plus keep your elbows high. Right?

Suzy - Hope you have fun in your Bike Maintenance class! I won 3rd place for fastest tire change...and it was only my 2nd time. LOL!

Onward to my question....and what a newbie runner question!

What is considered hill repeats?!   Where I live, is all flat. However, at the park where I ran recently - and I feel so much better (and faster btw), on the dirt trail instead of road - They have a very short hill - maybe 1.5 to 2% hill grade, and only about 100 or so feet. If I go up and down that hill, is that considered hill repeats or do I need to find a longer hill?

AND - why the hill repeats? I know that sometimes when I walk up a hill my Achilles tendon tend to hurt a lot, I suspect probably no training/stretching in that area, and doing the hill repeats will stretch that a little bit making it easier to go up hills. Am I right?

Lastly - when you go up the hills do you just go on the ball of your feet, or use the entire foot to go up the hills but lean body forward?

Well I got the PT up and running today for a workout.  Unfortunately, I think that the guy I purchased it from may have been mis-informed that it was updated to be ANT+ capable, so I will have some fun working things out with him.  For now I will be using the little yellow computer as I have figured out how to get the data into PowerAgent... finally, and then import over to Sport Tracks.

The one thing I noticed was that the power it was displaying was around 5% below what the trainer equation came out to. Meaning my FTP is probably about 5% higher than I expected, Since I restarted my plan this week(despite being sick) it will take me right up to my first race of the season.  This means I will be doing both a 20 min and 5 min TT test again next week now that I have the PT.

Still coughing like crazy and still stuffed up in the sinuses a little, but I felt strong on the bike.  Two little tweaks tonight on the bike (flipped my stem over and raised it a bit, and angled the whole cockpit up a bit further, made it more comfortable on the arms/shoulders.  Thanks for that suggestion!

If you can get past the corny factor, this
video has some great information regarding hill repeats.  I fear the hill you are describing is not going to be long or steep enough. What about Red Rock?  My one caveat with hill running is it CAN be really tough on the body if you go at it with too much zeal.  I did that this summer when training for a very hilly HIM and it took quite a long time to recover from those sessions.  One other thought is you could also try a TM hill workout like the one described here.

I can echo what Suzy said about the hills wearing on the body.  I did 8 x100m repeats on Thursday...a LITTLE too aggressively   and my legs are still trashed and I have a 13 miler tomorrow that I am not looking forward to.

Build s l o w l y into hills...all aspects, grade-distance-speed-etc..

Sounds *sarcasm here* like a great video, but kind of useless for me...can't understand. Moi deaf. LOL! :-D  I probably can pick up a lot of words, but it doesn't make sense when I put them all together since I still miss information.    Kind of like if you know a few Japanese words and you go to Japan and you can pick up words that you know, but the rest is just mumble jumble...that's what it's like for me.

Red Rock is a good idea, especially in some of the hills that I know is pretty good and steep, and long. I can do that when I start putting it in my training (I think it's too early in the training to consider doing extra stuff...right now I want to make friends with my feet and the trail and try to go 3 miles without walking first!).

Thanks for the second link!

LOL, today has consisted of sleeping in until 9:00, then a big buffet breakfast, then a 2 hour nap.

At least we are heading to the pool now.

Awesome. I remember in our PK days (pre-kiddos)... Hubby and I trained for a marathon together (Napa, 1998). We'd do our long run on Sunday, then go out to a restaurant that served insanely huge portions. We'd split three entrees (we'd each order salty and then split a sweet) and clean our plates. Then we'd come home and turn on football... and take naps on the couch all afternoon long. Don't remember dinner but it was probably pizza. Any wonder that we both weigh about 15 pounds less than we did then?!

Now when I train for a marathon (or other), I start my long run early enough to get home in time to be a good family member. Make my typical breakfast (smoothie) and spend the day being a mother and wife... Even if that means being active (again) -- hikes, bike rides, soccer, trampoline double-bouncing, etc. Sleep happens only at night. And yeah, I weigh about 15 pounds less (withouth trying).

Thanks for this link Suzy.  I like the treadmill workout for hills here.  It is tough to recover from hill repeats on the road!

Hammer Head I am a total idiot!  I am really sorry.  I hope the article from Greg Mcmillan was useful.   You can also check out runner's world. They have a whole section on hill repeats. This talks about form.

Well I don't sleep late or take naps, but the whole do your own thing pretty much anytime still sticks on the weekends when you have no kids.  If we could dump our jobs it would be that way 24/7!

Well, I am at a loss for what to do as I have not figured out my PT issues communicating with my 310.  I am going to try and contact Saris tomorrow as I am not sure what else to do.  It is supposed to be updated to ANT+, but the firmware the computer had installed was not of appropriate level for ANT capabilities.  Looks like its going to be time to file a complaint and see if I can get refunded some more cash since it was advertised as having been updated.

Did 1:20 on the bike today it said z2-z3, man thats a huge power range, I hovered in the middle of the range for the most part, carrying about 210 watts average for the workout, not quite the 260 that the 20/5 min TTs indicated.  I followed it up with a recovery run... that wasnt so recovery and more around LT, but it felt awesome.  I averaged 8:30 miles over 4.1 miles, and man did it feel good to be outside!  Time to kick back and watch some football and enjoy the night.

Hey!!!

HUGE breakthrough for me today. I was able to run 2 miles WITHOUT walking today! I couldn't believe it. I fully expected to go out there and run/walk/run/walk all the while feeling my lungs exploding like I did Tuesday. Well....it didn't happen!

When I sat out for the run I remember what all of you wonderful people told me about pacing myself...that I may have started running faster than what I was used to on the TM because the TM kept pace for me. So I purposely went super slow...and in two miles was finished with my run sans walking - HR at 158 (I think I can run further if I keep HR under 160), and I actually felt like I could run further, but didn't want to injure myself.

I am so happy and excited! I was pretty bummed after last Tuesday's transition from TM to outdoors, and you all helped me through it. Mentor program is definitely working for me, and I have all of you to thank!

Trina

P.S. Also got a new road bike today. Will be posting bike porn soon.

Nice workout, it feels great to learn where your endurance zone really is. Sooner or later you will feel like you are the energizer bunny and you could just keep going and going! Cant wait to see some bike porn Tony,Yes it was used, looked to be very gently with only around 2k miles and wheel is true as they get. All in all if I have to chunk out the 100 bucks for the upgrade I wont be too disappointed, it will just cut down the deal I got to be alright from really sweet

John, I was keeping my eye out for you but with 25000+ other people around, it was crazy. Looked liked you had a great race. It was a perfect day for a run.

We did have a great day. It started rough....getting out of the house on time, traffic into downtown was backed up, etc., but we got there in time.....

I ran with my son, my daughter ran with my wife.....we started out together, then they ran ahead of us and finished about 2 minutes faster. We are really proud of them both. We walked as much as we ran, but that was fine with me. I had some great moments with my son throughout the race.....SPRINTING past the 2 mile marker since that was the farthest he had ever run, hearing him say that felt GREAT!.....turning the final corner towards the finish line and hearing him say "I never thought I could do this"....big smiles at the finish line after he sprinted most of the final .25 mile while his chest was hurting (asthma).....finding our times online this afternoon and him beating me by one second, he loved that.....great day for us.

We came back to Katy and ate breakfast at IHOP.....then to Coldstone Creamery this afternoon....totally wrecked our diets.....but, back on the program tomorrow. We plan to run the Rodeo 5K at the end of February and decided a stop at IHOP after a 5K is now a family tradition.

Two teenagers wanting to do more of these together......PRICELESS!

A 17-minute PR? HOLY COW!! Congratulations! That is awesome!!!

And dayum, but my husband pulled off a 1:50 in his first half mary. That's sort-of my PR... but really, truly my PR is a 1:49 and change. But the particular race where I did that only goes with the gun time, no chip time. Not knowing that I was 20-30 seconds back from the start... So my husband is still giving me credit for being faster, but really he crushed his race. I'm proud (but envious!) of him!

kickitinok - 2010-01-17 4:29 PM Hey!!!

Awesome!  Breakthrough days a so freakin' cool!  KEEP AT IT!!!  And post that porn!

fattyfatfat - 2010-01-17 3:52 PM Glen I'm sorry I missed you but it looks like your team had a great day.  Looking forward to hearing about it!

A great day down here in Houston.  A nice run with a little over 17 minutes off my previous best, 1:56:12. ya got me sam....for now.  RR here
John, I was keeping my eye out for you but with 25000+ other people around, it was crazy.

LOVE IT!!!  by far, the best race of the weekend.  i am so happy for you and your family glen!

we'll meet up soon enough. maybe rodeo run. apparently someone around here needs to help you find 1 second.  ;-)

IHOP rocks!
