Looking forward to hearing about it! John, I was keeping my eye out for you but with 25000+ other people around, it was crazy. Looked liked you had a great race. It was a perfect day for a run. We did have a great day. It started rough....getting out of the house on time, traffic into downtown was backed up, etc., but we got there in time..... I ran with my son, my daughter ran with my wife.....we started out together, then they ran ahead of us and finished about 2 minutes faster. We are really proud of them both. We walked as much as we ran, but that was fine with me. I had some great moments with my son throughout the race.....SPRINTING past the 2 mile marker since that was the farthest he had ever run, hearing him say that felt GREAT!.....turning the final corner towards the finish line and hearing him say "I never thought I could do this"....big smiles at the finish line after he sprinted most of the final .25 mile while his chest was hurting (asthma).....finding our times online this afternoon and him beating me by one second, he loved that.....great day for us. We came back to Katy and ate breakfast at IHOP.....then to Coldstone Creamery this afternoon....totally wrecked our diets.....but, back on the program tomorrow. We plan to run the Rodeo 5K at the end of February and decided a stop at IHOP after a 5K is now a family tradition. Two teenagers wanting to do more of these together......PRICELESS! A great day down here in Houston. A nice run with a little over 17 minutes off my previous best, 1:56:12. ya got me sam....for now. RR here. Man that is a great story right there! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kickitinok - 2010-01-17 5:29 PM Hey!!! HUGE breakthrough for me today. I was able to run 2 miles WITHOUT walking today! I couldn't believe it. I fully expected to go out there and run/walk/run/walk all the while feeling my lungs exploding like I did Tuesday. Well....it didn't happen! When I sat out for the run I remember what all of you wonderful people told me about pacing myself...that I may have started running faster than what I was used to on the TM because the TM kept pace for me. So I purposely went super slow...and in two miles was finished with my run sans walking - HR at 158 (I think I can run further if I keep HR under 160), and I actually felt like I could run further, but didn't want to injure myself. I am so happy and excited! I was pretty bummed after last Tuesday's transition from TM to outdoors, and you all helped me through it. Mentor program is definitely working for me, and I have all of you to thank! Trina P.S. Also got a new road bike today. Will be posting bike porn soon. Such an AWESOME job Trina... Very proud of you...can't wait to see the new ride. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dalessit - 2010-01-17 12:51 PM LOL, today has consisted of sleeping in until 9:00, then a big buffet breakfast, then a 2 hour nap. At least we are heading to the pool now. Is this what you people without kids do? Didn't your momma tell you it's not nice to tease? I am jealous - I miss those Sunday afternoon naps... |

I did verify that my bike computer mileage and averages for cadence, etc. were very similiar. The guy at the LBS made some comment about that those being pretty good numbers, I was just wondering if he was blowing smoke to get me to come back for another ride (sales-guy 101) or being truthful. The best way to put those numbers into perspective is to use your watts/kg ratio. For those of us on the proper side of the border who don't use the metric system (ahem, Canadians...), divide your weight in lbs by 2.2 and then divide your watts by that number. For example, I'm a scrawny 132 lbs or about 60 kgs. My functional threshold (FTP) is the watts that I can hold for an hour, which is about 235. This works out to 3.9 watts/kg. Averaging 253 watts for an hour is an excellent number! Training with wattage is a great way to realize big improvements on the bike; there are a lot of good, hard workouts to raise your FTP. I believe the big advantage to having power on the bike is when you're racing because you're able to pace yourself: once you have your target power in mind, you try not to exceed it too often, even if that means that people are blowing past you in the first 20 minutes of the race... stick to your plan and you'll often reel them back in before the end.Any help with legitimate numbers or a range or numbers that someone should be looking for with watts? 253 for an hour is very solid, great job! That would be your FTP. Mine is currently sitting around 235-240 hehe Ryan and I have basically the same FTP, (but I would have to weigh less what I was in High School to equal his weight) Mine should be about this when I do testing again this week, I feel stronger. My problem is the kg side of the equation... my watts/kg is about 1.9. My CP 5 was 312 and my CP 20 was 236 a month ago and I feel stronger on the bike since doing Jorge's workouts. Gotta work on the kg's.. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WOW! So much great news from our MG.... John--absolutely stellar. Taking 17 minutes off a half is quite an accomplishment. Glen--the fact your whole family participated is great. Sounds like the family is destined for a few more races, hopefully some where we actually get to meet up sometime. Trina--you have what it takes, patients and a positive attitude. I know great things are in store for you this Spring! Suzy |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Sunday night! Had a busy weekend as usual but GOOD NEWS! I was able to run 5 miles today without any knee pain! I actually ran 3 miles Friday but thought it was a fluke so decided to tack on a few more miles to see if it was true. Sure enough it was! The difference? I did some online reading about Chi Running (picking up the book tomorrow) so I started using some techniques and found the mid foot strike to really help out. I really have to stretch now since I am using some different leg muscles, and I know yoga is gonna feel so good tomorrow! But I am so ecstatic! I was really starting to worry I was a lost cause but there might be hope for me yet! Have a great week everyone! |

I can't seem to get the CA70.3 course to load, and would love to see what it's like. |

It has helped me tremendously not only with being pain free but allowed me to go farther with less fatigue. I can't seem to get the CA70.3 course to load, and would love to see what it's like. I would ride CA70.3-Ralphs--if you still cant get it to load try here. Otherwise, try IMAZ or IMFL. The goal of those rides is typically steady state and none are hilly. In fact, after riding IMFL on the CT, I could see doing that race! RIding hills on the CT is WAY harder than on the road and it tends to wear you out without serving any real purpose. Have fun! Edited by SSMinnow 2010-01-18 5:46 AM |

When I made the decision to start triathlon, she wanted to race too and did a 5K, a couple of 10Ks and a half marathon last year. Now, after seeing how much fun I am having, she is doing her first tri this year! In fact, she is already registered for 2 sprints (she has more races scheduled than me now that I think about it!). Very excited for her although I won't be at her first race because I have a campout scheduled with my son. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() George--what great news....your wife is in the sport you love AND you get a new bike in the process. Cool. My bike fitter was over last night and installed a set of LOOK pedals on my current road bike. He has been searching for a better way to get weight off my metatarsals. My Shimano DAs were loading them to heavily. Rode on them today and so far so good. The last two oustanding items are the wheel set and stem and then the GURU will officially be ready to build. Hoping to have my first fitting right after we get back from Mexico....stay tuned! |

I still get a bit of knee pain when on the bike for extended amounts of time or doing a really hard push or a long run still. I am going to check out some of the chi running to see if that will help any. While watching tv last night I did some stretching that really helped take some of the pain off my knee, and it appears it is actually from the lower part of my leg and not the IT band. Glad to hear your success! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awesome news! It is always fun to have your spouse enjoy the same things you do. My wife enjoys it for the fitness and is not nearly as competitive as I am, but regardless, its something we can do together and enjoy, while staying healthy on the side. You are looking for a bike at prime time, lots of 09 sale models out there I would guess, figure out what bike geometry is going to be best for you and then go from there. As stated above, get her a good fit on your bike, it will be well worth it! gdale - 2010-01-18 7:52 AM Looks like lots of good stuff going on here over the weekend...distance PRs, time PRs, family fun, pain free runs and flat fixing PRs Have some good news of my own to share...My wife has always been into fitness and has mostly been running.
