So I took y'alls advice and bumped up the 2 x 20' effort.  I thought i was going to die, it was all I could do to hold on, was watching an old episode of The Wire to try to ignore the CT clock.  2 x 20' at 270.  f&$k

Finally got in a 20min test this morning on the CompuTrainer.  Although, I didn't hit the 260W I hoped for, it came in at 257 ave. for 3.3W/kg at 170lbs.  Last test was early March with a 238 ave. for 2.9 W/kg at 180lbs.  So, improvement.  I think I've tapped out the weight side of that equation, so it's only going to get tougher.  The class instructor told me he thought my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head at about 19:20, so it sounds like I was doing it right.

Rusty, stay away from trees.  Jeez.

That's a great improvement, both in watts/kg and pure watts.  I'm scared to test again at the moment, cause I hote those things.

Chris - sounds like you got the effort right for the 2x20min this time around.  Tongue out

I had to toss all my numbers out the window with my health issues.  The problem is I can't really test, or at least I don't feel comfortable going at a 100% effort yet.  So I'm sticking with HR pacing the remainder of this season.

I guess I managed to turn my PT into an expensive bike computer   Oops.

Did you actually have any lung infarction?   Sounds like the PE diagnosis was pretty quick, so there may not be any actual damage?   Not that I am advocating balls to the wall, but my pulmonologist basically said just don't go so hard that you pass out.   But I had 6 weeks of misdiagnosis so by the time they got it right, some damage had been done.  I agree it's probably too soon for a 100% effort though

I still get some remnant SOB on occasion, but it's not because lungs are still damaged.  Docs don't really know all that's going on, but I think the lungs may never really be the same after a PE.  And maybe it's all mental.

That said, I am much much MUCH faster and in better shape post-PE than I was pre-

My initial symptom was pain way off to the side in my ribs.  I gave that one day to see if it improved.  Next day I coughed blood and took myself in to the clinic and was diagnosed via CT scan.  So yeah, quick diagnosis, fortunately.  My doctors told me the same thing -- exercise is ok, don't go all out though.

I find biking is good because leaning forward actually feels better.  Running is where I still feel it if I breathe deeply, which is why I've been doing jog/walk.

Edit: the scan showed what was there, was very small.

I have to say, there was someone famous,......  Horner?  someone... that said that that off to the side PE pain was the worst pain he ever felt in his life.  Not sure if yours was that bad, but mine was, could not breathe without feeling as if I was being stabbed.  Almost bad enough to call an ambulance but ended up driving myself to the ER.  Once admitted, morphine couldn't touch it, they had to practically put me out wth dilaudid for about 12 hours before it started subsiding.

You'll be back before you know it     One of the benefits for me was re-discovering my relationship, I realized I could hang out on a Saturday morning with my wife rather than riding for 4-6 hours....   Of course, now that I am riding again.......

I have a disturbing pain threshold -- I'm the guy who didn't use pain killers after patella ACL reconstruction.  So when something like this is "moderate pain" to me, I know well enough to get it checked out.

I am fortunate my urgent care clinic had a CT machine on site.  I'm told that is unusual.

I took back the "no infarction" comment because coughing blood is certainly sign of at least some damage.  But luckily minor as far as these things go.

Was.  July 1 only.  And yeah everything I've done since then has been under doctor supervision.  I've been making slow steady improvement, thankfully.

Hey Fred,

With the new additions and some of the old folk no longer being around, do you want to start a new thread??  This one is 125 pages, lol!!!

I created such a bad blister on my right foot that i still cannot put a normal shoe on. I have been going to work in a dress shoe and a flip flop, HAHAHAHA

I have taken the week off,  basically i cant do anything because of the heel. I will try riding Saturday and Sunday, should be ok by then.

Humidity finally is starting to subside here, thank god.

And i do kinda miss running, after not running for a month, i miss the 3-4 milers. I would like to start running a couple times a week again soon.

TankBoy - 2012-07-19 8:00 AMThanks! This has to go down in my personal record book as the craziest "get out of town" week I have ever "enjoyed." We have been having these tremendous storms in Atlanta and on Sunday night we had a huge 100' tall mature white oak come down on our house. We got it buttoned up quickly but the power was out until yesterday morning. Another storm rolled in yesterday afternoon and I was loading up the car to head to the airport another one of our oaks dropped a giant limb on the car and through the windshield - fortunately for me I had just gone in to grab the rest of our bags. Without thinking I jumped in and pulled it back under cover and so of course got tiny shards of glass all in my hands, forearms and back of legs that I am still picking ou this morning. All is good - our flight was delayed by the weather but we made it to Albany around midnight. Headed to Lake Placid right now. Yee-Haw.
WOW Rusty!Man I sure you and your family are alright!Safe travels to Lake Placid. I am leaving tomorrow. I'll PM you my cell.

Holy cow! Glad you are okay - with all of that stress i guess you're not as worried about the race ...

Best of luck!

Wow...glad you're okay.

This was my morning - hill repeats on the hill off the beach and a mile swim in Lake Michigan.  Water was perfect this morning - 70 degrees and calm.  That is Grand Haven Lighthouse.

Jason - awesome ride.  I can only imagine...

James - have a great time at LP.

Question for the group.  When doing 4x10 or 2x20 at between 95-100%, where do you find your HR?  I did 4x10min @ 95% last night, and while I felt like I was pushing to keep the wattage where it needed to be, the HR stayed in low Z3.  I know how 100% should feel, just nto so sure about 95%, and wondered if anyone had a good correlation between their HR and FTP.  As always with HR, mine tends to differ a bit depending on the day, but I'm curious what the rest of the group tends to notice.

Oh, and I'm officially disappointed with the tour this year.  Not with Wiggins, he did everything he was supposed to do to stay in yellow, and Cadel at least gave it a go but didn't have the legs (also heard mention of a parasite?).  But the other "contenders" - these guys sucked.  Let's see, I need to make up x minutes, so I figure I'll wait till the last climb with about 4km to go, and then I'll attack and maybe gain 30sec (which they didn't)....Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but still.  Sky may have a really strong team, but it's not like they had to go charging up the mountain chasing down attacks.  They just kept riding tempo, and the attackers came back to them.  Just no-one strong enough to mount any challenge.

Froome needed to be on a different team so we could see some real fireworks.  [/rant]

Neil:  I have basically resigned to throwing my HR monitor into the garbage.  My HR will vary quite a bit from when I workout early morning vs. middle of the day and also when I work out inside or outside.  This is why training with power on the bike has been so nice.

I have really dialed in my RPE w/ power so that is my secondary indicator for me.  95% is still fairly difficult.  As long as you are in that range I would not sweat it too much.

Agree on the TdF.  I was hoping for some fireworks yesterday and got blanks.  It would be nice to see Froome on a different team for certain.
