Pre-race routine:

I was resting and working on work stuff until 4:30, when registration began. I asked Ben, my 12 year old, if he was really going to run with me. He said yes, so we got our running gear on and drove down to the coffee shop and signed up. At about 4:50, we ran down to the lake and ran one lap, then got back to the coffee shop at 5:10. We hung around there until about 5:25 and then made our way out to the street for instructions.
Event warmup:

The course was pretty easy to follow. I'm not sure how many people were running/walking. Maybe 50-60?

Comments:

Started in the middle and still managed to get behind walkers. Broke out pretty quickly. By time we turned down 3rd, I was settled into a sustainable pace. I had Beverly in my sight. There were two more women in front of her. I had her in my sight and tried to catch her while still maintaining an easy pace. When we turned down Broadway, with half a mile to go, I kicked up a little and hung right off her left shoulder, about five paces back. Once we crossed the railroad tracks, I took off. I don't think she even tried to stay with me. Passing her, made me 3rd woman, in a very weak field. First place woman finished in 25:xx.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. For being in my bed one hour before race time, and still hacking a little, this went perfectly.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran back south on Broadway, looking for Ben and Thomas. I ended up missing them, somehow. The finished in 31:xx. They were pretty happy.

Drank a little water, picked up my hot cocoa, then walked over to Gambino's where hubby had ordered pineapple pizza for me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

We had horrible winds today. 30-35 mph sustained, with gusts up to 50mph. Running into the north was brutal.

Nice job Felicia.  Is that not a 5K PR for you?  I know you ran a 28:xx 5K split in a sprint Tri, just not sure what your best 5K is.  O.K. maybe a "weak" field but running a 5K in twenty something minutes is far from weak, especially when we're not "ahem" twenty or thirty something anymore :P

What an awesome deal. Show up, sign up, run. I love it. I love that the whole thing was spur of the moment and you still went out and had a good run. You can't beat it when your fitness level is good to go!
