Subject: The principals wife - a snow day rant
Just a meaningless rant. Read on if you choose.

We have had snow and ice this week. Lots of it. Hubby has had school canceled, ball games canceled, rescheduled, phone ringing constantly. This is all fine. But guess what people - if he is not here and I answer the phone the answer is "I DON'T KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!" I don't know if the dance team is still going to competition. I don't know if the school is still hosting a ball game. I don't know if you can shoot hoops at the school because you're bored at home. I don't work at the school, know the schedule of anything, keep tabs on the sporting events, or make any decisions about anything that goes on with anything at the school. I will not know the answer if you keep asking me questions. I am not his personal secretary.

Ok, continue..... and make this snow go away already!

I guess under such circumstances, you can safely assume the phone is from students' family.  Might as well not answer them.  Do you have called ID?  Can you screen the in-coming call?
It does get annoying after a while..

If you have a land line, there's a wire that goes into the back of your phone. Unplug it.

If you have a mobile, and when it rings an unknown number pops up, don't answer it.

Problem solved.

but, do you know if there will be school on Monday?

do you know if the cheerleaders can flip each other through the hoop at school b/c they're bored?

do you know any answers to the state proficiency tests?

do you know why the sky is blue?

*in a whiny voice* But you're the principal's wife!  Shouldn't you know these things???

Ugh.  Sorry about your frustration!

Ha ha, Robin - you get where I'm coming from!

We do have an unlisted number but no caller ID. That would be helpful. Don't want to unplug the phone today because my kids are visiting my in-laws and I want to make sure I'm available if they need anything. It's mostly the teachers and coaches calling. The phone doesn't really slow anybody down anyway. They come to the house too. I answered the door to one of his teachers yesterday in my tri shorts and a sweatshirt - got a funny look for that one! I really understand people calling with all the rescheduling he has had to do. I just wish they would call his cell phone and not get huffy when I don't know the answers. Oh yeah, and don't call me "Hun"!

Thanks for reading my rant! I feel better now.Wink

I can commiserate. My was was my principal and then my superintendent for a few years. All of my friends would call me to see if we had school, a game, etc. It used to tie up the phone and tick off my dad. The one good part was that since he was responsible for making the call, he come into my room and tell me to go back to bed.

When I get tired of the phone ringing at home I take it off the hook.  Anybody I WANT to talk to would probably call my cell.

And of course, if all the calls are just asking school questions, you could always forward the calls to the school until the flurry of calls let up.

I'm a teacher and I can't imagine calling my principal at home to ask that kind of stuff.  If it was something super-critical, I would send an email to his home account or *maybe* a Facebook message.  Although I try not to mix work and FB.  A couple years ago we had a snow day on the first day of exams and had to re-do the exam week schedule.  I emailed the principal (work email) to get the answer to a pretty important question.  NO way would I call him at home.  That's just rude.

I used to do something similar. I lived in the same city as an official with the Intl. Firefighters Union who shared my name. He apparently had some sort of PR function as I used to get calls from reporters pretty frequently. At first I politely informed them that they had the wrong guy. Eventually I got tired of it and if they didn't bother to ask if they had the right person, I'd answer their questions.  "We're striking at midnight!", "We'll resume negotiations if and only if they bring donuts!", "The entire union leadership is resigning effective tomorrow at noon." etc.

Good times...

Haha I like how the majority of the male responses on here are how to fix the problem.

The female responses are sympathetic and offer no solutions.

Guess some things never change eh guys? Repeat after me, "I will listen, I will be sympathetic. I will not offer any solutions unless a solution is requested."

To the OP: good luck with all that snow, sounds like a real mess!

The real question is... If you can make it to school to shoot hoops, go to a dance competition, host a ball game, ect..  Why cann't you make it to school to learn something?

Bwahahahahha!  Those are both awesome.  But I'd never have the guts to do it.

But, seriously, they show up at your house?  Really?  That would tick me off to no end.  I don't even show up to friend's homes unexpectedly and the only way I would show up at my boss' home unexpectedly is if my car broke down on a frigid night and my cell phone was dead and the co-worker who lives near her wasn't home and I had no other option.  But since she lives way the hell in the middle of nowhere the likelihood of this happening is about .0000001%.    Put a sign on the door that says Mr. Soandso isn't home and Mrs. Soandso doesn't know the answer.  Then don't answer the door.
