Get in Gear
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 37m 24s
Overall Rank = 99/4037
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 5/268
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 to eat a piece of toast with peanut butter and a bowl of cereal, glass of OJ. Met gang at 6:45 to drive to MPLS.
Event warmup:

Easy run for 15 minutes, probably should have done quite a bit more. Calves were feeling very tight and legs overall didn't have much spring to them.
Run
  • 37m 24s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Ideally, I was hoping to run 5:40 mile pace but my legs just weren't up to it today after this past week with several tough workouts. Lined up at the start so that I was in the top 75-100 or so and with a 99th place finish overall it was about right. Simply went out and played the pace by ear to see how my legs felt. Couldn't really kick it into another gear so I just tried to make the best of it. Good workout.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Trained through this race so wasn't expecting to be very fast.
Post race
Warm down:

20 minute easy run

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tired legs from this week's workouts. Just wanted to use the race as another workout.

Event comments:

Get in Gear is a huge spring race for the Twin Cities. The course follows the bluffs above the Mississippi River so it is very winding and paying attention to running the tangents is important. Very nice course and not too tough.

Great job! I have no idea what you mean about running the tangents -- I have a LOT to learn, obviously

BikerGrrrl - 2007-04-29 9:18 AM I have no idea what you mean about running the tangents

It just means that the shortest distance on a race course is one where you run a straight line as much as possible.  So, if the course is winding don't just run in the center of the road, but run close to the tangent of each corner.  With this strategy you will end up switching sides of the road a fair amount if it's a very twisting course.  When they measure a race course for certification I'm pretty sure they measure the course by hitting the tangents on curves, rather than measuring in the center of the road.  Hope I've made sense.

Jim, great 'training run!'  Wow, running ANY race at 6 minutes splits would be considered 'stellar' in my books.  Sorry we didn't get to meet up with you.  Get in Gear is getting to be just a BIG race.  I talked to several people that had trouble with traffic and parking and barely got to the race start in time.  My wife and I will probably be looking for a different 10K next year.

Congrats on your race.  I'm sure you'll reach your peak fairly soon this season...

BTW, have you picked your marathon for this year?

My only "marathon" this year will be at the end of IM WI     My only remaining running race is the Gary Bjorkland half marathon up at Grandmas.  Couple of duathlons in late May then all tris after that.
