dblbogy - 2010-08-15 3:18 PM Here's another example of how to not look like a noobie:

Don't try to put your bike (number 537) in rack 573. Embarassed

Not that I did this or anything.

Did this @ an HIM last year w/my running shoes when setting up transition (T1 & T2 were in different locations.)  Had a 20+ min T2 trying to figure out how I could lose a size-14 running shoe.

I'm not an expert. But, I heard that putting on a shirt after the swim is difficult. Especially after putting on your helmet.Laughing

Facepalm.

See why I need a checklist?  Now I realize I will need to practice the checklist too.

The seam on the swim cap goes front-to-back, not side-to-side.  I've seen a few commit this "oops."

nc452010 - 2010-08-14 4:41 PM Here's one I never see mentioned....

Timing chip strap = left ankle.

And yet you'll see pros with the timing chip strap on their right ankle...about the last thing that "screams" newbie that's been brought up in this thread, IMO.

Chrissie (wearing it on the right in most pictures, actually)

I've read that in the Kona race they tell you to wear it on your right ankle as the turn around is a left hand turn so your right foot is going to be closer to the ground and thus closer to the timing mat.

I have read the left ankle thing too.  I for one would have considered you a newb if you had it on your right ankle before I saw the above pics.  I would still wear it on the left just because of the chain and all.

Make sure you know which end of your bike helmet goes in front.  Seems obvious, but you'd be surprised...

Don't drown on the swim,Don't crash on the bike & Don't have a heart attack on the run. The rest does not matter. Have fun with your 1st it's the only one you'll get.

V1per41 - 2010-08-16 3:47 PM Mistake I made at my last race that I haven't seen anyone here mention.

If you have to put the bike number on your top tube put it as far forward as possible.  I put mine as far back as I could and it was brushing against my leg every pedal stroke and gave me a paper cut on my knee.

x2. I am not a newb but in my 6th Half Ironman my bike sticker rubbed my leg on every single stroke becuase I placed it too far back on the top tube. A few miles in I couldn't stand it any longer and ripped it off. As a result, picking up my bike was a bit of a hassle as the transition volunteers were very dilligent about matching up the bike number with the athlete's wristband number.

Lesson learned, 5 years into this.

That happened to me at Boulder 70.3.  I was bleeding from a bunch of little from my tag.  I didn't think to tear it off though.
