Subject: What is your opinion on LASIK?

Over the years, I've considered having my eyesight corrected through LASIK, but have always backed out due to a fear of possible bad outcomes.  But now that I'm back to doing a lot more athletic activities, I've been really thinking about it again.  It just gets so tiring having to deal with prescription glasses (both regular and sunglasses) while running and biking, and Rx goggles while swimming.

How many of you have opted to undergo LASIK surgery, and what was your outcome?

Please feel free to elaborate on your experiences.

A third option would be to have one eye done at a time. Yeah… the recovery is longer but at least you know. That’s what I did. Kind of… I actually had my left eye done first because it was much worse and as it turned out that was enough. I’m now in the 20/30 range and that’s good enough for anything I do. Just be aware they might discourage you from trying one at a time. It eased my fear a little but, in hind sight (haha), it’s probably not necessary.

Overall, my correction went pretty well. I did suffer from very dry eyes for a while which I think this is fairly common. They end up plugging a tear duct which helped. They also recommended that I start taking flax seed oil which also helped. I’m not sure exactly why but I was told it should help with the “quality” of my tears. I think it works so therefore it does?

Anyway, I don’t have any regrets at this point. I never wore my glasses and hated my contacts. They always bothered me. I rock climb, ride motorcycles and other things that make glasses and contacts a real bummer. I’m happy I don’t have to worry about it anymore.

I hope this helps.

I had IntraLase LASIK done a couple of years ago, and it was worth every penny. One thing to consider if you live in a really dry climate is that you might end up with "dry eyes." Where I live, anything above 15% humidity is considered humid, so I still use some eye drops on the worst days. But if I'm somewhere more humid (40% and above) I have no problems at all.

If I were to do it again I would seriously consider LASEK instead of LASIK. If you are young enough to think that you might need surgery a second time in your life, look into PRK, since that type of surgery can be done over and over.

Of course, the best thing to do is talk to the 2 or 3 best surgeons in your area and ask a lot of questions!

I did mine about 2 years ago and it is worth every penny.  I actually had to have it touch up because it went from 20/15 to 20/25.  I could have lived without the touchup but for a few hundred $ why not.  Pain was none, recovery time was immediate other than eye drops for a few day.  I was seeing 20/15 in 5 hrs.  I actually went to the surgury the same day as a friend and they had horrible vision and he was scared to death.  AFter it was over his comment was "that was it???"  He was amazed.  If you can afford it I highly recommend it.  Now for me, I did it before the tri bug hit so I would have preferred $3K toward a bike but I make due with my bike I have.

Money well spent.  I did it about 5 years ago and couldn't be happier with the outcome.  Well maybe if I had x-ray vision but, you know, that cost quite a bit more.

Do any of you who had it done have unusually large pupils?  That's another concern of mine, since mine are large, and I've read that this can lead to white halos around lights at night...

I've known a couple of people that have done LASIK and the results were 50/50.  As for me, I'm to scared to do it.  In my opinion you are trusting someone, although certificated, to mess with my eyesight is very scary.  The could sneeze, be having a bad day and the next thing you know I could be blind.  To me I know glasses and contacts work so that is what I am going to stick with. You only get one pair of eyes and if it means wearing glasses to be able to see, then glasses it is. Also, you always run the risk of your eyesight going back to the way it was before the LASIK, so it's not 100% guarentee?  My 2 cents.

For a couple of years I had been considering having this procedure done but I recently went to a new optometrist who informed me that I was not a good candidate because of the color of my eyes. I have always thought that I had blue or hazel eyes, but she said that I have flakes of gray coloring in my eyes and that the lightness of that would have probably resulted in the halos that some people experience. She is not an surgeon, I am not sure what an eye surgeon would say, but I am with a previous post, I would hate to risk my vision at this point and end up worse than it already is. Good luck!

I had it done about 8 years ago. Vision before was terrible. Vision after was better than if I'd had contacts or glasses. It was AWESOME. That lasted about 4 years, and now I have to wear contacts most of the time. My vision now is MUCH better than it was before I had surgery, but its deteroriated consistently since I had the surgery. I get halos around lights at nights, and night driving is less than desirable (I often see imaginary animals or people due to the halos, which makes my passengers a tad nervous

Overall, I don't regret doing it, but most people I know that have had it done, now wear contacts or glasses...something to consider before taking the plunge.

I had LASIK done a year ago this Friday, and I am incredibly happy with the results. I was about 20/200 before, and am 20/12.5 now.

I was really nervous, but it wasn't bad at all. My surgeon also used the IntraLase laser to cut the corneal flap, and I think that helps lessen even more the chances of complications.

My eyes were really blurry for a few hours after the procedure, and felt huge and puffy, like I couldn't close them completely when I blinked. But that was gone by the next morning, and although my eyes were drier than usual for 2-3 months, I just used eyedrops a lot, so that was ok. I was worried that it would always be that way, b/c my eyes seemed naturally dry to begin with (contacts really irritated my eyes), but they were fine 3 months in. I rarely use eye drops now. (The prescription drops I had to use for 2 weeks after surgery did sting at first.)

Anyway, the only "bad" thing I have noticed since the surgery is that I do see halos around some lights, but it is sooo minimal... On the rare occasion I do notice it (e.g. staring at a stop light at night waiting for it to change), I actually can't tell if I used to see them or not before the surgery. It is not a big deal at all!

It is just SO nice to not have to worry about contacts/glasses anymore, especially when training!
Good luck if you do decide to go through with it!

I had corrective eye surgery over 10 years ago. Back in the days before it was done with a laser. Yep, I allowed someone to take a scalpel and cut my eyeball. Scary, you better believe it. Worth it, absolutely. I now require reading glasses but my distant vision is still very good.

First of all I will state that I am an Optometrist. Second of all I will state that my Lasik was the best $300 I ever spent. Sorry, I got a heck of a deal for being the subject during a live seminar 8 yrs ago.

I will address some of the issues and comments, but by no means am I all knowing and seeing(get it, seeing). There are no surgical proceedures that are 100% perfect 100% of the time. Lasik is a success 98% of the time. Dry eyes is one of the more common complaints. But again, the majority of people do not have a problem after a few months. Lasek, Lasik, and PRK can all be done more than once if you are still a good candidate. Your Dr. will determine which proceedure would be best for you. There is no such thing as X-ray vision. JUST KIDDING!! Large pupils are a concern, again your Dr will determine if the size of your pupils disqualify you as a good candidate. I would not worry about you or the Dr. sneezing. The laser can be halted at a moments notice, and then restarted from the point it was stopped. Chances of your vision going back to your original prescription are extremely slim. You could have some prescription come back, but if your RX was -5.00 before it will not be going back to -5.00. I have never, ever heard of someone not being a good candidate because of their eye color. I have no explanation why someone would be told that. "MarkK", I suggest a second opinion.

The #1 rule I tell patients is to NOT shop for the cheapest bidder. One other note would to be aware that everyone having refractive surgery, in their 20s and 30s, will eventually need glasses for reading. It is called presbyopia or Mother Nature, which ever you prefer.

I would have LASIK in a split second, I am tired of losing a contact lens swimming (always the left one) and have terrible astigmatism...BUT my eye doctor won't sign off on it b/c I'm almost 50 and in his mind everyone gets cataracts at some point so I should wait to get a known correction with cataract surgery (like when I'm 70 and not doing anything that strenuous but the occasional workout b/c I want to?)

Everyone I know who has had the procedure has been thrilled with the results

If you are a good canditate, go set up an appointment tomorrow.  If you don't have the money, then borrow it.  This is about your quality of life.  I had mine done one year ago and still can't believe how well I can see!!

Your near-sightedness or far-sightedness can be corrected by adjusting the power, of the implant lens, during cataract surgery. Your astigmatism can NOT be corrected by the same means. I would recommend a second opinion.

I had lasik surgery at age 37. I HIGHLY recommend it if you are a good candidate. I had 20/20 vision afterwards. One suggestion... I now wish I considered having one eye "under corrected" to decrease chances of developing farsightedness, which I have now at 44. Ask you Opthamologist about this.

Thanks for chiming in with your expertise here, it's appreciated.

You mentioned that the eye doctor would determine if you're a good candidate...  Offhand, do you know if type 2 diabetics are disqualified from LASIK?  I'm type 2, but my diabetes is well controlled.  Of course I'll ask my eye doctor when I see him next, I'm just curious if you have some idea.

My wife and eye (I) had it done about 9 years ago, when it first was starting to be performed in this country. It had been used in Canada and Europe for years. It was $4000 per eye back then. I had all the same concerns and worries expressed here. After the procedure my first thought was that this was a procedure that is going to be performed at the corner Wal Greens, or Sears in the future. I was so quick (30 minutes per eye), and so simple, that I'm surprised the sucess rate is only 98%. My wife did have hers touched up a bit about a year after the procedure, my vision has been fine ever since. It is so nice to wake up in the dark and be able to read the clock.

Two of my sisters had LASIK done back in the 90s - they both LOVED it.

I had RK (back when they used a KNIFE! before there was LASIK) and I LOVED it.

I'd do it again if it became necessary.
