Subject: IMAZ - April- One way bike shipping?
OK, so I'm going out to watch IMAZ in April. As I am training for my own IM, I can't really miss a weekend of training.

I have some family driving to Arizona a few days before the race, and I can let them take my bike. I have two bikes, so it won't be a big deal.

But, to get the bike back, I'll have to ship it. Does anyone know if I can ship it back only? If so, how do I do that? Who do I use? I would guess I could use the service the racers are using... but who is that?

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

If this doesn't work out I can possibly rent a bike from a lady who is opening a bike shop this month in Tempe. Which that might work, but as we all know, only our bike fits us best. And a 6-7 hour training ride on a strange bike doesn't sound all that great.

If you pay enough you can do anything

No idea if they do one ways, but Tri Bike Transport is what many use

 http://www.tribiketransport.com/index.html

Also, these guys are listed on the SOMA race page, might want to give them a call.

do you have a bike box??  I would imagine shipping something one way isn't that big a deal. Just like the bike being shipped to the bike shop or buying a bike off the internet.  I would check out UPS just to see what options are available.

Are you flying out and back.. could you fly back with your bike as an oversized luggage?

Tri Bike transport took my bike one way back from St. A's last year.  My husband and kids drove down for vacation and I flew..they brought my bike so I needed to get it home.

They may do it for you but depends if they have room on the truck going back to TX. They told me to contact them the week of the event to see if they had space. They just charged me half the normal price.

Where do you live? If you are in a neighboring state, I'm sure you can find a BTer to drive it to you.

I'm in Los Angeles so if you are anywhere between Tempe and Los Angeles and/or any neighboring cities of Los Angeles, I don't mind driving it back to you (since I'm driving to and from).

After looking into shipping my bike all over the world multiple times....

DHL generally had the best rates.  But try UPS and FedEx too.  CONUS to CONUS I would expect to pay around $100-$150.  You can get a discount if you have an online account with some of these places.

Once you get to the size of a bike box, you are looking at DIMENSIONAL weight not actual weight.  So, my bike box weighs about 60 pounds loaded up...but because of the size they charge me for about 90 pounds.  Load that thing up!   Don't cheat too badly on the measurements...they WILL remeasure your package and a single inch can mean an extra $50.  Happened to me when I sent my bike to Alaska.  Their machine measurements came out an inch off of my measurements and they charged me an extra $50.  I called them up and complained and they credited me.

Call me skeptical, but I wouldn't ship it in anything but a hard sided case.

If you DO ship it...add insurance!  Preferably over $1000.  Once the value of a package gets over a certain amount (I think it is around $1k) they treat it COMPLETELY differently.  Which is good for your bike.

The US Postal service website says that they will take anything up to 70 pounds and under 130" in size (that's length + twice the width and twice the height).  I'm testing out this theory this afternoon trying to ship my bike to the Middle East.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Bottom line...if you're only shipping it one way, I would go with something like Tri Bike Transport.  Otherwise you have to acquire a bike case somewhere.

as to not miss any bike workouts on my tri bike leading up to IMFL and chose to fly with my bike.  I had a cardboard bike box and a cardboard wheel box .  I flew Delta and had to pay $80 for the bike and did not get charged with the wheel box.

For the return I shipped the bike UPS ground with minimum insurance for ~$50 and flew with the wheels.

I trusted my packing ability and have no problem tearing down my bike and building it up - which is a good portion of the fees associated with the bike transport companies.

They took it!  $105 to get a bike halfway around the world.  What a deal.

I'm in disbelief that a cardboard bike box didn't get destroyed on an airline.  How did you pack it?

How much do you have to disassemble it in a cardboard box?  It doesn't look like it would fit with the derailleurs still attached...

I've had two custom bikes shipped to me in cardboard boxes via ground so I had confidence in the method and had all the packing material (the plastic braces for the fork and rear triangle are key for piece of mind.

I removed: seat & post & xwing, pedals.  I detached the derailer (although it fit without having to remove it), wrapped it and taped it inside the rear triangle.  I removed the bars from the stem, wrapped those and taped securely to the front of the frame.

I also packed a lot of selected accessories in the box too, taking up volume between the packing foam and not adding too much weight (bottles, shoes, helmet, pump, etc.).

Yeah, it's that whole removing the derailleur thing that scares me.

Thanks. I called them. They sounded hesitent then said they would do it. Didn't really inspire a lot of confidence. Then they mentioned they just ship it UPS or FedEx. Ok, who here doesn't get a box from one of those places that isn't ripped or mashed? Not sure I want my bike to get beaten up.

That's exactly why I will never ever ship my bike in anything except it's hard-sided case.

But most bike shops are pretty good at packing.  They put padding and stuff.  And if they add enough insurance the package gets extra nice treatment.

Keep in mind that Tribe does this as an accomodation for their customers and it requires having someone break down the bike, pack it carefully, ect. That takes time from their staff and they don't want to be the local drop ship for bikes, which is understandable.

So I sent Tribike Transport an email (only way to contact them). I'm waiting to see what they say.

Looks like taking my own bike and shipping it back will be my best bet. I can't imagine doing a long ride on a rental. I do know someone opening a shop, but she isn't doing rentals... but said if I couldn't find one, she would hook me up. My only fear is that I would wreck the rental and then have to pay for it. Shipping my bike one way is way cheaper than paying for a wrecked Quin Roo.

I priced hard-sided bike cases on the internet... they are as much as the bike ($300-$500). Seriously, my Cervelo was $500. And I won't carry that bike on the plan unless it's in a hard sided carrier. Even then I still have to pay for the extra luggage fee.

How much do you plan to travel with your bike over the next 10 years?  The bike shipping fees for all the airlines I've researched is less than TriBikeTransport and the like.  Do enough races and it pays for itself.

I've got a cardboard bike box if you could borrow if you change your mind.

I don't plan on traveling that much. I'll travel to IMKY then that's it, unless it's close enough to drive. I really don't have the money to race out of town. As it is, I can't even race out of town even if I can drive to it. Can't afford the gas or the hotel room (mostly the hotel room!).

Yes, but I guarantee I have now spent more money transporting/shipping/protecting my bike than I paid for it...maybe both bikes combined even.
