Well, I have gotten a ton of useful information off this site, so I thought I would pass this along. Hopefully it helps some people.

www.mapmyrun.com is a website where you can measure out distances on maps of your neighborhood or whereever you train or race. I also use their daily training log to record my results of my training plan. It is all free, and very helpful. It is very user friendly, and easy to use.

Just spent the last hour finding, making and publishing routes. I LOVE that site.

You can do the same thing on this site; just click on the "add route" link when you log your workout. It'll allow you to map your run/ride, and save it.

MapMyRide.com is also more of the same with the focus on (you guessed it...) cycling.

I use mapmytri.com personally because all the same routes from mapmyrun and mapmyride are on the mapmytri page and that way I don't have to use two different sites. Just filter the search.

Either way, love the site and have been a big fan of it since it started.

the mapmyXXX sites are the same the they hit the same database. I entered a Ride in mapmyrun and you can find it on mapmyride. Just an FYI.

I add new routes here on my BT Blog.  Doesn't everybody?   I don't make my routes public because I don't want just anybody finding out where I live but it's great to calculate distance and great for the routes I do often.

Used to use map my run... But this is better!!!

I LOVE mapmyrun.com I use it for every run or ride I do.

It also keeps track of mileage on the shoes you use. I think that a fun little plus. Especially if you have a few pairs of shoes you use.

Question: given that we have the same functionality, is there a reason you use that other one over ours?

A) I did not know that this place had the same functionality (and I am a former 6 month silver member)

but more importantly

B) Had I known, I still would have used mapmyxxx.com over here because of the number of routes. Without looking, I have to guess that there are a lot more on that site than here. I pulled up Carmel, IN - the town I am close to that has a lot of runners riders. There are 168. Indianapolis - 650. I am more apt to search and use than post. Though I am creating routes there now.

I just tried to look here and could not even find where they are.

Go to your training blog and click on the globe icon next to the mini-calendar to go to your Route Manager:   route tracker

Here's the basic route creation page.

Okay. That is useful if I am tracking all my stuff here which is clearly what this site is for and what many use it for.

Can people make their routes public or search for others?

Sure. When you save a route you can set it as Private or not. And on the left side of the Route Manager page are two search functions, one for your routes and one for public routes.

I can answer this for me --  I prefer 2 things about mapmyxxx -- the "follow the roads" feature and the elevation smoothing.  FWIW, I find the extreme elevation reports on the BT route tracker to be kind of annoying -- I've been riding straight up a mountain 3000 feet every weekend, and a BT friend rides a slightly rolling neighborhood course with no more than a 200-foot incline ever, but the way BT adds up the overall elevation change, my friend looks like he is king of the mountains and gets the props.    I do think mapmyxxx underestimates, but I prefer that to the overestimation.  Hope that helps in your planning/thinking!
