Subject: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? I know the album's a bit old, but just picked it up So, The Pot may be among the best songs ever written, and would be great in the last 2 miles of a 10K. But the rest of the album? I've tried, I swear I've tried, but it all just seems like so much self indulgence and too much studio time. Should I give it another try or just resign myself to a $15 single??? |

Slower Than You 9566 Cracklantaburbs | Subject: RE: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? No way. 10,000 Days is much better than The Pot. Granted The Pot is catchier and sells records, but there are plenty of great songs on there. A lot of the album is Maynard dealing with the death of his mother, who was paralyzed for 27 years before she died (hence 10,000 Days). That song, Judith (her name), and Sober are all about her. |

Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? I wouldn't classify it as a ripoff, but it certainly didn't stand up to Lateralus and Ænima. I gave it a couple of listens, then put it away. I guess maybe I should pull it out again and give it another shot. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? There is a lot of "dead" space in the songs where it is just electronics and some instrumental that I'm not diggin' but it has its good points. |

I guess The Pot is probably seen by true Tool fans as too much of a sellout or pop-ish, but that song is amazing, and I wanted something else to live up to that. |

Master 1821 | Subject: RE: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? i wasn't blown away the first couple of times i listened to the album, but the more i listened, the more i liked it. sure, you've gotta skip through some chanting and the hospital scene, but how can you not get going 4 and a half minutes into Jambi? ....oh, wait....that's right, you probably like led zeppelin, the rolling stones, and the beatles. http://youtube.com/watch?v=PEBJEWsi_DY Edited by jimbo 2008-04-02 5:30 PM |

"I have a suggestion to keep you all occupied, learn to swim!" 46 & 2 is the best Tool song ever :P I think that 10,000 days is a great album to listen to all the way through (I like the chanting and hospital tracks even, as long as they are viewed as a whole). I agree that there are fewer "singles" per se, but I love the album as a whole and highly recommend treating it as an entire work instead of splitting it up into singles. Just my .02. |

Pro 3673 MAC-opolis | Subject: RE: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? As a TOOL fan since "Opiate", I have to agree that 10,000 Days was lacking a bit for a 5 year layoff. The 20+ minute tribute to Maynard's mom was a bit much. The Pot, Jambi, Vicarious and Right in Two are great tracks. Lateralus still far and away my all time fav album from any band. Twas recorded at the height of their metaphysical musings and is loaded with so much it. |

Subject: RE: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? OK, I take it back, partially, the tracks Big Sexy lists are indeed great, given a little more time for digestion. Tracks 1 and 2 are an incredible 1 -2 punch off the bat, and are IMHO better than The Pot. The rest is still too inconsistent, but at least I got 4 songs for my money I've had worse albums (CDs.... showing my age) |

ChrisM - 2008-05-21 1:56 PM I've had worse albums (CDs.... showing my age) Slight hijack, but I'm comfortably continuing to use "album" as an abstract term to describe "a collection of songs released simultaneously, often having a common theme or concept." Really has nothing to do with the medium on which it was released such as LP, cassette, 8-track, CD, or MP3 files. |

Master 2299 New York | Subject: RE: Tool - 10,000 Days - Ripoff? I like it, but it's leaning a bit towards the metaphysical for my taste. Vicarious, Jambi & RIT are all in regular rotation on my running playlist, though. I love all of their stuff, but I think as an album this is my least favorite. Though I do like the line hidden deep in one of the instrumental tracks: "she' the one with the voice like a F'in modem, dude." |
