First, only, and possibly last podium finish was just last week.

I finished 3rd in the 40-49 age group in a local super sprint.  I knew I had a chance to podium.  I finished 5th last year.   I looked at last year's results and at those registered for the race this year, and one of last year's top finishers was back this year.  I figured I could stay with him in the water and on the bike, but he is a much faster runner.  It turns out I beat him out of the water, put some time on him on the bike, but at about the 1.5 mile mark he passed me.  After yelling "crap," I tried to stick him, but he left me in the dust.

For me, the podium finish was nice, but what felt really good was the feeling of actually racing, instead of just feeling like I was out there doing my own thing surrounded by a bunch of other people.

I tried to savor the feeling.  This was a very small race, and it was on a college campus and most of the athletes were college kids (there were only 8 in my age group).  It is now back to being MOP for me.

Felt pretty good, but then I realized how under subscribed the race was.

Congratulations Spokes, and everyone else with a podium finish too!

I'm not sure if this qualifies but at a recent 10k race they were giving out place medals to the top 5 in each age group, and I got 5th out of 25 in mine. It depends on who shows up for sure because I know of lots of locals in my age group, who could have beat me, that weren't racing that day. Still, they called my name and I was thrilled as well as totally surprised. Until recently with tri training, I've never considered myself any kind of athlete. (Ok, I got second place in high jump at my school once in grade 7, but that was a fluke.) I was showing the medal off at the office the next day.

I about fell over with shock with my first podium finish. Second tri ever...short sprint. Race where I broke my wrist falling during the bike dismount but managed to change shoes and finish. Probably should have gone straight to urgent care after the race, but persuaded my wife to stick around the site until results went up. I go look at the sheet and there I am: 1st in M45-49, broken wrist and all. Small AG, but still, first is first.

My one and probably only podium finish was for a little small town 5K race where there were only 6 people in my AG.  Again like a bunch of other people I found out after I left and never got to do the walk.  But what was more exciting about the race was it was the first race I left my dad in the dust...sigh....good times!

Get used to it dude, it might have been your first taste of hardware, but it is definitely not the last

Oh, and one of these days you will quit saying the word "Never". Statements that include that word have a funny way of coming true long before your ready for it.

As in "I will never run another marathon" or "I Will never run an Ironman".

My first podium spot was just a 10k.  I placed first in the clydesdale division.  I was happy about it, but felt a little sheepish because even at 240lbs, I was lighter and in better shape than the other clydes.  I might have felt a little better if I was in my AG.

The second time was 4th in my first HIM (clydes again).  Again, it was nice, but they gave out 5 awards and they only had 8 people or so in the division.  So most of us got them.  It's still nice to remember and show off the hardware though!  People that see it don't have to know the circumstances!

It wasn't till this year(my 2nd real season) that I didn't finish top 3 in my age group at a race. Actually I've only placed 2 out of the 5 races I've done so far this year and I'm faster.

Given 3 of my races I've won my age group just by showing up. lol

The biggest suprise placing was at a 10k that had about 1500 people in it, I didn't think I had a chance to place. Maybe a sneaky 3rd place finish. I ended up 1st with minutes on the next guy. I wasn't sure if I should be happy that no one real quick showed up, or mad that I had no competition. This year I think they're making me pay for the easy wins like those. In my last triathlon I would of been first in all but 2 of the other age groups where I would of been 2nd. In my age group? I got 10th!

You *still* can if you kept the cast

Er...nope...never happier to be rid of anything, ever. (Do still have the post-cast brace lying around for no good reason, however, but it's not so good for writing on...)

Great job Spokes and congratulations!!!!

I can’t remember exactly my first podium.  It was a sprint in HI Leeward or Windward something in 86’ or 87’.  I know it’s sad.

I do remember my first BIG podium x2, 1st in military and 1st in age group.  I was also in the top 20 overall.  This was the 8th annual Bud Light Tinman Triathlon in Hawaii.

Congrats! I feels good, doesn't it? I placed 3rd in my AG at my first tri last summer. I was exhilarated because the only other "race" I had ever done before (apart from a 5K a couple of weeks earlier) was as a kid: a bike race where I came in dead last! What a traumatic event for a competitive kid! So, the medal I got at my first tri took care of the bad memory for good.

It was my first sanctioned road race. Myself and three other cyclist broke away from the peloton and stayed out front for the rest of the race. That was also my only podium finish, I'm getting into tris and did an 18th in my first one so I'm looking forward to some next year.

Don't think I'll ever see that podium myself, but I'll happily live variously through all you other BT'ers that have ... way to go guys!

I'm already thinking of doing Sacramento Cowtown Marathon in October...

I thought about that one, but decided on Humboldt Redoods marathon instead. Give it a look.
