I'm a project manager / engineer for a construction company.

It's cool to be able to drive around the city and know that I was vital in getting some of the building I see built.  It's also great that no 2 projects I do are the same.  Every building if different and has unique challenges.

I'm a scientist.

I like the fact that I get to work on projects everyday which I think are important, both for the company and also for the rest of society. Things like breaking our dependence on oil for chemical feedstocks developing new polymers with fewer safety concerns than current offerings. I also love the autonomy that I have to do my job. The targets are somewhat well defined, but the path is usually left pretty open.

I am a Peoplesoft Application Consultant for HR. I work at a university where I work 35 hours a week with lots of vacation and extra time off... I geta really Cheap gym membership, I have a short commute, I get to solve complex problems all the time and test out new situations with the system. I work with some really smart people.

I also work with PeopleSoft. I design and maintain the schedule of classes for our department and use student records for advising.

I'm a (newly tenured, yeah!) university professor. When I'm not busy with administrative stuff, like scheduling, I teach German language, literature and film courses. I also write and publish articles on holocaust literature, humor in literature and film, and on language pedagogy.

What I love most about my job is the interaction with students. Knowing that I make a difference in their lives and that I provide an opportunity for them to grow and expand their horizons helps me get out of bed in the morning. Well, most mornings. I also like that I have a flexible schedule (apart from class time) and can do a lot of my work from home.

Summers off? Maybe this year for the first time in 20 years. Usually, I'm expected to do my research/writing during that time. Summers are not paid, unless I teach a class; my regular salary is for 9 months only. But I like the flexibility to decide myself how to spend the 3 summer months.

I'm happy about being able to do what I love to do and get paid for it.
I'm happy about living in a beautiful place and having the (physical and financial) means to enjoy it.
I'm happy about working with people that care about learning and education.

What a fun topic!!

I have two proffessions!

#1--Wildlife Biologist--Love handling different wildlife and love being outside all the time.

#2--Personal Trainer--Love helping people learn to love their body and love being active while working.

Both proffessions allow me to have an incredibly flexible schedule.  I would chew my hand off if I had to sit in a cube all day!

I am in the military, Army to be specific. Do not have to worry about what I will wear to work, get to travel, flexible hours in my current position, 1 hour a day allowed for physical fitness and combined with a half hour lunch can knock the run out.

tikicult - 2008-04-30 9:27 AM Do you work for ESRI? If so, please get ArcGIS working on Vista please... thanks! Anyway, I am sanitary sewer hydraulic modeler. I plan sewer system rehabilitation and upgrades for our clients. Everything from new lines that needed to be upgraded yesterday, to planning out systems in 2038. What I love about my job is that its like playing a video game called SimSewer all day. I do stay grounded in reality though once I realize that my work is effecting thousands of people and their health/safety. The worst part about the job is that people generally don't even care what happens to stuff after it flushes or how much work goes into these things until its spilling out a manhole in their yard. Then, the person is quite upset that the city can't afford to fix it, even though they personally voted down the tax increase that was needed to do it...

No, I work for the City and County of Denver.  I do use ESRI software daily, but we have decided moving to VISTA is not in our best interests.   Good luck.

Yeah, don't goto Vista. ArcGIS is really broken on it. Luckily, the processes I do in ArcView are not affected by the incompatibilities.

Seeing the lightbulb over a student's head come on makes me happy.
Hearing "Man, I was never good at science, but I like biology!" also makes me happy.

I'm an ER nurse.  I've been doing emergency medical stuff for more than 20 years and I can't imagine doing anything else.  I was also a flight nurse for 9 years (hence the avatar) but have had my feet planted firmly on the ground for the last 2 years now.

My profession is rewarding beyond imagination when I can literally save someone's life, help a sick child smile, or make someone comfortable while they die.  It can also be incredibly frustrating when dealing with truly stupid people.  Although, those people are generally good job security.  There's something new or interesting nearly every night at work and I love it!

Environmental Scientist/Engineer.  Do remediation work (groundwater, soil, air, notsomuch surface water, that ends up being an ecologist's thing) and compliance (permitting) work.

I'm in consulting though, and it's sucked the fun right out of it.  I hope to be a Cube Farm Escapee VERY soon.  Once I figure out what I want to do when I grow up, anyway.

I have two jobs and both are rewarding in very different ways:

I'm an educational consultant and I specialize in advocacy for special needs students.  I make sure kids are receiving the services they need in the least restrictive environments possible.

I also head up the regional indoor and outdoor cycling programs for a fitness company. Part of my job is to lead group rides... I get paid to ride my bike .

So, after just emerging from what I've been told was a "1/4 Life Crisis" where I nearly changed my world upside down...I am an Army Officer in the Military Police Corps.  I do like not having to worry about what I have to wear, the money isn't bad (well, for a single officer) but what I like most is training/leading/mentoring/coaching soldiers, cadets, and growing with my peers and learning from some great mentors that truly invest in and believe in me.

90% of my time is market research/consulting/business strategy, the other 10% is corporate legal work (just enough to remind me why I am not a full time attorney).

Pros of my job?
Good money
I work with amazingly bright, motivated, talented and competent people
I learn a lot in a short amount of time
I regularly interview business leaders from across the country
I get to be a data geek with numbers, spreadsheets, and stats
Most weekends are completely my own

Cons of my job?
I work a LOT sometimes (and so does everyone else I work with)--if I am not productive one day, I pay for it on the weekends!
I work with a LOT of people smarter than I am--I never feel like I am good at what I do!
The process of knowing nothing to a lot about an industry in a short amount of time is very painful and stressful (at least for me, without even getting started on what to do with the info!)

I LOVE my job and never thought I would be doing this! That said, my eyes are focused on other things down the road!

Some of you guys have jobs that sound so cool!

I'm in the Air Force. It's been rough lately and I need some inspiration, though. I'm stuck with people I've tried endlessly to motivate to get work done on time, put out a quality product, and be proud of everything they do because their name and reputation is attached to it. I'm not having much success and it's discouraging. Said people are more concerned about getting out of the military and have given up too early. Being surrounded by so much negativity is emotionally and mentally draining. On the other hand, I'm moving in July and I'll be in a new office with new people and a fresh outlook again. I guess that's what I like most about my job--no matter how bad it gets, I'll be moving in a few years.

Currently, Quality Manager for a large Cosmetic company. Basically I make sure our stuff doesn't kill you and looks appealing to the eye when seen on shelves.

What I Like: Very liberal personal leave policy..VERY liberal, 10 minute commute, work exactly 35 hrs per week (not a minute more), more free Perfume/Colognes, Lotions, Creams, etc than I'll ever use in a lifetime.  Comes in handy during Christmas and Birthdays and Bribing  rewarding people.  (Got a Free Tune up at LBS for some well placed Anti-aging creams)

What I don't like: Doesn't play to my strengths (I'm more interpersonal, this job is more technical), rest of manufacturing facility hates me (my position), Dog Crap salary (for NYC/LI area anyway), work 2p-10p, so kids are not in Day Care, but I guess that flexibility is a plus since I am also Mr Mom from 6a-1p to our 2 boys (3 and 4 mos).
