Cultus Lake, British Columbia
Outback Events

Total Time = 1h 58m 53s
Overall Rank = 10/136
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 5/19
Pre-race routine:

Drove out to Cultus Lake in the morning, weather was crappy, raining most of the way, cold and very windy - perfect! :)
Nothing unusual, checked in, got body marked, set up transition, checked out the lake - freezing of course! And sat in the car for a bit to warm up.
Event warmup:

Not much, putting my wetsuit on is a workout in itself!
  • 09m 18s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters

Swim was over pretty quick. Hard to get into a good rhythm with lots of people, wind, chop and freezing cold water - I never wanted to keep my face in!! But looks like I came out a lot better than last year, so overall I'm happy with it!
What would you do differently?:

Not do it again next year! Why am I so dumb?
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s

T1 was pretty good, suit and cap off while running into transition. Shoes on bike already so I just whipped my helmet/glasses on and got my wetsuit off - a bit stuck on the heels - but at least I made the spectators there laugh!
What would you do differently?:

More body glide!!
  • 1h 08m 15s
  • 40 kms
  • 35.16 km/hr

Thought I was doing pretty good on the bike. I had deep carbon wheels on (85mm deep) which during the headwind/crosswind sections made things pretty tough, but the way back with the tailwind it was nice. I was trying to push a bit on the bike to see what I could do, but I'm not great at the shorter events. Kept up okay and had a good time out there, even though my teeth were chattering from being SO COLD!! I was only wearing a wet tri top and shorts - no gloves, socks, or anything else!
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my arm warmers in transition. Work on getting more short course speed.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s

Trying to get running shoes on FAST while your feet are frozen is not fun! I was trying to jam my foot into my shoe and couldn't figure out why it wasn't going in - I had 2 toes OUTSIDE the shoe!!! But my feet were frozen so I couldn't tell!! Oh well, eventually got it together!
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my toes go into my shoe?
  • 38m 25s
  • 10 kms
  • 03m 50s  min/km

I felt pretty good on the run, started out with a quick cadence to get my running legs back again and started immediately making up ground on the next guy up. Never drank or had gels or anything - I knew I didn't have time for that stuff!! What I got on the bike was going to have to do! Basically, not much to say, just kept a good steady pace and felt really strong the whole time!
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot actually, could've pushed more and a little earlier if I had a little more in me.
Post race
Warm down:

light stretching and changed into warm clothes right away.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was a B race so I wasn't fully rested, but the weather played a huge factor in it.

Event comments:

I love the race except for the weather/water. Post race activities will get better as the race grows (this is only the second year).

Suit: Orca Sonar Full Wetsuit
Course: Due to the cold water, they gave an option of not doing the swim or doing a really short swim. I chose to do the swim as I did it last year, so I had to this year as well. Easy one lap course that goes by a big dock on the way back where you can see all the spectators lined up watching. Water was cold and pretty choppy especially since I was always in around a ton of people.

HR wasn't working properly, apparently, after 10 mins my HR was a steady 50-51 bpm?? Wow, I'm good! ;)

Course: Out of Cultus Lake and through Yarrow, make a big square and back through Yarrow along the same road we road out on and back into Cultus Lake. Hilly on the road into/out-of Cultus Lake, otherwise really flat and fast.

Great job out there! It is always fun to get those little toes stuck!

I heard that they were going to move it to September next year. Heres hoping!

Great pics as well, you were smiling!

I'd love to see what you could do with defrosted feet, 4th overall in the run! Awesome, illustrates how cold it was for you toes to have been left behind. Great race!

You're a monster!
Congrats on the time and placing!! You did freakin' well especially in such AMAZINGLY CRAPPY conditions!
I'm super excited for Oliver as well!! I hope the weather is more moderate then it was last year (35 degrees )

Hahaha I'm loving the race notes about the 50-51 HR on the bike and run! That's a pretty good Zone Minus 4 HR
